amaryedaniels “Exactly! You’d better not try and use me to get you discounts on other things when I’m rich and famous or that might be the end of our friendship,” she said with a grin. To be honest, even after only knowing James for a month, Amarye would take being friends with him over being famous, if she had to choose. “Hmm, okay, fine. We can agree to disagree. Although Hufflepuff is still the best,” she added quickly. “Oh, no, not one of those cars. You might have to get a stunt double to do some stuff, then, if the Focus is going to be that fussy. And you’d have to make sure the baby cars didn’t end up as one of those child stars who went down a dark path.” Amarye shook her head slightly at how ridiculous the two of them were when they started gabbing. “I have excellent taste all round, thank you!”
"You know I'd never do that to you!" James protested. He'd inherited enough money that he didn't really need to, anyway, plus if you were really someone's friend you'd pay them extra to support them. "Ok, but Gryffindor is actually the best and Hufflepuff sucks," he said, with a cheeky grin. "Stunt doubles and baby cars? This is beginning to sound like a very complicated endeavour, you know," he said. "You have almost completely excellent taste," he allowed.
James had been living with Amarye for nearly a month, and it was going well. It was great living with someone with the same interests as him; living with a Magizoologist veterinarian was teaching him a lot, though it hadn’t helped him to decide on a creature or career speciality. He’d been considering working as a Dragonologist, but he didn’t want to commit yet. Instead, he was working with local Magizoologists, meeting their creatures and researching. He was hoping to begin to Floo to other countries to meet new creatures, but so far he wanted to stay local.
It had been a long and exhausting day at work, and he was almost horizontal on the sofa, waiting for death to come and take him away. When he heard the key jangle in the door, he sat up more, not wanting Amarye to see him like a slob. “Hey!” he greeted her, then raised an eyebrow at her statement. Of course, she’d been visiting her parents today. “Well, I’ll let the papers know they’ve got their headline for tomorrow,” he joked, and held an arm out so she could come for a hug. They were at the hugging level of friendship now, which was nice.

"A whole 10% discount? Wow, I must be the luckiest boy alive!" James nudged her. "Excuse me, I have plenty of family members who aren't Gryffindors to balance it out, so you know my correct House opinions are my own." 'Plenty' might be a stretch, but there was Al, Mollie and Louis, so there was one of each. "Well, the Focus had a mind of its own, so I don't know how easy it would be to direct. It might be a bit of a diva, y'know, lots of demands." He snorted; that was definitely the easiest way to deal with Lily. "So you have good taste except for your House opinions, good to know!"

"I've always wanted to have a book by a celebrity dedicated to me, you're literally gonna make my dream come true!" James joked. It would be nice if people could get famous in their field. Newt Scamander was about the most famous magizoologist and that was probably more for being involved in the whole war against Grindelwald. "My House opinions are fully correct, thank you very much." He'd actually always thought if he wasn't a Gryffindor, he'd have like being a Hufflepuff. He definitely wasn't cut out for Ravenclaw or Slytherin. "Yessss, that would be so cute! Aw, I want to make a whole movie about the sentient car now." The car probably wouldn't agree to be in it. Maybe he'd have to enchant another car or two. "Ok, that sounds good to me! Anything with animals is fine by me." He snorted, amused by her willingness to declare Lily wrong. "Ok, just never say that to her face, she will argue with you until you are sure you're wrong. She's won every single argument anyone has ever had with her." It was barely an exaggeration. Even their parents rarely bothered. "I have the best taste! Should we order a large Hawaiian and wedges then?"

