Chocolate bar 🍫
Tumblr media
1. What are the working and living conditions of the people who produce the cocoa?
Due to the fact Cocoa is highly dependent on intensive manual labour. So, the workers would need to do alot of monitoring and caring with necessary harvesting. Most workers would barely get any type of sleep due to the fact they always have to make sure the Cocoa pods dont all ripen at the same time.
2. How is it produced ? Are there child labour invovled ?
Cocoa is produced originally from the cocoa beans; that happen to grow on cocoa trees. The trees start producing when in an hot and humid climate for them to grow. In Ghana of 2008-2009, there been at least over 1.75 million children working on the cocoa farms. This could be hazardous for children who psychological capabilities are still being developed.
3. How do the producers get the cocoa to the market?
Most if the cocoa comes from the origin countries which is sold through physical market. However, small traders typically buy cocoa beans directly from farmers. When those small buyers sell the beans, those beans will go to wholesalers which then will end up re-selling the beans to exporters.
4. How are the prices set?
The prices for the cocoa is really driven by the commodities market. The commodity market sets the prices based on supply and demand levels.
5. Which international corporations dominate the chocolate trade? Who regulates it ?
The international corporation that dominates the chocolate trade would be Mars( U.S.A). Democratically, the farmer co-ops produce the fair trade chocolate in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. However, the third- party nonprofit Fair Trade regulates working conditions for the chocolate companies to make sure their chocolate is harvested under ethical conditions.
6. How is chocolate marketed?
Some chocolate companies are trying to target certain people like children. They would wrap the chocolate bars in either bright colors to outstand other chcocolatw wrappers or make their labels and advertising cheerful.
7. Where did u buy it ?
I bought my chocolate bar at the Rite- Aid in NorthWood Plaza. But it is sold at Walmart, Target, etc.
8. How much profit does a store owner make on a chocolate bar ?
In small retail or small- business store owner, they produce smaller batches which makes their profit in a low percentages as of 2012 at the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.
9. Are there any hidden cost that are no included in the price you paid ?
I don’t believe there is a hidden cost
10. Consider under payment of labor; environmental impact; government subsidies that are direct ( to the company) and indirect ( infrastructure such as roads , ports , bridges , and water systems); and the health care costs created harvesting transporting processing or eating the food ?
I believe that the workers are not getting paid enough for the time and effort they have to do harvesting and monitoring the cooca trees and beans everyday. They arent provided much healthcare for them nor their family; especially if they were to get into an accident. The company would have to pay for their leave of absence while injured on the job.
11. How are these cost obscured?
Theyre obscured because they aren’t getting paid enough to provide for their family, so most of them have to get a second job. Paying minimum wage doesnt always provide for a small family of 3.

This article describes Webers theory when it came to social class. Weber had three aspects of class that explains that individuals possessions and property defines basically the main difference of classes. Wealthy property owners have easy access to sources of wealth creation. However, Weber did not believe that class necessarily leads to social actio. Marx and Webers theories are not far off from each other but it is definitely stated differently.

Thomas Theorem Example
Individiuals view African Americans as thugs and criminals because of how they are dressing i.e pants sagging for males and for women that are showing “ too” much skin, they’re viewed as sl*ts or prostitute.
Another example is , Communities look at African Americans as “ less educated” due to the fact they only see the bad things i.e fighting in school, dropping out , or even going to jail. The white community don’t want to help the black community, they just want to keep making African Americans feel less and unequal.

Cultural Adaptation
My example for cultural adaptation is children or young adults being diagnosed with mental disorders like AHDH. For me I have ADHD, and this trumps our natural selection due to the fact children or young adults daignosed with this disorder have trouble functioning at the normal rate . Children that are diagnosed either have to take some type of medication to help them focus, which most of the medications given to them makes them calm but not themselves. ADHD or any other mental disorders individuals in the future struggle to learn normally like other “ normal “ people that have regular functioning brains.

