Jan Helen Denver: Become a Skiing Pro with These Tips
Jan Helen Denver is a former Vail skiing instructor. Having been part of the Norwegian ski team in his 20s, he knows that enjoying the sport is more than just strapping on skis and heading to the slopes. In fact, if you’ve been looking forward to a skiing vacation, the hard part might have been getting the time off. Now, it’s time to enjoy the most of the time by following expert instruction.
Get the Right Equipment:
Don’t leave home with your nephew’s ski equipment and think you’ll be okay. A new set of skis is going to be more responsive than an older set. The same goes for ski boots, which you can wear a few days before the trip to make sure they fit well. Newer, lighter equipment makes for a better experience.
Work on fitness:
If you’re able to get started on a fitness program before the trip, you’ll be better off for it. Consider a one-month fitness program that focuses on your core and leg muscles. That way, you will be able to tackle the slopes with ease.
Have a skiing plan
Many people spend a lot of time thinking about where to eat dinner every night than planning their days on the slopes. Outline what you hope to achieve by the end of the trip so that you work up to it safely.
Go Easy
A lot of people go on ski trips with a lot of energy and end up overdoing it the first day. Take it easy, so that you can slowly get acclimated with the snow, skis and the boots. As Jan Helen Denver knows, challenging yourself with the advanced stuff can shorten your trip.

Jan Helen Denver: Skiing Tips for Beginners
Early in his career, Jan Helen Denver was a professional skier. He was part of the Norwegian ski team in his youth, and a ski instructor in Vail, Colorado. At certain points in his skiing career, he was able to race with and against some of the legends of the sport, including Phil Mahre, Jean-Claude Killy, Stein Eriksen, and Jimmie Heuga, among others.
Tumblr media
Learning to become a good skier takes a lot of practice and patience. There isn’t much theory here, and the best way is to get out on a slope and actually do it. But if you want to get good at it, there are some things to keep in mind.
Clothing You will need the right skiing attire. Nothing ruins a ski run like being uncomfortable. You can always rent the outer clothing – jacket and waterproof trousers – but it’s what is underneath that you need to pay attention to. Your arms and legs need to be covered up, so gloves are required. Layered dressing, as opposed to heavy clothing, traps heat and keeps you warm. Also, invest in some good ski socks and ski boots.
Equipment An investment in the right ski boots, poles and skis is required, but ensure they are matched to your height and weight. Even your skill level has to be considered if you are going to get the right equipment.
Instructor advice Skiing is one of those activities you can’t pick up without expert help. As Jan Helen knows, it’s important to heed the advice of your instructor. An experienced instructor can be the difference between you loving it, or declaring never to put on skis in your life.

Jan Helen Denver: How to Navigate Through Tough Times
Jan Helen is an accomplished investment banking professional who has practiced in Denver, Colorado, for more than 30 years. During his career, he has seen volatile economic times come and go, and it's during such times that many investors panic and disregard their long-term investment goals, sometimes adversely affecting their investment portfolios. As many financial advisors know, however, it’s wise to sometimes stay the course during volatile times.
Here's how you do it.
Ignore the hype
This is easier said than done. However, the more you can tune out the hype, the less likely you’ll be tempted to make major investment decisions based on speculation or environmental factors. Long-term financial prosperity is achievable when decisions are made out of solid facts and research.
Avoid timing the market
Selling your stocks before an expected downturn, for example, might seem like a good idea to avoid taking losses. However, if it turns out the rocky patch is short term, it can be tough to get back in the stocks game and take advantage of better times.
Come up with a plan
A plan that outlines your short- and long-term goals is an important aspect for any serious investor. Having a plan puts you in a better position to navigate around tough economic times. Even though there’s never a bad time to put together an investment plan, it would be better if you have one now.
Tough times are inevitable in the financial market. As professionals like Jan Helen Denver know, it’s the prepared investors who are able to weather the storm and still hit their investment targets.
