Week 7 blog
“Balut sir! Balut ma’am! ” these are the words we commonly hear from the balut vendors especially when the cold weather seems to be inviting us to have a taste of these fertilized duck eggs. Balut is a unique ‘street’ food that is only found here in the Philippines. We commonly see vendors of this street food almost everywhere especially when it starts to get dark. Manang Delia, 29, has been a balut vendor for almost 6 years now. She’s single but she’s doing her job for her mother and her siblings in Cagayan de Oro City.
“Gina hatag nako akong kita sa akong mama para matabangan nga maka eskwela akong mga ihsoon ug para maka human sila sa ilang mga pangandoy,” she stated. Finishing only first year high school, Delia dropped from school because of, according to her, “Kina hanglan nako mo undang para ma tabangan nako ang akong pamilya,” she answered when asked why he stopped schooling. Because of this, she decided to have a job that is to sell baluts, just to support the needs of her family.
Being the fifth among the seven children, she wants to do this job to support her family in Cagayan de Oro City especially his siblings who are still attending school. Delia always tries her best to earn money so he could send some to at least help in his family’s expenses. When asked if she’s happy with her job now, she smiled contently and said, “Okay raman pud, bisag ginagmay nga kita ma sustintuhan man pud nako ang mga panginahanglanon sa akong pamilya, mas maayo nalang pud ni kaysa mag buhat ug dili maayo nga tarbaho”.
Because of our interview with manang Delia, we learn and have enlightenment in our heart and mind, that in life, it isn’t really important to have a ‘high-profile’ or a ‘high-status’ job. What’s important is that you do a job that is not only for yourself but also for people around you, for the people you really treasure and support, and for people like your family and your loved ones.

"Balut and Penoy"
On the 14th day of November year 2021, me and one of my group mate decided to stroll on the streets hoping we might find someone with a small business who is willing to be part of our blog. It was already 7:30 pm until we noticed a balut and penoy vendor on the sidewalk of Osmeña street, her name was Cecil, 34 years old, married with 2 children. According to her, it started on the year of 2018, it was actually his brother's idea to put up such business because he noticed that during that year people who comes out to work and school late find something to eat and its always the balut and penoy they've been looking for. And also on that particular year there is not much balut and penoy vendor on the streets so she got she was convinced that it was a good choice to gamble on this kind of business. During their first night selling balut and penoy on the Osmeña street they already finished selling early because of the number of customers on that night. Mostly their challenges on selling were those who doesn't pay after eating or claiming that they ate less and do not pay according what they really ordered. Because of such incidents they supervised every customers who bought and eat at the same time. During the lockdown their business was greatly affected, there were less people who bought balut and penoy so they stop their business for the moment and then after the ECQ was lifted to GCQ they resumed their business and little by little they almost recovered from the effect of the pandemic that has done to them.

"Chelly's fastfood & restaurant"
On the 24th of October year 2021, while visiting at kiliog libona bukidnon, we notice a business that serves food and beverage. I remember that we have a subject to interview some big businesses. The first thing I did was to ask for their permission to be part of my interview blog, lucky for me to get their yes, so I didn’t waste much time and decided to start the interview on the same day. Chelly’s is a fast food restaurant and a place where families gather, reunite, make memories, where they can chill, recharge, be one with nature, experience farm life and just be their self.
On the present day, their business was doing great and they can hook customers easily due to fact that their food is great and delicious. Moreover, they also added more items along the lines of milk tea, cinnamon roll, ice cream roll and etc…
Most of their foods love by the one who ordered it, all of their feedback at Chelly’s fast food restaurant was super great. All the feedback from the food up to the accommodation from the guest was so great and they treat all their customers’ kind with hospitality.
During the pandemic, their business became slow for some time due to the fact that people in CDO who love to come to chelly’s couldn’t go through due to the fact the there is a checkpoint which prohibited the outsiders to come at libona bukidnon. In spite of the fact that there is pandemic, they never close their fast food restaurant because there are also people from libona bukidnon who are love to dine in. a large percentage of the people in libona bukidnon love to drop by at chelly’s and have a chilling time around.
Base on my observations as a blogger and as a student as well, Chelly’s has a potential to grow wide and prospers. Their attitude in serving other has inspired me to use my skills which would benefits more people. They also have online and card payment which can be used to pay the bill. This kind of technology can be perfect alternative from the conventional traditional payment method especially in this kind of situation where physical contact is limited.

#Weekly blog: Entry number 1
On the 11th of October year 2021, while looking for a small business for my subject to interview, I somehow remembered that in my neighborhood a close friend of our family has a “sari-sari store” and I decided to interview them. The first thing I did was to ask for their permission to be part of my interview blog, lucky for me to get their yes, so I didn’t waste much time and decided to start the interview on the same day. The sari-sari store is a store that offers goods according to your daily needs. Their business focuses mainly in rice. While having a conversation on how they come up on their business idea, according to them, they find it interesting on how people bought rice almost every day, so they decided to sell rice on the debut of their small business. Basically, their store wasn’t really a sari-sari store at first. On their first day, they got few costumers and most of their customers are only their neighbors. The second day, they create a tarpaulin to advertise their products, and also the prices of their rice was accessible not only for the rich but also the poor can afford it. The succeeding day was good because of their advertisement and more customers come because of the reasonable price of their rice. More customers were drawn by their store and as days passed by their small business became successful. Because of the success of their small scale business they expanded and they added items on their store. Most of the people on our neighborhood were raising fighting cocks and chickens for consumptions. They grab the opportunity to sell pellets for chickens and for the pigs, and they also sale maintenance and vitamins for the fighting cocks.
On the present day, their business was still doing good, they also added more items on their store. Most of their items were essential and is for every day need, including instant noodles, canned goods, eggs, instant coffee, milk, sugar, beverages, liquors, shampoo, soap and other things that we use everyday. And on that day their sari- sari store was established. Like every business they also faced challenges in operating it. These are some of the challenges they faced along doing business: the competitors, and debit. Their business became slow for some time because of their competitors. There have been many newly opened stores so the customers that they solely have has been divided and was divided again because of the newly opened competitors. The debit also affected their business, some of the customers use debit and there are instances that some debtors can’t pay on their promised due date, and because of that they can’t roll up the money which really affected the stock they sell on the other day. Because of the delayed payments of the debtors they got limited items unlike their usual items on display.
Base on my observations, there were small scale business like store who uses online payment such us Gcash. They can utilize the convenience it gives by just scanning QR code for payment. For a store they also had an e-loading which is perfect for Gcash transactions. This kind of technology can be perfect alternative from the conventional traditional payment method especially in this kind of situation where physical contact is limited.
