Hydrogen Peroxide Vs Rubbing Alcohol: This Is What You Need To Know

If you've been following my blog for a while, then you've probably already noticed that many of the same ingredients pop up again and again in my homemade cleaning solutions. These superstar cleaning ingredients include things like baking soda, vinegar, and essential oils, just to name a few. But the two cleaning ingredients we'll be talking about today seem to be among the more mysterious: hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol.

I have received a lot of questions about these two substances over the years. So to help clear up the confusion and get us all on the same page, I thought it was high time that I wrote a blog post about it! Today I'll be covering everything you've been wondering about hydrogen peroxide vs. rubbing alcohol, including what they are, how they are different, what uses each one is best suited for, and more.

Hydrogen Peroxide vs Rubbing Alcohol: The Basics

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a chemical compound made up of two hydrogen molecules and two oxygen molecules. It is a naturally occurring substance produced in small amounts in the bodies of many animals, including humans. It has antibacterial, bleaching, lightening properties.

Rubbing alcohol, also referred to as isopropyl alcohol, is a different chemical compound entirely (C3H8O, for the curious!) It is a highly effective solvent, and dissolves a wide range of compounds including oils. It has antibacterial qualities and evaporates quickly.

Should I Use Hydrogen Peroxide Or Rubbing Alcohol For Cleaning Wounds?

Actually, you're better off not using either! While both substances have antiseptic qualities, neither is a perfect solution for treating wounds. In the past, doctors commonly recommended using hydrogen peroxide to clean wounds. But today, most medical professionals advise against it because peroxide tends to attack healthy cells as well as bacteria. This can slow down the healing process, so it's better to avoid it.

Rubbing alcohol is also not advisable to use for cleaning wounds. While it can take care of bacteria, it is almost certain to burn your skin as well. The burning effect can lead to swelling, itching, and inflammation that can make the situation even worse!

So if you have a wound that needs cleaning, keep your bottles of hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol in the cupboard! Instead, rinse the wound with cool water and wash around the area with a mild soap. Cover the wound with a bandage and a thin layer of antibiotic ointment.

How Should I Use Hydrogen Peroxide And Rubbing Alcohol?

While they aren't great for cleaning cuts, you can use hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol to clean all sorts of other things! They are two of my very favorite cleaning ingredients, and there's no shortage of ways you can use them around the house.

Rubbing alcohol makes a great solvent and evaporates quickly. That makes it a great choice for powering through greasy and sticky messes! It's also useful in situations where you don't want to leave any streaky residues behind, like when you're cleaning shiny appliances, windows, or mirrors. Should You Keep Your Flood Insurance (Even If It's Not Required)?

If you're a homeowner in a FEMA-declared flood zone, you're likely aware that your mortgage lender requires you to have flood insurance. However, if the Federal Emergency Management Agency decides to remove that classification from an area, the homeowners living there may have the option of getting rid of their flood insurance. But should they?

Although it might not be required, there are still significant benefits to keeping your flood insurance.

Why Am I No Longer in a Designated Flood Zone?

FEMA has flood maps for communities all over the country that identify an area's risk of flooding. These maps, which tell mortgage lenders whether a property will need flood insurance coverage, change depending on how an area's flood hazards change over time.

An area's flood hazards can change based on man-made developments that alter the way water flows and drains or based on environmental factors such as changing weather or wildfires, according to FloodSmart.gov, the official website of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Why Should I Keep My Insurance?

If you're trying to save money, it can make sense to want to pay only for what you need. However, even if your area is no longer considered to be a high-risk flood zone, you still may want insurance coverage. Floods are common in many areas, so you're still at risk for flood damage.

If you allow your insurance to lapse, you may have difficulty getting back the rate you paid previously. Also, keep in mind there's a 30-day waiting period before your coverage kicks in. So, if the weather forecast looks bad, and you find yourself scrambling to get insured before the storm hits, you'll likely be out of luck.

What if I Have Homeowners Insurance?

Homeowners insurance typically doesn't cover flood damage, so if you want flood protection, you're going to need to buy insurance for it.

