“Why is TaiVan so underrated?” “Why is TaiVan not talked about more?”

Like… we all know why.

1. Taissa is black.

Well, actually, she’s biracial. Meaning that she’s just as white as she is black but due to the racist one drop rule, she’s just seen as black. Biracial people are almost never seen as BIracial. Black characters, especially black female characters are frequently overlooked and dismissed by fandom. It’s why Simone is almost completely ignored. It’s why Tai ships outside of Van are seen as “just platonic”. Even ships that should be more popular aren’t because both parties are not white. TaiLottie, TaiAkilah, Akilottie. Not just black characters either but also other POC that are dark skinned. It’s why Crystal x Misty content is almost nonexistent.

2. Tai and Van go against typical fandom gender roles.

Fandom mostly prefers two white femmes when it comes to lesbian ships but when it’s an interracial ship, fandom prefers the darker skinned one to be more masculine and the lighter skinned one to be more feminine. Tai is femme, despite her short hair and assertive and confident personality and the fact that she’s much taller than Van. Van is the masc, despite her more reserved, laid back and jokey personality. And Van isn’t masc in the way that tumblr fandom likes. They like butches and mascs characters to be almost “man lite”. Van has a “girl next door” tomboy kind of vibe, especially for the 90s.

3. They’re canon.

Fandom prefers noncanon to canon because there’s more speculation to be done. They also prefer messy relationships to less dramatic ones. TaiVan is comparatively sweet, wholesome and functional compared to most of the ships in this show, and that’s including Other Tai.

I will never get over the scene where Joel told Ellie that he was not her father. His ugly words pierced her vulnerable ears like a dagger. The wounding of her heart was so palpable, you could taste it in her eyes. Though we can intellectually grasp the magnitude of this betrayal, we cannot truly put ourselves in Ellie's shoes or imagine the soul-crushing impact of losing not just the bond she shared with a trusted guardian, but her very sense of identity and belonging. At an age when a child needs a stable foundation, a single utterance from Joel shattered the illusion of stability and security she had begun to build.

Ellie was only 14 years old. A lonely girl who had never truly felt the care and concern of another person, someone who simply yearned for someone, anyone, to show they gave a damn about her. Despite everything, she already saw Joel as more than just a companion on the road. Ellie already had strong feelings about her bond with Joel well before the confrontation even began. Her heart got broken not once, but twice. That's why the two of them fought in the first place.

In Ellie's innocent, naive mind, she had already started thinking "I mean something to him." So she already felt deeply disappointed and hurt when reality dawned on her—that Joel just wanted to dump her off with Tommy, a complete stranger as far as she was concerned. In her mind, this was the ultimate betrayal he could have dealt her in that moment. Not only did she realize she probably didn't mean as much to him as she thought (if he really cared, why wouldn't he finish the job himself?), but also that he wouldn't hesitate for a second to leave her with someone she wouldn't feel at all comfortable with—as if her feelings meant nothing to him. So for Ellie, it felt utterly disrespectful on top of everything else. Like the ultimate 'fuck you'.

So when the argument escalated and Joel told her that he wasn't he dad, it made things even worse. Her heart shattered into even more pieces than before. It was like he had already stabbed her in the heart at the start of their confrontation, and these additional words were like pouring salt into the wound and twisting the knife deeper. The happy memories of her time with Joel—the laughter they shared, the adventures they had together—all disappeared as his words sunk in. At that moment, all she could think was "He doesn't care about me. I was so foolish to even think so."
