PUNJAB IN CRISIS: GYATT RAVAGES INCOMPETENT GOVERNMENT
In the span of three days, six government buildings have been bombarded with explosives by a terrorist front who term themselves the Guru Youth Army of Tiger Troops, or GYATT in short. Said buildings include the headquarters of the Punjab Police, the Punjab State Assembly building, the High Courts of Punjab and the regional office of Doordarshan. A number of post offices have also been hit, and communication lines across the state have been largely crippled.
In the blink of an eye, the central government’s authority in Punjab has witnessed a complete collapse, and a state of anarchy prevails on the streets; riots have intensified, shops are being looted by Hindus and Sikhs alike, and women and children are confined to their homes in fear of the violence that runs rampant outside.
While the situation in Punjab cannot be accurately assessed due to safety concerns, there remains not a shadow of a doubt that GYATT forces had planned this operation for months, and strategically taken advantage of the central government authorities’ moments of weakness during which the Lok Sabha and Indian Police Service were plagued by petty infighting. Disagreements between various branches of government, as well as the authorities’ general inability to coordinate swift and decisive action against militant groups fighting for the Khalistan Movement, have been cited as reasons for agencies’ inability to predict and prevent said attack.
News of havoc in Punjab has reached the ears of many an Indian across the country, inciting public furore; Hindus from Bangalore to New Delhi are questioning how the government enabled the movement to develop and flourish, despite the Sikhs having had the odds stacked against them from the very beginning. According to an exclusive interview with Doordarshan, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is set to announce the resignation of her entire cabinet, and intends to step down herself.

Zail Singh Speaks
22 February 1988, Hello India
“Fellow citizens of India, now is the time to put our differences aside and stand for what is right. Rest assured that Mr Swarup is under investigation and the appropriate actions will be taken against him. We have come to a final conclusion of agreements with the Punjab people and partial concessions to the Akali Dal. However, they have put words in my mouth and I did NOT condone the changing of the constitution to place Sikhism as an independent religion in India, rather, I had verbally acknowledged the existence of Sikhism as a religion as a Sikh myself. Dissent was not a crime but the opposition must appreciate the good actions of the government. Politicians and politics without principles is poison. Casteism, regional chauvinism, communalism and the custom of dowry were the greatest enemy of welfare and progress of the country. The current solution places reparations to the victims affected by the attacks and violence. The slander of this government should not be accepted, and I plead the people of India to have faith in the government, the same government who has served you faithfully in the past and will continue doing so.”

Speech, by Chandra Shekhar, to crowds
8 February 1988, Punjab Times
Citizens, as you all know I have been released from prison, and have been freed! It is wonderful to breathe the fresh air of our great Indian nation. However, our nation is being wrecked by the people, this extremists, who are committing acts of violence against our great nation.
However, let’s not be confuse the extremists and the freedom fighters. In a show of cooperation, the leader of the Akali Dal, Prakash Singh Badal has attempted to visit me in prison. While I was long out of prison by then, I do appreciate the efforts and show of solidarity from the Akali Dal in my fight for my voice to be heard in the central government (given that someone has tried to jail me for treason for calling out the central government).
I have met up with the Akali Dal again, this time without any confusion with logistics. Returning the show of support they have attempted to show the Janata party and also showing that despite the turbulent crisis we
While I cannot resolutely agree with everything the Akali Dal has proposed, such as the recognition of Sikhism as an official religion, I do support the Akali Dal in their fight for liberty, the right to practice their own religion, the basic life necessities of food and agricultural yields and of course, the basic right to life that Shival Swarup has brutally taken away.
People, whether you are Hindu, Tamil or Punjab, let it be known that the Akali Dal are not the extremists we stand against, but people fighting for their freedom. While I cannot resolutely support everything they stand for, I do support their rights, and their basic rights to life.
I would finally like to extend my condolences to the innocents, regardless of religion, who died in the bombing of the Golden Temple. I extend my sympathy to the families and friends of the innocents.
Thank you for your time

Revelations.
27 January 1988, Punjab Times
A private interview has been held, consisting of opposition party leader of Janata Party Secular, Charan Singh and reporters.
Charan Singh states,”When I asked a tenant farmer in my home town, he says" It seems like the Hindu elites and foreign corporations are affiliated and supported by the central government. The central government has done nothing about the exploitation of us, local farmers. Foreign corporations and Hindu elites are taking ownership of most of the land in New Dehli. And now, they are tricking us into signing exploitative contracts where my pay is lower than before. As a tenant farmer, we have also found that elites and foreign corporations are loaning us land at unfair prices, however, we still have to borrow land from them as they own all of the land here! We can’t survive. We can’t.”
