Social media hasn’t seen much of me these past few days because well... FAMILY! Ok let’s chat metabolism and how mine has completely decreased as I get older. Back in the day I would eat 3 cheeseburgers, shake and fries on a regular basis and my weight didn’t budge. Being marketable was never why I started. Being true to myself and my passion for creating always has been. I post these pics because these are some of the most powerful images I have created. Me. Just me. You can read all about how they came to be in an equally powerful post I wrote a few years back. (Link in bio) I recently had a conversation with @vanavain who reminded me of the impact of this blog post. Brands didn’t check for me after it. I didn’t get featured on the lists of bloggers you should know. I was not invited to all sorts of fashion weeks but guess what did happen? I broke free. I let me shine through. Blogging in DC isn’t easy. This area was very saturated with the same type of look for so long. I tried it. I looked and felt like a fraud doing it. I wanted so badly to become successful and “seen” that I emulated what the successful ones on the area were doing. But that shows how small I was thinking. That proves how insecure I once was. This was evidence that I had no vision on what I wanted my community to me. Let’s be real... at that’s time I didn’t even know I had a community or wanted to build one. 🙌🏾Fast forward to now and I really am straight outta ducks (read the blog post to better understand this). These photos were fully executed by me and I am so proud of them. 🙌🏾As most of you know I have a HUNGER to content create full time. So I’m working my butt off to get there. But as I create content I have only ONE thing that is a non-negotiable— does this content make ME happy. I love you all- my audience and community but creating my art that accurately represents me is at the top of my list. So yeah, I may not be marketable but I’m me and my daughter will forever be proud of that legacy. Ending this long winded post with this: relatability and authenticity are the nee buzzwords that everyone strives for but if it’s a trend or strategy, is it still authentic? Will that strategy adjust again when a new way of posting comes to be the “it” thing? Thank you for my little #injentrospect moment. p.s. I remember those sunglasses. They were a dark blue tint. They were the ultimate 70s style shades and every time I saw my mom in them I was excited. I don’t have many memories of my baby years but at least 80 percent of the ones I have involved fashion. No joke. I remember my favorite backless summer dress (my mom still has it and I cannot wait to put Teagan in it one day), I remember this cow print jumpsuit, these shades of my moms, I remember all the gold jewelry my bio father used to wear and especially his Star of David around his neck, I remember my grandmothers semi kitten heels. This pic though, this pic speaks volumes. Thankful for all the memories I’m currently making, have made, and will make. This is the importance of photography to me. I go above and beyond to capture a lot of moments because it’s what often keeps me going. After my dad and grandmother passed within months of each other, I was so thankful that I had taken so many videos and pics with them. They get me by until I one day will join them. Keep capturing y’all. It’s important. Did you know that over 75% of the food deserts in #WashingtonDC are located in Ward 7 and 8? #ad Before I move on, let’s do some education on food deserts for those who may not be familiar. A food desert is an area where access to affordable and nutritious food is limited. I was recently talking to my best friend—a DC native and Ward 8 resident—and she told me that there is ONE grocery store in the entire area and it really isn’t accessible to all. Like how?!?!?⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Yeah, it’s upsetting but I also found a positive note! @Amazon is making grocery shopping more accessible to all by offering the ability to pay online using a SNAP EBT card and delivering groceries to your home for free. But it gets better! At one point in my life, I was a little speedy Gonzales. This was before age got the best of my knees and my sweet tooth got the best of my belly. But since I started the #seeyououtthere running challenge with @dickssportinggoods I’ve noticed that I have way less knee pain even after running sprints on the concrete. Either I’m getting stronger or these @nike running shoes are REALLY absorbing all the shock. “Ohhhh they added the fat laces”. This is the first thing my husband @jensplusone said when we received these @puma shoes to style for the whole family. #ad It’s funny because we all differ in sneaker preference (well Teagan doesn’t have her own style yet) but we were def in agreement about how dope these red suede Pumas are. I’m going to rock mine with jumpsuits, dresses, my beloved denim cut-offs for the summer, and @jensplusone and his fat laces can easily do joggers and shorts. He even paired them with a summer suit and the look was 🔥! Actually, I may pair these with a summer suit too.
