If you like weirdo, cult, horror, 80s sex comedies, 70s American New Wave, and oddity films and live in Los Angeles ... well then Cinematic Void is for YOU!  Cinematic Void is my monthly (or maybe even more) programming slot over at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. Things kick off on Valentine’s Day Weekend with a special two-night event.  Friday, February 12th X-RAY (aka HOSPITAL MASSACRE) When a woman goes to the hospital for a routine examination, she becomes the prey of a psychotic maniac looking to avenge a childhood Valentine’s Day humiliation. Former Playboy playmate Barbi Benton stars in this absurdly violent slasher epic filled with unethical medical exams, inventive kills, and a hall of fame fire walk into a dummy drop. Saturday, February 13th THE SINFUL DWARF
Harry Novak presents the sleaziest and most depraved Valentine anyone could ask for. Olaf, a demented dwarf, and his mother secretly run a white slave ring in the attic of their boarding house. When a young couple moves in, the dwarf eyes to add the girlfriend to his ever-growing collection of drugged up sex slaves. An outrageous joyride deep into the bizarre world of Danish exploitation cinema, THE SINFUL DWARF goes for broke and doesn’t stop until everything (including your mind) is smashed to pieces. (co-presented by Severin Films)

Fans keep ‘Evil Dead’ franchise alive and bleeding
This article from the Detroit Free Press features interviews from fans that run their own sites dedicated to the Evil Dead franchise with each their own relation with fandom. The article explores how fans of the franchise have lead to Ash vs Evil Dead finally becoming a reality as well as other creations such as the musical. Below is the short interview section chosen to be included for The Deadite Slayer.
“When I first watched (the trailer), I had to watch it a second time just for it to sink in. I just couldn’t believe that an ‘Evil Dead’ show was being done in my lifetime and I would be able to see it in real time as it came out,” says Elise Holmes, founder of The Deadite Slayer site.
The Montreal-based Holmes puts several hours a day into her website alone. She also is interested in “Evil Dead” collectibles and considers a crew jacket from the third film, “Army of Darkness,” a prize possession. She’s made friends in the United Kingdom, Italy and Denmark through her passion for the “Evil Dead” franchise.
“If you like ‘Evil Dead,’ you tend to reaaaally like it,” says Holmes, whose site is one of several Starz has connected with for “Ash vs. Evil Dead” giveaways and contests. “I’m always on eBay looking to see if there’s new stuff to buy. I’m reading every single article that’s out there, every single interview, everything I can get my hands on. I simply cannot go one day without it. It’s really a drug.”

SPECIAL EFFECTS / THE AMBULANCE Discussion between films with writer-director Larry Cohen, moderated by David Del Valle.
SPECIAL EFFECTS 1984, Park Circus/MGM, 106 min, USA, Dir: Larry Cohen Past-his-prime director Chris Neville (a very effective Eric Bogosian) kills an actress at his home while cameras roll; turning the footage into a movie, he casts the woman’s boyfriend in a role in order to frame him for the deed. Zoë Lund (MS. 45) shines in a dual role that looks at Hollywood with both allure and dread.
THE AMBULANCE 1990, Park Circus/MGM, 91 min, USA, Dir: Larry Cohen When a medical crisis strikes and paramedics show up, they’re usually there to help, but this taut (and sometimes hilarious) thriller from writer-director Larry Cohen turns that notion on its head. Comic book artist Eric Roberts is chatting up Janine Turner on the streets of New York when she collapses and is whisked off in an ambulance - but she never makes it to any of the local hospitals. As Roberts tries to unravel the mystery, snappy reporter Red Buttons and cynical cop James Earl Jones help and hinder him, respectively.

Discussion between films with director William Lustig.
MANIAC COP 1988, 85 min, USA, Dir: William Lustig When a series of innocent people are brutally murdered by someone posing as a police officer, rookie cop Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell) finds himself the chief suspect. Lieutenant Frank McCrae (Tom Atkins) isn’t so sure, and before long he stumbles onto what he thinks is a nefarious cover-up involving the maniac cop of the title - a superhuman monster taking on the entire police force and anyone who stands in his way. Scripted by genre movie master Larry Cohen, MANIAC COP is one of the great down-and-dirty action movies of the late ’80s.
MANIAC COP 2 1990, 90 min, USA, Dir: William Lustig Screenwriter Larry Cohen and director William Lustig are back for this sequel, in which the “maniac cop” returns from the dead to continue his mission of vengeance. Robert Z’Dar reprises the title role, with support from Bruce Campbell and Robert Davi - and look out for those cameos from Sam Raimi and Danny Trejo!

Night of the Living '80s: The Changeling and Poltergeist Screening
Friday, July 31st at the Egyptian Theatre
Discussion between films with THE CHANGELING director Peter Medak.
THE CHANGELING 1980, Joel B. Michaels/Garth Drabinsky Productions, 109 min, USA, Dir: Peter Medak Director Peter Medak’s superb ghost story has been recently rediscovered for what it is: one of the most chillingly effective portraits of the supernatural made in the past 30 years. George C. Scott stars as a musician, grieving over the recent deaths of his wife and daughter, who moves into a drafty old mansion - only to find it inhabited by the spirit of a young and very restless ghost.
POLTERGEIST 1982, Warner Bros., 114 min, USA, Dir: Tobe Hooper The Freeling family’s normal life is shattered when malevolent forces kidnap 5-year-old Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke), forcing her desperate parents to seek assistance from a team of academic ghost hunters and a wacky psychic dwarf. With Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Dominique Dunne, Beatrice Straight and Zelda Rubenstein.

Night of the Living '80s: Hellraiser and Pumpkinhead Screening
Sunday, August 2 - 7:30 PM at the Egyptian Theatre
HELLRAISER, 1987, New World Pictures, 94 min. Dir. Clive Barker. In this first film in the HELLRAISER franchise, an antique puzzle box brought from Morocco to London unleashes a race of Cenobites, who love nothing more than inflicting pain on human beings. With his feature directorial debut, Clive Barker joined such filmmakers as Wes Craven and Sam Raimi among the ranks of horror's most reliable auteurs, and lead Cenobite "Pinhead" - his face pierced by dozens of needles - joined the ranks of genre's most recognizable monsters. Starring Andrew Robinson, Clare Higgins and Ashley Laurence.
PUMPKINHEAD, 1988, Park Circus/MGM, 86 min. Effects wizard Stan Winston made his directorial debut with this macabre modern folk tale. Lance Henriksen stars as Ed Harley, a grief-stricken father who asks an old witch in the swamp to bring forth a demon from hell to wreak vengeance on the teen dirt-bike riders who accidentally ran down and killed his tiny son. That vengeance comes at a terrible price, as the link between Ed and the monster grows until the carnage threatens to consume them both.
