Sugar Cookie Hearts~

Ingredients:

Cookies {makes 24+}

1 stick of butter (227grams), at room temp 1 cup of white granulated sugar 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract/essence (alternatively you can use any flavouring) 1 large egg 3 cups of plain/all-purpose flour, sifted 2 teaspoons of baking powder ½ teaspoon of salt

Royal Icing

3 large egg whites 4 - 5 cups of icing/confectioners’ sugar (4 cups is ideal for flooding) 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract/essence (again, you can replace with another flavour. For the heart cookies I used lemon juice.) 1 teaspoon of salt

Recipe:

1. Set oven to 175° Celsius (350°F). 2. In a stand mixer, cream softened butter and granulated sugar until smooth and combined. 3. Add vanilla extract and egg. Mix until combined. 4. In a separate bowl, sift flour and add baking powder and salt. Mix thoroughly with a spoon/fork.  5. Slowly add dry ingredients to wet ingredients while mixing until a crumbly dough-like consistency. 6. Using damp hands, mix the dough the rest of the way but be sure not to over work. Separate into 2-3 more manageable balls. Keep each ball wrapped in plastic wrap until you are ready to use them. 7. Sprinkle powder on your desired surface and on your rolling pin to ensure no sticking. Begin to roll out one of your dough balls until it is ¼ of an inch thick. 8. Cut and place on a lined baking tray. Allow room for cookies to spread slightly. 9. Bake for 8 -12 minutes. Place on cooling rack for 1 ½ hours or overnight before icing.
