What's it like to have a job interview with Elon Musk?
Answer by Jeff Nelson:
I interviewed with X Commerce in 1999 (later renamed to PayPal), and it was one of the strangest interview experiences of my career. At the time, the company had something like 10 employees, none of whom were serious backend engineers except Elon Musk himself, so when they brought me in for the first day of interviews I talked to several people, but it was all soft skills. They kept telling me that Elon would do the tech interview.

What is the most powerful tool ever developed by humans?
Answer by Jeff Nelson:
IMHO, the printing press was the most powerful tool. Prior to the printing press it was very difficult to share and retain knowledge across cultures. Maybe that's even partly why humans, who were basically genetically identical to us, took tens of thousands of years to advance beyond the Stone and Bronze ages.

How can I make a habit of waking up early in the morning?
Answer by Jeff Nelson:
Get a dog. They are the best alarm clock on 4 legs. They'll never let you sleep in, because they need to be fed and let outside each morning at exactly the same time. Note: This is one of the worst reasons to get a dog.

Was IBM as hyped as Google today 15 years ago?
#Microsoft Answer by Jeff Nelson:
I agree with Nick Malik IBM's heyday was in the 1960s and 1970s. Back then, it was pretty much the same hype as Google currently enjoys. Everyone who worked for IBM was a genius, etc. By 1980, Microsoft and Bill Gates were starting to eat IBM's lunch and the hype machine turned it's attention to them. Around 1995, the Internet boom started, people started talking about companies like Yahoo, Netscape, AOL, Excite, and WebVan, while wondering why Microsoft had so badly missed out on the new opportunities.

What are the pros and cons of Chrome OS vs Splashtop OS?
#googlechrome Answer by Jeff Nelson:
A bit of history: Under a mutual 1-year NDA, we (Google) approached Asus in July/August 2007 with our plans to build Chromebook, and asked if they'd like to partner with us on it. We showed them all the designs and screenshots of what we intended to do with the new concept of a Chrome webtop based on Google services. 6 months later, they launched EEE PC with embedded Splashtop OS. I guess Asus decided they could beat Google in a footrace to build the first webtop. And they did build it before Google, but ultimately Google won the race.

Is Google a good company to join for a mid-career software developer with > 10 years of experience?
#software #engineer? #googlechrome #jobs Answer by Jeff Nelson:
That's an excellent question if a complicated one to answer. I can only speak for myself of course, but I'll try to make my answer as representative as possible. A few issues a senior hire might run into include:
Google is geared for hiring new grads. I'm not sure exactly what percentage of hires is new grads, but it's a large fraction if not the majority. As such, many of Google's practices are geared for new grad hires.

What is the most catastrophic mistake made by an intern at a company?
? #quora Answer by Jeff Nelson:
Not at a tech company, either, (maybe need a new question for student screwups?) when I was back in college as an undergrad, I was hired as a research assistant mostly to build numerical models for a physics lab. As a kind of reward, they flew me out to Fermi Lab for a week to "help with" the actual experiments - as if an undergrad could really contribute in any meaningful way to a billion dollar research facility. So, my professor came up with a project to wire up some NIM logic cabinets for one of the experiments, which is really quite boring. It's just plugging in calibrated cables of different types and sizes according to a diagram; a bit like setting up a data center, if a data center had 20 different types of cables that all had to go in particular plugs on the front panel. What I didn't know, the experiment was live! The cabinets were live! Worst of all, the fire suppression system was live! I went about my business for about two hours, when I bumped the fire suppression system. (BBBUUZZZZZZZZzzzzzzooooo..............) (room goes pitch dark) Having set off the fire alarm, the automatic emergency protocol was to kill all power to everything, including the experiment (a 4 mile circumference particle accelerator)...

Why did Chrome slow down over time?
#Googlelow? Try these tricks to speed it back up. Answer by Jeff Nelson:
I've been seeing a lot of Twitter chatter about this in the past week, but so far, I haven't seen a thorough analysis with a smoking gun. I doubt it's caused by bloat. Chrome has always been bloated. If you have ever built Chrome and seen the enormous list of dependencies, it's almost as large as building a Linux distro - but that's been true for years. A couple things to try to diagnose any speed issues you've seen:
