What if you use a garbage disposal as a trashcan?
We all know the utility of garbage disposal present in our kitchen. It has made our lives so easy. But if it is not properly used it can be a reason for many plumbing problems. It can clog your drain causing many complications in your plumbing. In a few cases, a garbage disposal can break down completely. The best part is that you can avoid most of the complications. Take care of your garbage disposal and prevent the unnecessary expenditure of fixing the clogged drain. Proper maintenance of the garbage disposal will increase the life of it and it will also prevent any major plumbing mishaps. The first important thing to keep your garbage disposal in healthy condition is by not treating it as a trashcan. There are few things that are not meant to be discarded in your garbage disposal. Let’s see what we should never grind in a garbage disposal:
Don’t grind glass items, plastic, and paper materials.
Avoid pouring grease and fats in the garbage disposal. The fat can accumulate in the drain and slowly it can clog your drains. It can also accumulate on the blades of garbage disposal affecting its functioning.
Avoid grinding fibrous food particles like celery stalks, onion peels, corn husks etc. The fibers can entangle in the blades of the garbage disposal causing the motor to jam. These fibers can also block the drains in a long run.
Starchy food in the garbage disposal can stick to the blades of your disposal so avoid putting excessive starchy food like potatoes and beans.
Spaghetti, pasta, and rice expand when they come in contact with water. So you should avoid grinding them in your garbage disposal. The particles will swell up and will block your drain.
You should not grind some fruits seeds in the garbage disposal like the seeds of avocado and peach. They are too hard for the blades of your garbage disposal.
Few people dump the eggshells in their garbage disposal but it should not be done. The shell membrane lining can stick around the disposal causing it to break down prematurely.
You should also prevent putting coffee grounds in your drains. It can pile up in the drain and can clog it severely.
Avoid putting bones in the disposal. They will not go down instead they will keep on rotating around with the blades.
Don’t fill your garbage disposal with a large quantity of food at a time. Grind little food in one go. This will keep your garbage disposal running efficiently for a long time.
Don’t pour harsh chemicals in the garbage disposal. In order to unclog the drain, using chemical cleaners is a common practice. These chemicals can damage the blades of your garbage disposal. You can use borax which is a natural drain cleaner. It will sanitize your sink and will work effectively in preventing the growth of odor-causing molds and bacteria.
Avoid turning off the water until grinding is complete. When your disposal is done grinding, turn it off first and then keep the water running for another 20 seconds before turning it off.
Don’t pour any combustible liquid in the drain. It can increase the risk of fire in your home.
A garbage disposal is made only to grind biodegradable food so if you put anything in it that you shouldn’t, it’s going to damage it. Little care and maintenance can keep your plumbing and garbage disposal working for a long time. Mesa Plumber can give you more details about this.
