the problem with hazbin hotel, and it seems to be an "adult" indie cartoon trend at large, is that it was created by individuals whose primary experience with media creation and analysis is that of children's shows.

from what I've seen, the first industry trend was young adults who grew up with teen titans and ATLA and sought to mimic them without understanding why they worked; grand stakes, adventure, and grimdark topics being only the icing on the cake. you saw cartoons like steven universe, star vs the forces of evil, my little pony, and even adventure time to an extent mimicking this formula.

it's appealing on the face of it, so they got popular. then criticism arose which picked apart the ethics of the content being addressed, as more and more grimdark and high stake content was introduced--often political in nature--more nuanced or complicated than a children's show syndicated on a "family friendly" network could reasonably address.

but now the people who grew up with that criticism, people like me, are young adults starting their careers and have been informed by these criticisms on how to approach writing content for ages 10-13.

so enter hazbin hotel, a show about rape, coercive sexual exploitation, sex work, drug and alcohol abuse, class genocide, and extreme cases of abuse and murder.

however the content is treated with the same hand-holding moralizing kid gloves you'd expect to see in a show for 10 year olds while touching on supremely, insurmountably dark and complicated topics.

my point is my jaw dropped when the takeaway from a character worsening an abusive slave/pimp exploitative relationship via personal involvement was "today I learned about having boundaries!"

"a music festival was attacked on october 7th" HELLO??? no mention of the ongoing genocide of Palestinians??? no mention about the apartheid system that's been in occupied Palestine "israel" for DECADES????? that was absolute trash what the fuck
