Week12 final image
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Introduction
My theme, "Hues of Solitude," focuses on seeing the world through a lonely lens and finding moments of joy in that solitude. Initially, I considered working with a "dream" theme, but after trying different ideas, I realized they didn't quite fit. This led me to explore the beauty hidden in isolation.
The photos were taken in central Auckland, showcasing everyday urban scenes like roads, traffic, flowers, and buildings. Using black-and-white with bursts of bright colour, I wanted to show how joy can emerge from loneliness. My work was inspired by photographer KangHee Kim, whose surreal imagery blends reality with dream-like elements. Her use of vibrant colors influenced my decision to bring a whimsical feel to the urban landscape, encouraging viewers to see the beauty in quiet, overlooked moments. “Kim photographs the world within her grasp, the geography she is permitted to cover, namely the 50 states. She then stitches various images together digitally to create a surreal landscape of the world she dreams she could access.”(KangHee Kim, n.d.). I found a lot of inspiration from browsing her work. I admire her use of colors, imagination, and the way she skillfully combines elements in her photos. Many of her images resonate with me, and I am drawn to the dream-like world she creates in her fantasy shots. However, my theme differs from hers. While she focuses on surrealism, my work leans more towards highlighting the feeling of "loneliness," emphasizing the contrast between the vibrant fantasy world and the starkness of reality.
Context and Concept
" Hues of Solitude " delves into the connection between isolation and beauty in downtown Auckland's urban landscape, reflecting my experience as an international student. Living in a foreign country can often feel lonely and challenging, but I still find moments of beauty, even if they are imagined. The project contrasts black-and-white imagery with pops of vibrant color, capturing everyday scenes like streets, buildings, and nature to symbolize joy found in solitude, transforming daily life into whimsical, emotionally resonant visuals.
In the first image, I transformed a familiar street into black and white, highlighting colourful decorations above that remind me of the M&M candies I often eat. In the second image, I captured a building with windows that resemble "imprisonment," imagining it filled with flowers. The third image features a staircase, which led me to think of the scene from "Tom and Jerry" where an elevator ascends to heaven, so I added the sky and a lighthouse to symbolize guidance.
If I were to showcase my images i would place then in an art gallery to show to the public. i want my images to be seen in the landscape of the city.
Self – Reflection
This semester, I felt I wasn’t in the best condition. Besides physical reasons, I was confused about the project at the start, which made it hard to find a theme. I think not having a clear theme is the hardest part. Composite images require technical and creative skills and a clear idea. Using the software, I had to think about layout, color, and texture. Balancing realism with artistic style was tricky, and the process needed patience and openness to experimenting and refining unexpected results. This experience will have a key impact on my future photography. I've learned how to better combine technical skills with creativity to make meaningful manipulated images. In the future, I'll focus more on defining my theme early on and experiment more with balancing real and artistic elements. This process has also taught me to be patient and open to unexpected results, which I can use to improve my work. Overall, it’s been a valuable lesson in developing my style and approach to projects.

Week 11 - Photography
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This week, I accumulated a lot of photos, and these are some of the highlights. I finally decided on my final theme: "Hues of Solitude", so I took a lot of photos of related themes near the city's harbor, discarding some previous ideas and photos.

Week10 - The advantages and the disadvantages of the work ( self-reflection)
Looking back at "Hues of Solitude," one of the strengths of the work is how it visually shows feelings of loneliness by using bright colors against black-and-white backgrounds. The bright colors represent moments of joy in isolation. However, keeping a consistent tone across different images while working with an abstract idea was challenging. Also, some technical limits in editing made it harder to get the exact look I wanted, which means I need to improve my editing skills to bring my vision to life.

Mariyan Atanasov's photography captures everyday life while mixing real elements with a hint of surrealism. He skillfully uses light and shadow to create a dreamlike feel, drawing viewers into his stories.
The most interesting part for me is his buildings which are similar to "Tetris".

Week8 - Responds of vedio:Watch task Jonas Bendiksen, Magnum Photographer, on the Book of Veles
youtube
In the video with Jonas Bendiksen, he talks about his project, "The Book of Veles," which looks at the mix of reality and fiction in today's internet and photography. Bendiksen explains how digital tools can change images and tell stories, making it hard to tell what is real and what is made up. This project encourages people to question whether the images they see are genuine and to think critically about them in a world full of altered visuals.

Week 8 Research - Photographer
Tumblr media
Douglas Mandry values the basic parts of a photograph—like chemicals, pixels, time, space, and the subject—just as much as the final image. The Swiss photographer combines digital and analog techniques to explore the relationship between photography and reality. He believes we consume so many images now that we no longer fully understand or appreciate them. His experimental work invites viewers to closely examine photography itself, highlighting how, in today's image-filled world, we may be too immersed in photographs to see their true value.
I found a lot of inspiration in her photos, particularly drawn to the contrast of colors and the natural elements she uses. The combination creates a visually striking effect that captures my attention.

Week7 SDL - Photo
Tumblr media
Dream: explores the theme of "dreams" by blending surreal elements with real-world settings to create a sense of wonder and imagination. Inspired by dreamscapes, I used layers of contrasting imagery to express how dreams mix reality with fantasy. Through vivid colors, unusual compositions, and unexpected details, the images challenge the viewer to look beyond the ordinary and enter a dream-like world where anything is possible. This series reflects the power of dreams in unlocking creativity and new perspectives.
Based on the theme of the dream, I came to Devenport, intending to accumulate materials about the dream. I photographed the sea, the lighthouse, and so on.

Week7 - Brainstorming (idea)
Ideation - develop three possible ideas
Time Warp: Create images that combine different historical periods into a single scene. For example, a modern street could be mixed with people, cars, and objects from past decades. This idea explores how time shapes city life and culture by blending elements from different eras, showing the contrast between the past and present.
Emotional Duality: Use opposite colors or mirrored images to show two different emotions, like happiness and sadness. You could edit portraits or scenes to show a mix of inner feelings, with each side of the image showing a different mood. This can reflect emotional conflict or balance.

Week7- The End of Professional Photography?
youtube
The rise of AI in photography brings both new opportunities and ethical concerns. AI can simplify editing, create highly realistic images, and even produce complete artworks, allowing photographers to explore new creative ideas. However, it also raises issues about what is authentic, who controls the artistic process, and how much human involvement is still needed. This change challenges photographers to embrace new technology while still preserving the traditional values of photography and maintaining a balance between innovation and artistic integrity.
