Dearest Ellie,

When I left I left because of my selfish mom. She pulled us out of school one day and said we were moving. Leaving. Gone. I couldn’t even have told you if I wanted to. And I wanted to. I know I should have called, texted, something but I just wanted you to forget me. You were so much better than I could ever be. So kind, gentle, funny, confident and I got scared. Scared I could never give you what you deserved. Scared I wasn’t going to be the rock you needed. Your family was always so close and mine so, broken. 

I made the biggest mistake of my life. I know that. When I saw you on tv with Graham and watched your smile fade as you turned I knew how you really felt. Because I knew you. I know you. That’s why I had to come back, just if even to give you this letter. I don’t expect you to say anything in return or even forgive me, I wouldn’t forgive me either. But just know that I’m so sorry and if I could go back in time and change it all, I would.
