Did you know it snows in California? I flew in from Atlanta to the Reno, Nevada airport , drove to Truckee and bam, a snow storm. This minute it was fine and then another it was a full on snow storm. It’s not a winter or December picture by the way. I was absolutely not prepared for this weather. I didn’t even bring a winter coat. I had to borrow one. It’s been a while but I’ve been learning and sharing my knowledge as I travel. Eating out can be pricey sometimes. Do you always cook, eat out or a combination of both? For me, If I’m doing a short trip like 3 - 4 days, I’ll probably just eat out and maybe purchase some quick breakfast items from the grocery store. Anything longer and I will probably cook. But! That’s only if you choose an accommodation that comes with a kitchen. If it doesn’t, you will have to eat out all the way out. That is something to consider when you’re booking accommodations. I always get paranoid when people ask me to show my passport. I keep a very close eye on it and always ensure they give it back. It’s easy to forget it. It is as simple as giving your passport to the immigration officer in the airport and you walk off without it or even forgetting it when checking in a hotel. Between the period of them asking you questions, scanning or photocopying your passport; It is easy to forget it or for them to remember to give it back to you. I asked the security officer at the entrance of the CNN building to take my picture with my phone. This is the one thing I keep forgetting to do. Check out all the food places near your accommodation before you visit. I have been on a man hunt for food places that I like, since I got here. You might find one place but it’s not as good as you thought so you have to search for some place else. The ones you do like might be too far away. If you have dietary restrictions like me or you’re vegan, I wish you luck. I have always been good at research and know how to get things done. I’m also I super strong person and don’t take advice from people who have not experienced what I’m trying to achieve. When I found out vaccines were ready, my first thought was, how could I get it and where could I get? I’m honest with myself to know I was born in a “3rd world”/developing country and knew it would be a challenge for my country to get vaccines. I knew that before it was announced. Therefore, I had to creatively find a way to solve my problem and get vaccinated. My next thought was which country could I visit to get it? The research began. I started with the Caribbean, Cayman specifically because my Dad lives in the Cayman Islands, and he had already gotten his first shot. The only problem was, Cayman was still closed. I had to think smarter and do some deeper research. I eventually thought about the US and now had to find a state that was vaccinating everyone and not just a particular age group. When I finally found one state, I shared my plan with a small group of people. Of course they had doubts. All but one. She said go through the process and tell me about it. The others: Don’t go you’re not going to get it because you are not a US citizen. As I said earlier, I’m a strong person and don’t take advice from people who have not experienced what I’m trying to achieve. I recently joined a book club/entrepreneurship mastermind and It just so happened that they were having an in-person Content Creation Bootcamp(in the same State). The stars aligned and I had two reasons to travel. Fast forward to one month and 5 states later, I’m #Pfizered I intentionally didn’t post until I got my second shot. There are so many lessons to take from this story but my biggest take away is, Do your research and don’t take advice from someone who has not already achieved what you are trying to do. Yes, there are exceptions where they are sharing someone else’s experience but most of the time they don’t really know. Do you know how many things you can put in just your carry-on? The day I found out how big a carry-on could be plus the amount of things you could take with you, light bulbs started going off in my head. Did you know that checked bags on airlines are $30 and up? Having to pay for bag fees everytime you travel can be a headache. Challenge yourself to travel with only a carry-on and see how much you save. Research the rules of the country you plan to visit before you go. You need to know if your practice, habits or what comes natural to you, offends anyone, is disrespectful or is even against the law in that country. For example: Tipping is fine in some countries but is seen as offensive in others. Some hand gestures can be fine in one country and is offensive in another. It’s very important to know the rules because you could get yourself in some serious problems. I almost got in trouble because I bought alcohol in Florida and walked out the store with it in my hands without a paper bag. Luckily, another traveler I had met earlier that day, pulled me back in the store and bought me a bag to cover it. It’s illegal to walk around with alcohol like that in most area in the United States except for probably Las Vegas. People mindlessly walk around with alcohol there, in front of the police so I don’t know what laws apply there.