"Ooh, I've always wanted to be someone's superhero origin story! I'll definitely get a shout-out in your autobiography then, right?" It would be a nice thought if he wasn't already somewhat famous and if he actually wanted to be famous, but it was ok to joke about. The idea of being famous, being stalked by newspapers and chased for interviews, everyone watching you? James thought that sounded like hell. It wasn't as bad in the wizarding world as the Muggle world, though - he'd heard about what the Muggles did to their celebrities and was suitably horrified. Vicki was a little bit obsessed with some of them, even if she liked to pretend she was just hate-obsessed. "I'm a boy, we're all dumb," he said, with a sheepish grin. "Erm, Gryffindor is definitely the best House!" he defended instantly. He'd never had as much House pride as some of the other students, except when it came to Quidditch. "Maybe they'll have little sentient car babies!" Obviously that wasn't how biology worked but it was a cute idea. "That's just going to send you mad, that is. C'mon, take a break. We could watch a movie! I'll probably fall asleep halfway through. You can pick, though!" At least she wouldn't pick a romcom. "I am absolutely for pineapple on pizza. Lily thinks it's an abomination but I love it!"

"Let's go with that, that sounds good to me," James agreed, amused by how long they'd been talking about this for now. It was nice to have someone to talk shit with, rather than just chatting at Lola while she blinked at him and tried to steal his glasses. "Oh, I was feeling special for a second there," he said, putting on a sad face. "I just care a lot about them, y'know? Plus, I'm dumb for loads more reasons," he joked, then his eyes widened slightly, startled. Had she just called him adorable? He probably shouldn't make a big deal of it. She probably meant adorable like a puppy. "Yep, Lola is definitely more adorable than me, aren't you girl?" he cooed the last part at Lola. "It was probably running on magic. Students used to say it was still in the Forbidden Forest, but I don't think anyone's seen it since my dad's second year." He quite liked the idea that it was still living wild. "I know what you mean, like it's scary to think that relationships just run their course sometimes. I guess people change and they just changed in different directions." It happened all the time to younger people, it was just weird when it was someone's parents. He guessed you just assumed that if two people had kids together they were really serious. "Oooh, pizza! Can we have wedges? I need me some wedges."

“Ah, good point, much better! Fewer syllables makes it catchier, good shout.” She beamed at him, enjoying their bantering. “You’d better be my number one fan, I rescued you from a house of mould and gave Lola a better chance at life.” She dreaded to think what might have happened to the poor Niffler if James had been a neglectful owner and not taken her in to see Amarye - there were so many owners who wouldn’t have been as attentive to Lola’s problems as James had been, and it made her heart warm that James cared so much about animals. “I’ll make time for you, even if it’s only as a way to actually spend time with Lola.” She laughed and scratched the Niffler, who was sleeping on the arm of the sofa, under the chin. “Hm, are you saying I couldn’t handle myself against some acromantula?” She paused. “Because if you are saying that, you’re definitely right. I would die, but then my legacy could be to have captured these amazing images which no-one had before.” To be fair, that did sound like a cool legacy in the magical creatures world. She nodded in agreement with James. “Yeah, I’m a big girl, I can handle the truth, you know? Although I don’t think there was anything completely huge, like cheating or anything. Which kind of scares me even more, because if their relationship fell apart without too much trouble, that means any relationship can seem really strong and just break at a moment’s notice.” Amarye had been spending a lot of time, unable to sleep, considering this, which was partly what had caused her to swear off dating. Not that she’d told her parents this - her mum would probably say that she was being silly, while her dad would likely start crying and agreeing that relationships were terrible.
"You know the newspapers will only use the catchiest nickname!" James agreed, grinning back. Seeing Amarye after a long, hard day was good for revitalising him, really. "You did, I hope the newspapers mention that. Girl Who is Always Right and Saviour of Animals and Dumb Boys." His landlord still hadn't fixed the mould problem, and at this point he'd moved half his stuff in here and was debating just staying here. It seemed silly to uproot Lola and Kiki again, too - they'd settled in so nicely. And he would really miss Amarye. He just hoped he wasn't going to outstay his welcome. He did his best to help with the chores and to be tidy, and to give Amarye some space when he could. He thought he was a pretty good housemate. "Oh, I get it, you're just using me to get to Lola." He pouted. "Yeah, I don't think many people could take Acromantula. My dad only could because he had a sentient car. It's probably still in the woods at Hogwarts, to be fair, maybe you could get it on-side." It was an amusing idea, Amarye and a car facing off against the giant spiders. "If it was something like that they'd probably be angrier. I guess relationships don't always have to last forever to be meaningful, like it's ok for friendships to drift apart but they were still special at the time, so it's weird we - like as a society - don't seem to apply that to romantic relationships." Now he was getting a little too deep for a Friday night. "Not to change the subject and we can definitely keep talking about this, but, do you want takeaway for dinner? I am starving."