Language & Gender in Classroom
The class i chose to make my observations on was my English class with Professor Matunda. This class meets Mondays,Wednesdays, and Fridays at 1:00-1:50pm. While i was observing, I noticed there were 14 females and 5 males that were in the class.
In class we’re reading a novel called “ Their Eyes Are Watching God” and dicussing about marriage, relationship, and sisterhood. The way the professor approaches the class, he talks in a very low voice with no aggression. However, he has a strong Kenya African accent which makes it harder to understand him when he teaches. Even though he has a strong accent, he tries to communicate with us by writing it on the board, or repeating whatnhe asked more than once. In the class, the females are more responsive to the questions he asked unless he chooses a boy to answer.
The males in class barely speak due to the fact there are majority girls in the class that speaks out openly. On the topic we discussed on Friday, 3-5 females spoke towards the topic of marriage and loyalty. Each female spoke about 50 words in full detail. However, on the male side was totally different. They would rebuttal with short answers that included about 20 words, which only one male spoke out that day out of 5 males that attended class. The way the females spoke, they spoke clearer with assertive tone while the males spoke low voices but still made sure they made their point of view clear on the topic. I also, noticed the position of where the males would seat and the females; females would we seated near the professor up front filling the seats while males would go straight to the back of the class.
I also observed that the professor, when teaching, would only chose the females to answer the questions or to read instead of the males; Possibly because females were right in the front. At first the professor wouldn’t pick anybody to do anything because the females in the room would already be engaged into the lesson and answer themselves, but however , if nobody answers his question or volunteer to read he’ll choose somebody randomly. Most of the time when he speaks to the class he makes great eye contact and vice verses.
Furthermore, in my opinion I dont believe his gender has to do with anything on how he communicates and teaches the class, but I do feel as though his culture is really what impacts on how he tries to teach.

Northwoood Plaza
I chose the Northwood Plaza because what drew me towards this place is the fact there are so many industrial fixes. From the abandoned buildings to the pot holes and side walks coming up. The sidewalks at night, that I have observed, are terrible conditions and made me realize when will the community come together and do something about them. Especially walking at nights, tripping over the sidewalks because they are beaten up. Also, having soembody fix up the abandoned buildings, have somebody rent it out or even buy it. Everytime I walk to Rite Aid, I noticed alot of different kinds of people or even children walking to gas station. Some of those people are hanging around the liquor store, or just standing on the block trying to sell drugs, most of them are old heads. However, they dont seem harmful, most of them will speak to you to see how your day been going; starting up a conversation, or some might even just keep to themselves but overall they’re harmless. While I was observing, in the day time there will be a rush towards McDonalds. A long line around McDonalds drive thru. I also observed how you have cars that are parked on the side of buildings to either interact with others in their car, or just to smoke without seeming suspicious. Before I came to Baltimore, I’ve noticed how different the gas station worked from the one I go to back home in Virginia. For example, there would be broken down cars sitting on the side of the gas station, that seems to me that it hasnt been touched or moved in a while. Also, there’s this rule there that the cashier told me, you have to get items that total up to over $5 to use a debit card or credit card. Which in my personal opinion i found that interesting because I’ve never heard of experienced that type of deal or rule in a gas station. Overall, going out and observing usual sceneries, some how makes you realize that they’re unusual and I get to learn alot just by watching and seeing how everybody interact with each other, whether they are kin or strangers.

Models are an example of phenomenon culture.
Knowledge: Models have to understand how to walk, and how to pose when going down the walk way.
Norms: Models must wear the appropriate atire when about to go on a walk way show. Like in the GIF, the ladies are all wearing them same outfit, and their hairstyles can be different but still have the same structure. They also have to wear numbers so judges know which contestant to pick.
Institutions: Their health is the most important institution that comes with being a model. They have to make sure they keep the right physique to pull off different outfits.
Behavior: Models have to act professional as if this was an interview or of course a job. However, they are very competitive against other contestants.
