something about aba therapy that i feel is worth noting:
aba therapists are the only type of therapists in the united states that are not required to have a college degree in order to practice. the vast majority of aba therapists i’ve met don’t have one.
then what are the requirements, you may ask?
be at least 18. have a high school diploma. complete a few hours of general training.
that’s it.
they’re also allowed to teach your child literally whatever they want. i saw a video of someone the other day who was put thru aba as a child. they were obsessed with the color blue, so what did the aba therapist do? gave every child in their class except them a blue piece of paper for weeks until they stopped crying about it. aka, until they were too numb to the emotional pain of being left out to react anymore.
i guess the end goal was to make them…not like…the color blue anymore? like, seriously. what was the point of that???
they teach children to smile on command even when they don’t feel happy. they teach autistic children not to stim - something that has been proven not only beneficial but necessary for autistic people’s wellbeing.
they can withhold water, food, or affection from your child until the child complies with whatever behavior they want them to complete. i wish i was joking.
this is literal child abuse.
the only therapy that does not require a degree to practice, abusive as hell, manipulative, they are literally allowed to teach your child whatever the hell they want…and yet it’s also the only therapy for autistic children that is covered by most insurance companies.
make it make sense.

When you do something and boomers question it....
Me talking to my pre-school students about the charachter Julia from seasme Street. She is on the Autsim spectrum. My students are on the Autism spectrum. I thought it would be cool to show them a video/song of Julia and her family from one of the episodes, you know show representation. And ny TA boomer who has an 18yr old daughter on the spectrum says "well I just recently told (name) her diagnosis"
I said nothing but OMFG she's 18 and just recently was told why she learns and acts differently. I would feel so betrayed if my mom kept me in the dark with my ADHD like I used to beat myself up saying I was stupid and my moms response was that "I learned differently and at my own pace".... drafttff more to come

All of these books are queer, but they all have back blurbs that don’t say they’re queer. While this can be a pain if I’m scouting for queer SFF, it can come in handy for people in a situation where they don’t want to be reading queer books openly.
Please do note that I don’t have hard copies of the books on hand so it’s possible that an author quote or something mentions one being queer (I feel like this isn’t super likely, but I don’t want to rule it out). Some might also have author biographies mentioning that the author is queer. Also, some may be shelved as LGBT on Goodreads or categorized as queer on Amazon. So if you’re planning on asking for any of these as holiday gifts, I would suggest going to the Amazon page or where ever your relative is likely to buy it from and double check that it’s something you’d be comfortable with sharing openly.
I wish I had more pansexual books, but the ones I know of tend to mention queerness in the back description.
With the exception of The Spy with the Red Balloon, these are all books I have read or are currently reading. If you want to recommend others, feel free to do so in the replies!
You can find my other queer book recommendations here.
Links to the queer books database (or Goodreads if the book hasn’t been added yet) are available below the cut. You can find information on content warnings there.

why are there all these posts n articles n stuff that are like “girls can have short hair!” “girls can wear suits!” but all the women shown are still always only feminine, and whats actually being said is “girls can have short hair and still be feminine!” and “girls can wear suits and still be attractive to men!” like whenever women want to do something men (and sometimes other women too, but men are awful at this) have to find a way to make it Still Okay, Still Acceptable to them, instead of just letting women be! women dont need to fit any standards of femininity or beauty to do something, and they certainly don’t need mens approval