Additionally, many homeowners incorrectly believe that if their area suffers major flooding, they'll receive aid directly from FEMA, according to a press release detailing why homeowners should buy flood insurance. The truth is that FEMA will offer grants only when the president of the United States declares a major disaster, and even then, the money you receive likely won't be enough to cover the cost of significant damage.

According to FloodSmart.gov, people in low- to moderate-risk areas can purchase a lower-cost Preferred Risk Policy starting at less than $325 per year.

What Are the Odds That I'll End Up Needing Flood Insurance?

You might never end up needing flood insurance. That's the trade-off when you purchase any kind of insurance – you may end up feeling like the money you spent could have been better put toward other items in your budget. But the alternative – that you need insurance and don't have it – can be financially ruinous.

Flooding is the most common natural disaster in the United States, and it doesn't only affect people in high-risk areas. In fact, more than 20% of flood claims are filed for properties outside of FEMA's high-risk areas.

According to FEMA, if you live in an area with low or moderate flood risk, you are five times more likely to experience a flood than a fire in your home over the next 30 years.

Even if you don't have to worry about big floods, it takes only a few inches of water to cause costly damage to a home. Just 3 inches of floodwater in your home can mean having to replace drywall, baseboards, carpets and furniture. Without flood insurance, you'll likely have to pay for these costs out of pocket.

The Bottom Line

Ultimately, whether you decide to keep your flood insurance or try to save money by opting out of it is a matter of how much risk you're comfortable with. It's possible that you don't end up regretting the decision to get rid of your coverage and are able to save some money.

However, you're risking a lot when you forgo a flood insurance policy. Floodwater can cause devastating damage to your property; flood insurance provides a safety net so that you're able to recover without wrecking your finances. The decision to go without insurance isn't one you should take lightly.

6 Gardening Tasks for January

A magnificent year of gardening lies ahead of us, but if you can't wait to get started, that's okay!

Today we might be crying 'here comes the snow' but before you know it we will be singing 'here comes the sun'! A magnificent year of gardening lies ahead of us, but if you can't wait to get started, that's okay! There are actually lots of awesome winter garden tasks that you can add to your to-do list to get you through January.

Take A Walk

Take a walk around your property with a notebook and look for ways to improve your footprint and land usage. Some examples could be recycling more, adding a compost pile, using less water. Some of these you will have to add to that ol' to-do list for warmer seasons, but some you can try now. Try implementing some of your ideas and see how it goes.

Tidy Up

If you haven't cleaned out the fall beds yet, now is a good time. If you have, there may still be more to clean. Pull out your tools and give them a solid cleaning. Then sharpen them and rub some vegetable oil on the metal to make sure they're all in ship shape and ready to go as soon as the ground thaws.

Day Dream

While you're walking the garden, and once you're back inside and warm, start dreaming of what you'll do in the spring. Will it be a beautiful flower bead or an edible bounty? Begin sketching and planning how you might rework your garden design. Head over to Pinterest or pull out those garden magazines and get the ideas flowing.

Feed The Birds

If you're struggling to get into the gardening groove while the skies are all heavy and grey, this could help. Fill up those bird feeders and attract some wild songbirds into the yard. Nothing chases away the winter blues like bird song. Sit by the window and watch them delight in their winter feast.

Think Small

While you're working on those big garden plans, think about what plants you want to start from scratch. Organize and make a list of the seeds you have and the seeds you need to purchase still. Create a timeline of when they can be started indoors and begin buying the supplies you need. It might be too early to start them now, but those days will be here soon.

Garden Indoors

Start a mini indoor herb garden in your kitchen. Choose the herbs that you most associate with summer flavors. Incorporate them into your meals in the dead of winter and continue dreaming of the gardening season to come.

OPEI Expands Product Representation, Adds Golf Cars And Light Transport Vehicles

The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) has announced that the International Light Transportation Vehicle Association (ILTVA) has transferred representation of its member products and respective ANSI standards to OPEI, effective January 1, 2019. This expands OPEI's product representation to now include golf cars and light transport vehicles.

