This year I’m making a change—I’m done with the news-cycle doom scroll.
A few days ago, I felt a heavy burden in my spirit, and the Lord revealed to me why: I was spending too much time on headlines designed to keep us anxious and angry, often leading to toxic social media posts. As a result, my mind became clouded with negativity and sorrow, harming my spiritual life and creating a ripple effect of other issues.
Social media sites deliberately expose us to content that provokes anger and emotional investment because their algorithms reward engagement. The easiest way to boost engagement is by sowing discord through hate and division. Twitter is particularly bad in this regard, and no one who wants a healthy mind should spend time on that site.
Scripture tells us that our eyes are the lamp of the body. If we constantly expose ourselves to harmful content, darkness takes root, making us more vulnerable to depression, anxiety, and pessimism. That’s why I’m choosing to be intentional about what I allow my eyes to see. In my world, I choose optimism, opportunity, and abundance.
Matthew 6:22-23 "Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!"
Philippians 4:8 "And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise."
