jetlag sucks

unfortunately 28+ hours of travel (with maybe one hour of sleep) can't trump a 7-hour time difference. =(

slept at 11:30pm, woke up at 3:30am actually feeling rested and wide awake. it's nearly 7am now and after trying (unsuccessfully) to fall asleep for over two hours, decided to just start getting some work done.

Fun with interns?

Setting: Regional Referral Hospital in Soroti, Uganda. Taking a break in the intern's room with some tea and bread, a female intern comes in after finishing rounds with an HIV patient:

Intern: So James, do you have a girlfriend in Africa yet?

Me: Uhh what...I've only been here like 5 days...

Intern: Oh but these girls, they move so fast!

Me: (nervous laughter) haha um no I do not have a girlfriend here

Intern: (quite seriously) OK good, don't get AIDS here.

Me: (O_O) I...don't plan...on getting AIDS in Africa...

Other Male Intern: Oh then where do you plan on getting AIDS?

(the others burst into laughter)

Me: Errr I plan on getting AIDS never (._.)

No but really, HIV/AIDS is a big problem here, along with TB, malaria, and just infectious diseases overall which US pretty much doesn't worry about. I've been shadowing in the surgical and medical wards the last few days- diabetes clinic is on Thursdays when I can do the real work I came here for- and it's been 7ish hours of being on my feet, doing rounds with doctors and interns, and learning about the problems people in Uganda face. Pics to come soon!

Oh and they don't do lunch- just a small break in the afternoon for tea and bread x_x I may actually lose some weight while here...

I'm coming home

I'm coming home, tell the world i'm coming home. Med school year one was exciting, difficult, eye-opening, meticulous, tiring, fun, and inspiring (plus many other adjectives I can't think of bc it's 5AM). I really enjoyed it and there's probably very little I would change if I could do it all over again. But man, i'm glad to just be coming home, even if only for ten days.

so apparently my tumblr is 4 years old today

I tried to think back to why/when I originally made this blog, and it was right before my summer trip to Ecuador and Peru, to document what I was doing. a way to journal, a way to remember, and also share with others. 

Now I just write random little things that are going on, use it as a way to update ppl, and just reblog whatever seems fun or interesting to me.

I just got my shots today- Typhoid, Meningitis, and Polio booster (already had Yellow Fever and Hep A), for my trip to Uganda. The nurse made my arm bleed and felt bad since it bled onto my shirt, so she wiped it with hydrogen peroxide before I left =)

Oh yea, I'm goin to Africa this summer!

There's really no point to this post, I just felt like writing on here because I got emailed saying my tumblr turned 4 today.
