The Mandarin and the Butterfly - Fundimentals Story
I’ve now included my patterns to my silhouettes! I think some work and some need working on, I think the brick wall is out of place because most of the backgrounds are light blue, so it looks out of place! I might have a go at doing blue brick walls and see what happens!

The Mandarin and the Butterfly - Fundimentals Story
Here are my developed patterns. I really like the floral one although its extremely bright on the computer screen. Ive put it in order on which ones my favourite, top to bottom.

The Mandarin and the Butterfly - Fundimentals Story
I’ve developed my patterns by adding watercolour paint. I chose watercolour because I thought that the black card was very hard and in your face, I needed something light and came to compliment it. I tried to choose colours in which I think would represent best e.g. garden: green, floral colours.

The Mandarin and the Butterfly - Fundimentals Story
Here are some of the patterns I’ve designed. I wanted to create patterns that allowed me to use them for different areas within my book such as the sea, the walls and the floor.

The Mandarin and the Butterfly - Fundimentals Story
My tutor and i discussed that we think my story is based in 1920, so i wanted to look for patterns in that era. I looked at two books “Army and Navy - London S.W.” and “Studios in Design - Chr. Dresser”. They both had amazing patterns which inspired me to do some of my own.

The Mandarin and the Butterfly - Fundimentals Story
I decided that I wanted to do something similar to silhouettes because thats how stories in Asia were traditionally shown, through shadows. I decided to use black card and cut away what I didn’t need. So far I think it looks effective and can use some of the scenes more than once. The next step is adding backgrounds which i’m considering using patterns or wallpaper. I want to do my characters in a separate colour of card and the same with any props.

The Mandarin and the Butterfly - Fundimentals Story
I have been given a story called the Mandarin and the butterfly and have been asked to illustrate images to narrate the story. Ive broken the story down by starting off with a story board. I then used grid paper to compact it down to 15 slides (equivalent to 32 pages). My illustrations are very basic because I haven’t decided yet what type of medium to use.

Online Portfolio Development - Pro Con 2
Although it’s incomplete, here’s a short video of navigating around my website. It may look basic but there were so many things that frustrated me that shouldn’t have but I manage to overcome the problem. For example, I found out how to change the opacity of images when hovered over them, i also found out how to create new pages without having to go to a different tab, I learnt how to add more than one image to a page without everything messing up on the page.

Online Portfolio Development - Pro Con 2 Here you can see some of the coding i’ve used for my website. It’s clear that i’ve kept to the design of my wireframe. I kept to a house style yellow, black and white, since they are the colours in my logo. I’ve used a type face called Cedarville Cursive for my name because it’s similar to my own handwriting. I still have a lot to go through yet, but so far i’m happy with the way my website is coming together.

Online Portfolio Development - Pro Con 2 Kat wanted to see a wire frame so we could have the go ahead for building our own website. The top image was my original layout but then I developed it on Illustrator so that it was clearer but also for professional purposes. If I was to design a website for a client, it would help that they can see a clear understanding of the structure of their website.

Kat showed us the basics on how to create a website. I decided to take screenshots as I went along for my own basics for when it came to designing my own website. It was actually very helpful and benefited me alot!

Final Logo - Pro Con 2
Here is my final logo design. I went for an artistic brush which represented me as a creative individual. I liked how some of the flower was uncompleted as if it was my own pen running out. I decided to go for thick yellow brush marks just to emphasise that its drawn and not realistic.

Logo Development - Pro Con 2
After selecting my favourite logo, I decided to develop it by looking at different line weights and different brushes. I also tried different colours but found that Yellow was best since most Jasmine flowers are yellow, its also one of my favourite colours and I think it’s very inviting.

Logo Development - Pro Con 2
I started off with just using my initials and putting them in different shapes. At first I was trying to make it very slick and very clean but I thought that didn’t really represent me as an illustrator. I then moved on and looked into Thai typography since I am half Thai. I tried to connect my initials together, hoping that something else would look better however I thought this looked to square and not very memorable as a logo.  In the second image, was my original logo that I used to use, combining the J and the T together to create an anchor shape. I thought this looked effective and memorable but yet again didn’t represent me.  In this last photo, I tried to create my initials out of images that related best to me. Elephants are my favourite animals and I thought the J looked sweet as a trunk of an elephant, but close up the J could be misplaced for an F.  I decided to take away the T and just work on the J, looking at Jasmine flowers since my name is Jasmine. That’s when I decided it fitted and represented me perfectly.

Heres my final illustration for my selected poem:
“Cause and Effect” Charles Bukowski
The best often die by their own hand just to get away, and those left behind can never quite understand why anybody would ever want to get away from them

Collagraph/Intaglio Printing. This is my favourite type of print, this isn't for any particular project, I just needed to do something I enjoy to motivate me through my briefs. I really enjoy drawing portraits and I really enjoy print so I wanted to combine the two, it's supposed to be robin williams but it's hard to say with all the texture. You can see that I didn't wipe enough ink off, but after a few more presses, the ink faded.

Stencil Screen Print. We had 3 stations, cyan, yellow and magenta, on each station we were asked to select 2 shapes so they could be printed, then change the shapes when we got to the next station. After we completed these prints we we're asked to think about how we would later them if we were to do this again. #stencil#screenprint#graphicdesign#illustrations#universityofsalford