“OPEI is a natural fit for these products as we actively represent a wide range of utility vehicles currently in the marketplace,” says Kris Kiser, President of OPEI. “As the association of record in this space, we're a leader in the development of safety standards for UTVs, and have significant experience as it relates to these vehicles with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and other regulators.”

OPEI currently represents manufacturers of utility vehicles for a wide range of end-user applications. ILTVA developed and maintained ANSI standards relating to the design and performance of golf cars and personal transport vehicles. That organization will wind down its operations, and those standards will now be part of OPEI's ongoing standards development work.

“As uses and applications of these products have expanded, it made sense for us to partner with OPEI. The association has a demonstrable history in utility vehicle safety and performance standards and representing these products before regulatory authorities, as well as a deep background in market statistics collection, and positions us well as we look toward the industry's future,” says Mark Wagner, member, OPEI Board of Directors, and President and CEO of Club Car, LLC, Ingersoll-Rand Industrial Technologies. “We're excited to work with OPEI on the representation of our products on a going-forward basis.”

John Jackson from John Jackson Neighborhood Real Estate, Lane Hornung from 8z Real Estate, and Heather Bush from Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Capital Area were excited to share their expertise.

John Jackson,

John Jackson Neighborhood Real Estate: Racing for Approachable

John takes a friendly approach to lead generation. By being both approachable and desirable, his brokerage finds much success in being able to convert leads. To make their presence known, the traditional avenues of open houses and Facebook ads are used. However, their major investment lies in nurturing client relationships rather than cold leads.

As an avid runner, John heavily supports athletic events that are not necessarily client-focused. By sponsoring local races and having the company name on running bibs, the brokerage is able to present itself to the local public in a community-oriented way. John believes that inspiration and a bit of runner's high, first- or second-hand, will inspire the public.

While it is always a challenge to define measurable market presence, being approachable, knowledgeable and desirable makes prospective clients want to engage. Sixty percent of leads are company-driven and agents drive the other 40 percent in a high-support setup. John makes it part of his responsibility to be the inside sales person. He nurtures leads and matures them before handing them off to a team member. A shared Google doc tracks hot, warm and cold statuses as well as every communication sent to all leads, regardless of how they were shaped. Agents can count on these leads, but are also incentivized to nurture their own.

8z Real Estate: Get visual

Lane believes in the power of a visual to explain his approach to lead generation, which is driven by numbers. He imagines the process as a triangle – internet, sphere and hyperlocal. The first side of the triangle is dedicated to new lead generation sourced from the internet using SEO, organic and paid traffic, Facebook campaigns for market listing ads and name recognition ads. Ads are hyperlocal, within a half-mile radius of the brokerage in most cases. The sphere, which is the foundation, is next, where sweat equity ensures measurable leads. Finally, the high-support brokerage uses SEO, Facebook market listings and a digital farming strategy in which each agent is assigned a neighborhood.

Leads are given to the client care team to improve the prospective client's chance of closing to 10 percent or better.

Heather Bush,

Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Capital Area: Relocation, relocation, relocation

Heather harnesses the power of technology and outsourcing for lead generation. Her brokerage's unique system focuses on relocation as a primary source of business. Military personnel must buy and sell houses quickly for deployment or new assignments. Additionally, members of the corporate world also need a reliable agent to help with their specific housing needs. This niche has proven quite lucrative for the brokerage.

Opt City is a referral source that does away with upfront costs and requires payment only upon closing for brokerages. Inquiries are filtered and nurtured until the lead is warm enough to be handed off to an agent. Clients are introduced with a live, warm phone transfer. Agents start with lower quality leads until their performance score indicates that they're ready to receive a higher volume and improved leads.

Another tool, Cartus, is a leader in global/logistical relocation services for military personnel and corporations. As a Better Homes and Gardens® Real Estate in-house resource, ZAP provides lead generation strategic insights. With the website and app, the client begins the homebuying process by selecting their preferences. Online activity is meticulously tracked and algorithms indicate when a transaction is imminent. Agents receive metrics and insights to boost daily and long-term projections.

