Omg we had the same concept in our student dorms!! It was really nice.
There was a fridge next to the pantry shelves where you could put leftovers from your meals so someone else could pick it up for breakfast, lunch, dinner or as a snack. There was partially unused pantry stuff too. Nothing was going to waste.
When I was baking cookies for Christmas in my first year at the dorm, I made too many and decided to put a few bags of the cookies into the shared pantry shelf, with a list of contents and allergens attached. They were gone after a day, so I really hoped they tasted well for the person who took them.
