I’m currently teaching the first class where ChatGPT is even an option for my assignments, and it’s a career skills seminar.

I just had this talk with one of my students who used ChatGPT for his resume because he was overwhelmed by the amount of work needed to apply for internships. Shockingly, he has not gotten any offers while students who wrote their resumes from scratch are picking between multiple offers.

He did ask if I could tell he used ChatGPT and the honest answer was “no, I can’t immediately tell the difference between ChatGPT and overly generic, imprecise writing, but I can immediately tell that this is bad writing”.

I am begging y’all to learn how to be efficient without outsourcing your writing/thinking to a “most likely word” model, picking the most likely words is going to get you something so generic as to be meaningless.

Also as a prof in natural sciences… how dull it is to look at the intense beauty of reality and our ability to understand why it works and say that the only point of college is to get a job.

I think if you're using AI on your college assignments, especially for your major, there's a deeper problem.

Because whether you think your studies actually matter in the real world or will have consequences... it should matter to YOU. You are supposed to be here because you want to learn from this institution. You chose this major because you think you might want to pursue it as a career.

If you are so disinterested in your work that you are asking chatgpt to do it for you, that's a fucking canary in a coalmine for how much enthusiasm you are going to bring to this field. You shouldn't be studying this topic. And if you're doing this with every one of your classes, you probably shouldn't be at this school at all. You clearly don't want to be.

Maybe this college or this field isn't for you, and that's fine. There's other options. But right now you're just wasting everyone's time and money, especially your own.

You are faced with some random problem and the only person who can help you is the main character from the last piece of media you consumed (you can also do favorite character if there are multiple main characters). You can stay in this universe or be in the universe of the character, whichever you prefer, but the problem remains the same and the only person who can directly help you is the main character. That character can call on the help of those they know in their media, but when it comes down to it, they are the only person really helping you. How do you react to this situation?

Ok drawing birds. Birds have weird shapes that hide under their floof and they can also control their level of floof.

Most recent bird painting on left - lilac-breasted roller referenced from a picture from eBird because I was exhausted and searched “colorful birds”. First one I could find when I started drawing birds 4 years ago on the left, which by coloration you can tell is an American Robin but wow what is that wing doing and the legs couldn’t move and also that doesn’t look like a thrush body plan at ALL

- Get a field guide with an anatomy reference at the front. Bird parts are fairly consistent and if you know how they relate to each other in the abstract, it’s easier to figure out what the bird you’re looking at is doing. For the US, Sibley’s great. Don’t know about other areas, I have a beautiful Birds of Australia field guide but it is also heavy enough to kill a man with.

- references from birders - we’re a weird crowd and will spend forever getting nice pictures of weird little guys to post on eBird or iNaturalist. Bonus guarantee that the ref isn’t AI.

- museums with mounts on display: I have spent many pleasant hours sketching mounted specimens- being able to look at the shapes in a static 3D location is helpful for seeing how the birds fit together.

Also, the things that make silly doodles of birds look good (exaggerated expressions, etc) are going to look weird on a realistic bird because they’re not primates! The things we read as expressions are sometimes things their anatomy just doesn’t do.

Go forth and fail at drawing birds a lot! I look back at my older paintings and they’re flat and have obvious anatomy errors, but that’s the process.

i wish i could draw birds. i can only draw silly doodles of them but if i try to actually draw them it looks so weird. i just wanna draw birds but im either burnt out or i CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO DRAW THEM.