Heather believes that while resources aid in lead generation, ultimately, what makes a transaction is the relationship. By getting to know clients and addressing their specific needs and lifestyle, a lifelong connection can be formed that will result in referrals upon referrals. 15 Winter Cabins That Make The Most Out Of The Snowy Season

There's something uniquely comforting and charming about spending time in a small cabin when it's freezing cold outside. Winter cabins make us feel warm and cozy plus they're almost always situated in remote regions with gorgeous views which provides the perfect environment in which to recharge our batteries, to relax and to enjoy quality time with our loved ones (or alone) before returning to our busy everyday lives. We searched far and wide and we selected our favorite winter cabins from around the world to share with you today.

Given the fact that winter cabins are often situated in remote areas or only used for shorts periods of time throughout the year, the issue of security can be a valid concern. When building the Delta Shelter, studio Olson Kundig found a great way to deal with this problem. The cabin was build on stilts and has metal shutters which allow it to become completely sealed and secured when the owner is away. In addition to that, it has a modern and cool design with lots of appealing features. The cabin is located in Mazama, US.

Due to strict architectural guidelines in this beautiful Alpine valley in Manigold, France, Studio Razavi Architecture didn't really have a lot of freedom when designing this winter cabin. Still, the team managed to make the most of the circumstances, opting for a traditional style overall and allowing the cabin to seamlessly blend in with the other local structures while maintaining its own unique character.

If there's one thing mountain cabins are famous for, that would be the views. A lot of modern cabins feature large windows which maximize these views but other less conventional design strategies are sometimes used as well. This holiday retreat near Geilo, a village in Norway is a perfect example. The region is known for its ski resorts and there's actually an open terrain unfolding right next to this cabin so the team at Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter came up with a design which separates the building into several volumes, each with a distinct orientation.

Rather than standing out, this lovely winter cabin from Lillehammer, Norway manages to blend into the landscape and to keep a low profile all while taking full advantage of its surroundings and the beautiful views they provide. The structure is designed by studio Vardehaugen and is inspired by snowbound cabins. The design blurs the boundaries between architecture and nature, bringing the inhabitants closer to their surroundings and allowing them to feel like an actual part of the mountain.

Situated in a quiet residential area north of Whistler in Canada, this A-frame cabin is surrounded by other chalets and retreats featuring similar designs, most of them dating back to the 1970s. This particular winter cabin was designed by Scott & Scott Architects and has a modern vibe inside and out and that allows it to stand out and to showcase its distinct character without actually contrasting too much with its surroundings.

The winter cabin designed by studio Delordinaire has a very special way of making its inhabitants feel immersed in nature. The cabin was built on stilts and the elevated structure actually forms an open and protected outdoor space which is a very unusual ground floor area. Out here, below the actual cabin, there's an outdoor stove and a space which allows one to enjoy the snowy views and to spend time outside while being protected from the elements. The cabin is located in Quebec, Canada.

This is actually an all-year cabin, a charming and peaceful retreat located near Ål village in Norway. Residents can enjoy hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter on the nearby tracks. The cabin was designed by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter who were careful to take advantage of the site's unique topography and views.

As with any other type of structure, the location is very important for a winter cabin and just in relation to the views but also to the topography and any other advantages the site may offer. The mountain retreat designed by Filter Arkitekter in Sirdal, Norway sits on a very steep terrain and the architects used that in their favor to embed the building into the landscape in a literal sense. It's a great way to merge nature and architecture.

Can you believe this A-frame cabin was actually built in the '60s? It has such a chic and timeless vibe and recently it's been remodeled and converted into a cozy winter retreat. It was a project completed by designers Chad and Courtney Ludeman of Postgreen Homes. The cabin is located in New Jersey, along Maurice River. It has large openings which let in natural light and inside it's organized into a double-height atrium, a loft bedroom and a basement area.

Sleeping in a cabin is definitely a nice experience but sleeping in a cabin that's up in the trees is even better. A while ago the Treehotel in northern Sweden just got a new addition designed by Snøhetta. The hotel is actually a collection of six treehouse-inspired cabins, all providing magnificent views and perfect observation points for admiring the Northern Lights. This cabin sits 10 meters above the forest floor, supported by 12 columns.

