Chapter 8 Fieldwork
The channel I chose to watch was Disney Channel.
It was around 2am so they were playing a marathon of That’s So Raven all morning. I don’t have cable; however, I do have a Roku. The one downfall of this device is that for commercial breaks they play the same commercials over and over again until the show has completed. As I watched I saw a lot of gender specific commercials, some knowingly addressing the gender norms.
Commercials aimed to point out gender norms:
-       This commercial was a combination of these new electric cars and the newest kid’s kitchen set. During the commercial the little boys were driving around their electric cars all around the house and proceeded to drive them into his sister’s room. While doing this he disturbed his sister and her friends who were cooking on their new kitchen set. The girls screamed and yelled at her brother telling him “get those gross toys out of here”. I found this commercial interesting because they distinctly only had boys okaying with the cars and the girls only playing with the kitchen set. This emphasizes the gender roles that we place and instill in our kids from a young age.
Commercials with no gender roles or norms
-       My favorite of the commercials was the Cheerios commercial. During the commercial they tried to show how eating Cheerios every morning would lead to a great rest of the day. The amazing part about this commercial was that they included couples and families that are not usually acknowledged. They had lesbian and gay couples as well as interracial couples. This is something that more companies should do to expand and include more people of more backgrounds.

Chapter 15 Fieldwork
This past Sunday I visited a catholic church with a friend I met in my class. The community was very diverse and formal with a lot of ritualistic values displayed. The typical attire for this service was very formal, not a single person was underdressed.
 1.     Sacred: Lectionary, Chalice and the Alb
Profane: poor attire, not acknowledging the Priest, not bowing
2.     Separation: being baptized, participating in Mass
Liminality: I did not see any examples of this.
Reincorporation: becoming involved in church activities or becoming baptized.
3.     After attending this service, I can now see how people incorporate these rituals and values into their everyday life. They practice specific prayers for specific events and have certain objects near them that they feel will bless them.
4.     Catholicism places a high value on the bible and the crucifix. The bible holds scripture that bases the values of the faith. The Crucifix is a cross that people of this religion hold with them to feel close to God.
5.     Power was very evident in this church and it could be seen the second you walked in the door. The priest at the front of the church is the head and the members of the church place him on a very high pedestal.
6.     I spoke with a few members of the church on the idea of globalization and most of them said that it would not change their views on the religion. There was only one person I talked to that would be effected by globalization and the only reason was she was drifting away from the church

Immigrant Interview
For my interview I chose to talk to my girlfriend who came here from Canada.
I chose to come to America from Canada because of an athletic scholarship when I was 17. I moved to Baltimore without anyone with me to a place I didn't know anyone. Luckily I was on a team that was very close. However, there were a lot of cultural differences that I didn't realize would even come up. People spoke differently, dressed differently, and treated each other very differently. Even though my primary language is English at times I had a hard time communicating with people. Even in my classes I realized that the spelling of words between the two countries is different. I was really lucky to have gotten this scholarship because there are years long wait lists back home for my major. So now I'm twenty two and working at one of the best hospitals in the country while friends back home are just starting their studies.
I don't really notice any difference in gender roles between the two countries. I think both places women and men share the weight. Although I do think Canada is a little more forward thinking than the US.

This article explains the powerful dynamics between religion and power in every day life in Islam. Countless men and women are killed every day because they are not fully representing the “faith”. Religion is held to such a high standard in Islam that men and women will be put to death for not accurately representing it.

Fieldwork Chapter 14
Relationships: Parents, Sisters, Niece, Girlfriend, Team
1.     Power in my family is balanced by my parents holding most of the power and we do what they want us to do. As we have gotten older my siblings and I have developed a little more power since we are now old enough to decide what is best for us in most aspects of our lives. Between my girlfriend and I the power is pretty much split 50/50. Sometimes it can change depending on the situation but we tend to be even. The power dynamics between my teammates is something that changed every day, if not every hour of the day. My teammates are very heavily opinionated people who like to make sure that their feelings on certain situations are taken into account. Aside from my teammates my coach holds all the power on the team and usually decides how everything is going to go.
2.     Power is usually held by the elder of the group and tends to always favor them. Along with age gender also plays a large role in who holds the power in most situations. Elder men hold power over elder women and the same for younger men and women.
3.     The political negotiations in my family have changed as my siblings and I have gotten older. We are now able to talk with my parents and develop compromises for situations we used to not be able to negotiate. Between my team and my girlfriend, the power is equal and the discussions are always open to make sure each party is happy.
4.     The dynamics are usually set in the beginning of the relationship and change depending on the situation and the length of the relationship.
5.     During my daily life I encounter the state at school as well as my interactions with the campus police.
6.     These relationships show that the state holds the power in my relationship with it. They guide my everyday life and make sure I stay in their parameters.

Family Tree:
My family tree depicts the lack of diversity in gender throughout my family. My family tends to produce a lot of girls and very few boys, and this stands true for the younger members beginning to start their own families. I believe it also shows how big my kinship is. Without going all the way out to the family members we see at family reunions, the group of people in this family tree is still large.

Ethnicity, Race, State, Nation
Ethnicity- Black and White
Race- Biracial
State- United States
Nation- American
I feel like all of these components are working well together in my life. I have never characterized myself as either white or black because I believe I am equally both. Being biracial has allowed me to see no race as greater than the other and to connect with more ethnicities. Each side of my family helps to mold me into the person I am today.

Race Post #2:
I came across this video today and it blew my mind. This black guys were walking around Walmart and an old white lady yelled at them and tried to force them out of the store. She later accused them of having no money and when they told her they had money she said it must be drug money! Black men can’t even go about their day, doing menial tasks, without being harassed about their race.

Race Post 1:
This picture shows how evident racism is in America. We have a person leading our country who is outwardly racist and sexist. It takes a majority of Americans ti elect a president and a majority voted for him which proves a good majority of Americans share racist beliefs.

Human Family Tree
The film on the Human Family Tree gives a plethora of information to contradict the ideals that are going around in society today. The term “race” is a socially constructed term that was used to belittle or praise certain people depending on which race category they fit in. The Human Family Tree opposes the common notion about physical features being distinct markers for different races and explains how they are adaptations that people made as they moved out of Africa to different countries with different weather patterns. To start the film, they took place at a local fair in New York and began asking people if they wanted to know their genetic make-up, and to many peoples surprise they all traced back to Africa.
Throughout extensive research it has been proven that race has nothing to do with a person’s genetic make-up, in fact all humans share around 99.9% of the same DNA. The film introduces two individuals in Africa that all human DNA can be linked back to. The scientific Adam passed on the Y-chromosome that is found in all men and the Scientific Eve carried mitochondria that was given to everyone. The reason people have distinct physical differences, which are often used to characterize people within different races, is due to the adaptations that they made from the new environment they traveled to. People moved to different countries where they had to adapt to the harsh winters or harmful UV rays.
“Race” was created with the .01 difference that each human has to develop hierarchical systems to place some races above others rather than realizing that we are 99% the same and that simple genetic adaptations don’t characterize a person as smart or dumb. If people were to realize that we all date back to the same ancestors than maybe it would be easier for us all to coexist.
