hotch spends a lot of time thinking about what to get garcia on her birthday. he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about the little card, her curling script, and knows he has to repay her. so, he ends up getting her a little plant that he knows she’ll take excellent care of. it’s green and bright, no petals but big wide leaves.

it seems the right amount of thoughtful and just perfect for her, and so when he presents it and stammers a little bit over what to say (“i - i wasn’t sure if this was - i suppose, appropriate”) her grin and delighted laugh seems evidence that he did good. did really good. he thinks about that laugh on the way home, the same way her penmanship with his name has lingered.

it becomes habit. giving gifts to each other. little things out of sight of the team. hotch becomes aaron and garcia becomes penelope, and sweet thoughtful moments left on desks. he always tends towards flowers (potted, never cut), and she always grins and hugs them close to her chest and thanks him profusely for thinking of her.

it evolves into texts and calls and a hesitant question (“i wasn’t sure if you would want to, but. i’d be honored to take you to dinner, if you’ll let me”). and when he drops her off after, her laughter bright and loud and his smile big and bold, she smirks and nods him inside.

“c’mere. let me show you something.”

that something, after stepping carefully through penelope’s home, after looking at each and every piece of her place he has the privilege of glancing at, he sees a lot of things. knickknacks and a record player, string lights and his flowers. so many of his flowers. and when he stops, it’s because he’s almost bumped into her, catching a whiff of her hair and looking up at a potted tree. green and bright with big wide leaves.

“it’s the one you gave me,” she says gently, and their first kiss is shared under that birthday gift, surrounded by the other little gifts he gave over to brighten her world.

(“i didn’t realize it was a tree,” he laughs when he pulls away, and she just giggles and kisses his cheek.

“just think about how much more growth she has in her,” she tells him. “it’ll be beautiful to see.”

aaron nods, and smiles, just hopes against hope he gets to see it alongside her.)

the french senate has voted so that no girl below the age of 18 can wear hijab or niqab in public and that no hijab-wearing muslim mothers can accompany children on school field trips. furthermore, the french government is moving to ban halal slaughter of poultry by july 2021 on the grounds this method of slaughter has been deemed “less humane” than standard french practice.

primarily white “feminists” who otherwise advocate for bodily autonomy have either been silent or explicitly supported the first piece of legislation. here is a change.org petition created to oppose the hijab/niqab ban. as a reminder, when you go to sign, do not select the option to donate: none of the funds go to the cause. when you’re signing, use numbers from 75001 to 75021 (french zip codes) because international/fake zip codes will invalidate your signature (via zhongsliang on twitter).