"The Girl Who was Always Right, maybe? That's less syllables." Her sense of humour made him laugh; she wasn't that big-headed at all, which would make it funny to introduce her to Vicki. He probably should, really. He'd already invited Louis and Teddy over, though, and that was a recipe for disaster. He really didn't get how someone could hate their sibling so much. No matter what Lily and Al did, he couldn't imagine spending all his time insulting them - he didn't know any French but he could tell by the tone that she wasn't complimenting Louis - and glaring at them like they'd just murdered his cat. There was no chance he'd go asking Vicki about it, for fear of being on the receiving end of her fury. He'd asked Louis once, who'd pretended not to know what he meant. He'd asked Lily, who'd huffed and said something very unladylike and unrepeatable about Vicki. After that, he'd figured it best to leave the subject alone. "Well, I'll be your number one fan, so you'd better have time for me!" Was that a bit much for having known each other a month? He'd just go with it. "I don't think you'd live to tell the tale, but at least there'd be pictures of them, that'd be cool." He screwed up his nose; from what he'd heard, it didn't exactly sound amicable and mutual. "It sucks that they're keeping stuff from you. I mean, you're not a kid anymore, and they're not being great role models if they're not being honest. It must be hard for them, though," he added hastily, not wanting her to take offense.

"Yep, you'll be the Girl who Warned Everyone About Love. Okay, that's not that catchy, we'll workshop it," he said, though he supposed anything would sound a bit rubbish compared to 'The Boy Who Lived'. Really, it was a good thing he'd never wanted to be famous: he wouldn't measure up to his dad, and he'd have got a complex trying. "I know!" He made a mental note to see if he could ask if she could come along; he didn't like to ask for favours, knowing that people were all too willing to grant them to Harry Potter's son and he hated taking advantage of that, but he'd make an exception for Amarye. "I mean, I would too, but I'd take a minute to marvel at how cool they are and maybe take a picture or something. Dad just reckons they're disgusting." He tended to sympathise with Hagrid in his dad's telling of his time at Hogwarts. "I'm glad your mum's okay. I'm sure your dad will be, given time. Have either of them told you what happened, or...?" It was hard for him to imagine being in her position: his parents clearly adored each other, and they'd been through so much together that even if they did get divorced, he couldn't imagine they'd be at each other's throats. It was clearly taking its toll on Amarye too, even though she wasn't a child anymore. Declaring that she was never dating again seemed like a pretty big jump, but she was dealing the best way she knew, and he wasn't about to get at her for it.

James felt a slight pang as she moved away, and guessed he must be a little touch starved. He’d grown up with a tactile family, and he and Kennedy had always been cuddle buddies. It’d been a few days since he’d seen anyone other than Amarye outside of work; he’d have to rectify that, when he was less tired. Since they lived so close to Kennedy, he saw her quite often, and had introduced her to Amarye. They seemed to get on well, which was nice. The real test would be introducing Amarye to Lily: the latter was a great judge of character and rarely thought anyone was good enough for their family. Not that Amarye was going to be part of their family. “I’m sure there’ll be an emergency broadcast once they catch wind of it, and then you’ll be heralded as the hero for warning everyone,” he said solemnly. “Exhausting. It was interesting though. I get to meet a phoenix next week, that’ll be cool! My dad is always going on about Fawkes,” he added, with an eyeroll. “He’s met so many amazing creatures, and he spent half his time running away from them!” He shook his head. “How are your parents?”
