December 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor Is Attacked 

On this day in 1941, the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by 350 Japanese aircraft. Twenty-one ships were sunk or badly damaged, including eight battleships. Almost 200 American planes were destroyed and another 150 damaged. 

Only a week earlier, on December 2, Hawaii had received a message from Washington that began, “This is a war warning.” By deciphering Japanese codes, the United States uncovered plans of a Pacific attack, but did not know the location or time. No one believed it would be Pearl Harbor. The attack at Pearl Harbor entered the consciousness of contemporary Americans more forcefully than any other single event.

In a clip from “The War,” late Senator Daniel Inouye recounts how he was preparing to go to church when three Japanese aircraft flew over his family’s house on their way to attack Pearl Harbor.

Colorado changes ‘Mile 420’ highway marker to stymie stoner heists

A sign marking the mile 420 on a Colorado highway was replaced with one that reads “MILE 419.99” — after the old one was repeatedly stolen by weed-enthusiasts, according to the state’s transportation department.

This is a real obituary. A really harsh one. The date is mistaken (which led to a brief takedown of the text), but the text itself, as well as the person who died, were real. The Reno Gazette-Journal, realizing it had a powerful piece of text sitting in its paid obituaries section, did an interview with the woman who wrote this about her own mother. Katherine Reddick, describing the challenging life they faced, had this to say: “The things she did to us were horrible. But it’s still happening to kids every day.”

A Salafi group called the “Popular Egyptian Islamic Association” has warned Muslims against eating tomatoes on the grounds that the fruit is a “Christian food,” NowLebanon.com has reported. The group based its claim on the fact that a shape resembling a cross is revealed when one cuts a tomato in half.
