why don't you like valgrace?

i like valgrace fine, i just don't really like making content for it or how a majority of the fandom interprets their relationship.

like first of, there's the piper erasure, or villainization to 'make valgrace work'. I do not think that leo would ever date his best friend's ex. This is a boy who has so few friends because he keeps everyone behind walls he puts up, and i cannot see leo looking at his best friend who just broke up with her boyfriend after months of internal torment and him going 'yeah. ill tap that.' He wouldn't. I refuse to accept it. he cares far too much about his friendships to ever do that.

and then you have the way that most valgracers fundamentally choose to mischaracterize leo especially in order to make valgrace work. leo didn't name the argo 2 after jason, he named it after the argo 1. leo has consistently had to save and bail himself out of most of the shit he gets thrown into-- and also has had to bail others out of same situations. leo sees a problem, thinks up a solution, and then rolls up his sleeves to get to work enacting that solution because life has taught him that there ain't nobody around to help him because he's not worth helping. while a terrible mindset, it is his lived experience and he doesn't need jason to be his knight in shining armor because half the time, it's leo doing the saving.

i just feel like so many fans don't acknowledge leo's hyper independence because leo himself downplays it so much. leo should be treated more like percy imo, where in his own pov he's just a silly little guy who's sad, yet when it's turned to other pov's they're mistaking him for a mini god. he's capable, he says several times he practically built the argo 2 solo, he's the one who came up with the plan to kill gaea all by himself mind you and went through with it successfully i might add.

last thing im really going to say on this is that jason also wouldn't pursue leo. jason admires leo 100%. his povs drip with praise. but jason also had unrequited love with reyna because he was loyal to the Legion first. disregarding anything i said above, fundamentally valgrace would never happen because leo's self esteem is too low to consider jason an option and because jason's loyalty to Rome and Her principles will forever overshadow the possibility of him ever putting all of his energy into loving someone.

again. im not gonna bash valgrace fans, and i follow a good handful of blogs who have that as their otp. but im honestly too much a leo and piper fan to see the full appeal of valgrace unless it was an au where jason and leo met post jiper breakup or an au where jiper never happened etc etc.

Rereading BoO and it’s actually fascinating to me that out of all the things Gaia could target when it comes to Jason’s insecurities, she chooses the fact that he’s not good enough. Jason is painted as this image of the perfect hero, and he’s become everything everyone always believed he would be—Jason Grace, son of Jupiter, champion of Juno, praetor of the Twelfth Legion, slayer of the Trojan sea monster, defeater of Krios, hero of Olympus. And he is not enough.

I've started really not liking the "Hera's memories = jiper comphet" because people's insistence of it, despite the canon saying otherwise, feels more and more like Bi/pan erasure. There, I said it.

My Heroes of Olympus character ranking;

You would think that because I have a Jason themed acc that he would be my fave, but he is decidedly *not*. Found this in my phone notes today and thought it was funny lol;

That being said, I think my ranking of them changes literally every single time I reread the series, and there are never any characters I just straight up *hate,* more like some I connect w/ less.

I think the current ranking based on my last re-read would actually be;

1. Hazel

2. Reyna

3. Leo

4. Frank

5. Jason

6. Nico

7. Annabeth

8. Percy

9. Piper (I'm not a Piper hater stg, I just always have such a hard time connecting to her pov 😭 which Is funny because when I first read the series, at like 11, she was def my 2nd fave right after Leo).

Anyways. All this to say, I think Jason is just particularly interesting because he was, I believe, so underdeveloped comparatively. It gives a lot of room for fun interpretations and such.

My favorite part about Heroes of Olympus is all the different characters we got to meet and read about.

I read the first five PJO books first too, but I definitely wasn't partial to Percy compared to the new characters. By the end, I certainly cared about him equally or even not as much compared to our new characters.

I never really understood people who found it weird being introduced to new characters in HOO. I didn't give a shit when Jason, Leo and Piper showed up

Like, I don't mean to be rude, but I don't see the point of why Rick would write 5 more books entirely centered around the original trio. I'm actually glad he explored with the new characters

I will admit that, even though I have read canon multiple times, I have definitely made this misinterpretation, lol.

I believe this is because it just makes more sense on the surface that Jason wouldn't know much about the outside world.

In the PJOTV series, Rick made the executive creative decision to say that Annabeth had never even seen a movie at 12 years old, so why would Jason have left to do so at a camp with way more amenities and stricter measures? I mean once you're in Camp Jupiter, you're in the legion and they literally brand you. The only reasons we saw characters leave in series were for quests which camp Jupiter had to conduct entire Senate meetings over. Why would they let people essentially abandon posts to go do something as frivolous as watch a movie?

But the answer to these questions is in an absolute throw away line in one of Hazel's chapters in Son of Neptune;

Camp Jupiter has furlough. So Camp Jupiter does, in fact, have allotted times that legionaries can leave the camp. It's just mentioned and shown to happen so minimally, that I think a lot of people either forgot or just didn't catch this minute detail.

I was going to go through The Heroes of Olympus series and make lists of things that constantly get misremembered (Piper never wearing crop tops/ her clothing in general, Leo’s appearance, etc) and I started with The Lost Hero and Jason’s knowledge of pop culture, which is normal, like he wasn’t isolated at Camp Jupiter at all, but y’all.

I’m still gonna go through and see what else is there, but if the whole book is as full as the first few pages, why is the popular interpretation to believe he knows nothing about the outside world?
