she chuckled at his final decision when it came to the decorations and found herself chuckling. “you’re making me really wish they’d have hired you for the decorations, because i bet you’d have done a great job. and not make it so–prom like,” she took another drink from one of the waiters before raising an eyebrow at his words. “oh? and here i was worried people were going to think my dress isn’t black tie enough for this event. but thank you.” she grinned before turning to look at him. “i feel like i’ve seen you around–but we haven’t met. i’m jade, jade park.”

“you wouldn’t want that, trust me. i stack empty beer cans on the table and call it decorating.” a lopsided grin crept across his features as the girl lamented about her dress, prompting a smartass remark of, “hate when that happens...” all mildly sarcastic quips aside, his appreciation for her company was expressed in the briefest of genuine smiles, glass extended out in a small cheers. “jade... jed. it’s nice to meet you. i know i’m hard to recognize when i’m not following around all my bandmates. this—” he vaguely gestured to himself, off on his own and not attached at the hip to arden, “—is a rare sight.”

she looked down at her dress, and then back up at everyone else’s and instantly knew she’d made a mistake. but the truth was, if she’d worn something floor length–she’d look even tinier and considering just how small she was–it wasn’t something she wanted. so she made a beeline for the bar, and took hold of a glass of wine while she surveyed the rest of the crowd. this was her first time despite coming to wintergreen over a year ago, but last year–she’d been a recluse and was happy with that. this year though, she wanted to be different, she wanted to find people to be friends with and thankfully she was well on her way to that. “the decorations are amazing right?” she said quietly, not knowing who was standing with her. 

“they’re... fine,” jed decided, his lack of interest in the event overall was not to be confused for annoyance at his latest company. in fact, he welcomed it. until now, he’d spent a majority of the evening latching onto one friend and then the next for social support. the real holiday miracle was that he was still here and hadn’t bolted hours ago. “i mean, it’s sort of over the top, in a prom-meets-dollar-store kind of way.” not unlike a majority of the actual attendees, might he add. jed was far from being the pinnacle of style and fashion, but he wasn’t blind to the way some partygoers seemed to dress themselves elaborately in a tawdry manner as though to compensate for something or some void in their lives. something about the girl who’d joined him was refreshing. “too bad they didn’t take style tips from you.”

absently, the male plucked at the strings. his faraway gaze was fixed nowhere in particular, a sure sign that his mind was somewhere extrasolar as opposed to here on earth, where he’d planted himself with a guitar, attempting to channel that rare, inspired energy into something halfway productive. for a moment, he was blissfully unaware of tabi’s presence nearby until he paused, eyes blinking back to focus and returning his attentions to his latest company with uncertainty. “it’s… a work in progress.”

“three for three huh? listen the cook isn’t really awake yet, and god knows i can’t cook. but you can go into the kitchen and make yourself food? make sure to bring me back some too though.” @jedlynch

“didn’t realize anyone was counting,” the coy smirk that followed was entirely feigned. at this point, it was beginning to feel like deja vu, and ironically, he still wasn’t getting any better at this whole... thing. “actually— i mean, i noticed you were out of eggs... i should go,” again, “go, uh— get you some more...”

Addy grinned at his response, happy that he’d chosen to accept the compliment. After all, he should be willing to accept it, seeing as she was being completely truthful as she said it. “I don’t mind the cold. It’s nice sometimes, and it’s much easier to get warm than it is to get cool when it’s hot. I’m not from somewhere warm, not really– Chicago, and then New York, so both reasonably cold places quite a lot of the time. But I feel like it’s colder here,” she admitted. “And why I came here? Well, that’s a complicated story that I don’t think I want to bore you with.”

“i suppose you’re right. you can always put layers on, but there’s only so much you can... take off,” conscious of the suggestiveness of his tone, he trailed off until his words were hardly audible, eyes shifting rather awkwardly until he distracted himself with another sip of beer. “i really doubt it’s boring,” the guitarist began, clearing his throat, “and if you haven’t noticed, i’m never really too busy for a long, complicated story.”

“hey, short stack,” the smile he offered was genuine, but that didn’t stop the hesitancy he displayed at the word ‘fun’ – as though it were something frightening. “i have nothing but time— but this depends on your definition of fun.”

arden already had the key, so there was no need to knock. if jed was doing anything he didn’t want arden to see, then that was too bad, he already sent him a couple of texts that he was coming over with food. he wrestled the door open between the bags of take out and smiled brightly at his friend. “guess who’s got the goodies!”

upon his bandmate’s abrupt entrance, jed’s only reaction was that of someone who had been doing something far more scandalous than reaching his 6th hour of being seated in front of the tv, plastered to his xbox controller. in fact, the dark circles under his eyes were beginning to form, but his expression quickly brightened. “are there swedish fish?” he asked hopefully, just now realizing this might’ve been the first time he’d talked let alone torn his eyes away from the tv or event eaten all day. “—uh, this isn’t what it looks like.”

“if you do it right, it’s anything but muted, alexandra.” it took all his strength to not pull a face at the girl like they were bickering children. “anytime you want to apologize for being so mean to me, i’ll be waiting.”

Addy sat the guinness down on the bar in front of him and then leant down on it herself, looking him in the eyes. “I’m not going to push, but I am going to say that whatever’s in that little notebook of yours,” she nodded down to it. “is definitely some kind of work of genius, especially if it came outta your head.” Standing back up, she moved on to his change of subject. “Yeah, well, the weather’s pretty cold. I’m gonna have to stock up on jackets, I think.”

his head ducked in a sheepish manner in response to the praise, but that didn’t stop a smile from crossing his features. “it’s not— i mean, i’m not that good, but... alright, fine— i’ll shut up and accept the compliment already.” shaking his head and mentally kicking himself, he reached for his beer to keep himself occupied, draining a good third of the glass in one go. it was easier to let others talk. “i’m not really one for the cold. and before you say anything, it wasn’t my first choice to come here,” he rambled whilst inspecting the condensation gathering on his glass, “why did you come here? —especially when it sounds like you’ve come from someplace warm?”

“And we meet again,” B laughs, waking up to wide-open eyes. “If you give me like five minutes I can make us tea? I take it you’re not much of a coffee drinker?” @jedlynch

“uh...” there was no pretending to be asleep now, he’d been caught, “—hi.” for only a fraction of a second, there almost appeared to be a grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. alas, it faded just as quickly, and he promptly sat upright. “it’s because i’m british, isn’t it?” was that a joke? who was he. “actually, i should— y’know, be going...”
