Use when you say that a person’s mental/physical condition is very “~” or that a person is so “~” that they can’t resist doing something.

Describe something usually found in something is not there. Or when a person usually found somewhere is not there.

N+ぬきで

キャプテンがけがをしたので、来週の試合キャプテンぬきで戦わなければならなくなってしまった。

Since the captain got hurt, we have to play next week’s game without him.

子供ようにわさびぬきでお寿司を作ってもらった。

Like a kid, I had sushi made without the wasabi.

*Having food made without something is very a common usage

Ie you want to order a burger w/o lettuce say レタスぬきでお願いします。

Like Thingほどsomethingない (almost saying there is nothing as --- as thing)

Vる（こと）、N＋ほど...はない

先輩ほど優しい人はいないと思う。

I think senpai is the nicest person. or I think there’s nobody nicer than senpai.

Use when you’re absolutely sure about something

If you just one thing (ie 「thing」とか） it’s like saying “such as/like 「thing」”

I like watching sports and I go to watch a lot of sports like baseball.

かと思った

Use when your initial impression was wrong or you misunderstand something. Like ‘日本人かと思ったら、留学生だった’ I though they were Japanese, but they’re actually a study abroad student.

１００点取って、先生に呼ばれたから、褒められるかと思ったら、遅刻が多いと注意された。

Since I got a 100, I thought the teacher was calling me over to praise me, but they just warned me about getting too many tardies.

Because it’s this [person,company..], ....

Like based on this person’s personality, they will probably do this

N＋のことだから

ジョーイのことだから、また彼女に電話かけるはずない。

Since it’s Joey, there’s no way he’s gonna call her again.

小山さんのことだから、きっとまた遅刻ですよ。先に行きましょう。

Since it’s Koyama, he’s definitely going to be late again. Let’s just go without him.

せい

Can be used just like から, but it is negative and is putting blame on something. Saying “「person」のせい” is saying it’s that person’s fault for something.

Pl「なAな、Nの」+ せい

せいで is deliberate (because of this ...)

せいか is unsure (maybe it’s because of this...)

部屋のエアコンが古いせいで、音がうるさくて寝られない。

Because my air conditioner is so old it’s really loud and I can’t sleep.

ごめん。僕のせいで君にまで迷惑かけちゃって。

Sorry, I’ve been making so much trouble for you.

気のせいか、駅前のパン屋のパンが小さくなったような気がする。

It might just be me, but I feel like the bread from the store in front of the station got smaller.

I think because she took the day off, Tanaka is feeling down today.

っぽい

Making a noun an adjective. Like Child - childish. Girl - girly....

Also used when you have an impression that something seems a certain way.

N＋っぽい

いつも黒っぽい服を着ているね。明るい色は嫌いなの？

You’re always wearing black(ish) clothes huh. Do you not like bright colors?

A.具合悪そうだけど大丈夫？

B.実は朝から、熱っぽいんです。

A. You don’t seem too good, are you alright?

B. Actually from this morning, it seems like I have a headache.

Common usages:

子供っぽい、女っぽい、大人っぽい、油っぽい

くせに

“even though --”, but has a negative tone. If you want to sound neutral, you use のに。

Pl （なAな、Nの）+ くせに

「今すぐ行きます」って言ったくせに、一時間たっても来ない。

Even though she said “I’m coming now”, it’s been an hour and she’s still not here.

木村さんは文句ばかり言う。そのくせに何もしない。

Kimura just complains all the time. And yet they don’t do anything about it.

〜ことといったら

When you want to strongly express a feeling such as surprise, being impressed, or anger

like “so --- that...” (so beautiful that i cried, so rude that i left...) 

いA、なAな、Nさ（美しさ・すばらしさ・とか）＋ことといったら

花見の客の多いことといったら、ゆっくり桜も見られないほどでした。

あの店の店員の態度のひどいことと言ったら...。もう二度と行きたくない。

冬の富士山は美しいことといったら、泣くほどです。

わけがない・はずがない

そんなことは絶対考えられないと、強く否定したいときに使う。

~is absolutely not true (strongly deny something)

相手は世界でトップのチームだし、頑張ったって、勝てるわけがない。

あの二人は恋人のわけがない。

中間試験季節だから、ひまなわけがない。

あの人が断るはずがないよ。

とは限らない

When you want to say the general impression may not always imply. “~ is not always true”

最近、バレンタインデーに贈るものはチョコレートとは限らないそうです。

社長の意見が必ずしも正しいとは限らない。

~からといって

“just because ---, doesn’t mean....” Often used when criticizing, giving advice or warning.

Pl + からといって

試験が終わったからといって、遊びすぎないでください。

熱が下がったからといって、無理をしてはいけませんよ。

~っこない

「〜っこない」は「〜わけがない」と同じように、そんなことは絶対考えられないと、強く否定したいときに使う。

like “no way in hell can ---”

いくらお寿司が好きでも、５０皿も一度に食べられっこないよ。
