The Science behind performing Shraadham | Janani Astrology
When one sheds the form, the jiva still carries its Karma in its spiritual journey.
These Karmas have to be accomplished to finally reach a state of moksha which is a zero karma state.
It is essential for this jiva to move forward to accomplish this task in a peaceful way.
The pain of physical separation is inevitable, more when you have lived with the person for many years.  The suffering can only vanish when all the jivas wish to get into a zero karma stage. Any attachment can only bring suffering.  Hence it is logical for us to let go of the departed jiva to find its peace and to get rid of the karmic suffering.
Shraadham is to be performed with this single intention in mind. Janani Astrology
The Shraadham has to be performed not to remember the jiva but to help the jiva to move on.  The ultimate objective is for the person doing the Shraadham is to let go of the jiva. The immediate Putra who is called the Jyeshta putra is entitled to perform the karma because his main duty or the main purpose of birth is to perform the Pitru karma.  Remember the rest of the putras are a resultant of Kaama and hence termed as Kaama Putras.
Just like how the body has multiple parts and all the parts are connected, so is the universe.  The universe is one single molecule binding all of us.  The family of the departed grieves after the kith or kin passes away.  So it is the jiva which goes through pain. It feels like coming back and looks for a body to start getting back into this plane. Which is why it is advised that we burn the body than burying.
It is clearly stated in Garuda Puranam that the body is made up of Pancha Tatwa comprising of Prithvi, Agni, Jala, Akasaha and Vayu tatwa. This form is the Sthoola form which is visible. There is another form of the body which is the Sookshma Sharira made up of Man, Buddhi, Ahankar. Within that one more form exists which is the third form comprising of Sath, Chith, Ananda – Aatma form.
After the Sthoola Sharir is cremated, the  Sookshma Sharirira travels and takes another form in a new body. At that point of time the Jiva says I want to live with my family.  The atma remains for a period of  10 days looking for food in the same house where it lived.  This is why food is prepared and offered.
The human souls use the Crows as a ‘vehicle’ to have a ‘peep’ into this material world. It may be your ancestors is actually ‘looking’ at you in this same material world through the eyes of the crow whom he is using as a vehicle of manifestation. However, this phenomenon is only of very temporary nature. That is why crows are referred to as your ancestors and there is a practice of offering food to crows.
The concept of having kids – Jyeshta putra – Is only due to the fear that if the form is not burnt it will be unable to proceed further in the spiritual journey and will only be attached to the bodies around.  However, in our Vedic scriptures there are clear indications of how the jiva can still traverse in a spiritual journey by performing Shradha in advance!  This holds good for people without kids and Sanyasis as well. They can do their own atmapindam, their own Shradham.  So deep and complete are the shastras that they take care of all contingencies!
The answer is extremely simple. Our thoughts have great powers.  Every thought produces action and every action produces a result.  Hence the result of the karma will certainly help the particular jiva wherever the jiva may be. People belonging to other cultures may not perform these rituals, but they do,  in some way, remember their loved ones to let go forever and be in Sat, Chit, Ananda State!
Hence it is also essential that we do not cry when our kitch & kin shed their form as they attain a higher spiritual form which has no pain.