Cabana Sapte is a cozy cabin situated in the Fagaras Mountain, in Romania. It's been completely remodeled in 2017 and can sleep up to 12 people in five bedrooms. The glazed side allows panoramic views and an abundance of natural light to enter the cabin while the wooden floors and pitched roof create a warm and cozy ambiance inside.

The minimalist design and the selected palette of materials and finishes all lead to one objective: to create a cabin which is able to blend into the landscape and to communicate with nature and its immediate surrounds in a seamless and natural manner. This become possible thanks to studio CARGO Architecture. The cabin is located in the Petite-Rivière-Saint-François region of Canada.

This cabin is quite different than everything else we showed you so far. Its modern appearance makes it more suitable to call this a hut rather than a cabin. Located in Flims, Switzerland, this site used to be occupied by an old cabin and stable combo, which were taken down after being abandoned for a period of time. A new cabin was built in the same place as the old one. Its design and character preserve and charm of the original structures, featuring a timber log structure and massive concrete walls. This was a project by Selina Walder and Georg Nickisch.

Inspired by the freedom and adventure which define snowboarding as an experience in itself, this winter cabin is located in a remote region on the northern end of Vancouver Island in Canada. It was designed by studio Scott & Scott Architects and manages to almost seamlessly blend into the surroundings thanks to the grey exterior and wooden accents.

The last winter cabin that caught our eye lately was designed by Alp'Architecture Sàrl and is located in Bagnes, Switzerland. Originally this used to be a small barn which was extended into a residence by annexing a series of new volumes at the back of the building. It was all done with minimal impact on the overall appearance and structure of the cabin or its facades.

While you can experiment with color in the master bathroom, it's best to adhere to a neutral or monochrome palette in the guest bath. Play with textures and shapes and incorporate a statement piece but try to appeal to everyone's taste.

2. LUXURY TOUCHES

You're not running a hotel, but it's still nice to add luxe extras for your guests to enjoy during their stay. They'll probably bring basic toiletries but put out a basket of high-end pampering products as well as supplying essentials they may have forgotten. Have a plush robe on hand for each person in addition to fluffy towels in different sizes, remembering to hang hooks or rails for them to dry on. Candles and diffusers give a welcoming feel and show your guests that you've taken the time to make them feel special.

3. TAKE TIME TO SET UP

While it's important to show visitors that everything is at hand, things should be displayed with thought and presented meticulously. Open shelving is the best solution as people can find what they need without rooting around. When displaying items, sort them into groups and then vary their size, to give an ordered yet interesting look. Hairdryers and toilet paper can go in a little vanity included in your customized bathroom design storage.

4. LEAVE SPACE

Remember to leave some space free when planning your remodel. Guests will appreciate having somewhere to put their own essentials. Resist the urge to accessorize too much. Guests might have to move a bowl of potpourri to clear space for their medications and essential toiletries! Also, remember that this is not a room to store your extra things. It should be a dedicated room for guests, at least while they are staying with you.

5. PRACTICALITIES

Think about who will be coming and for how long. Bathroom rugs are a good idea to prevent elderly people slipping on a tiled floor. If your guests are long-term visitors (more than a few days) then include a laundry basket for them to use. Don't forget extra touches like plungers, air neutralizers and extra toilet paper, to avoid potential embarrassment. This also applies to your frequently used powder room.

The new Solid Brass landscape lighting collection from Vista Professional Outdoor Lighting is designed to provide the aesthetic appeal of brass with durability that spun brass fixtures cannot match. The collection consists of six models - four Up & Accent lights and two path lights - all of which feature thick-wall, die-cut brass construction finished with a proprietary Olde Brass process.

“Many outdoor lighting manufacturers offer fixtures made with spun brass,” said Cruz Pérez, vice president of sales and marketing for Vista Professional Outdoor Lighting. “However, spun brass simply cannot compete with solid brass when it comes to overall appearance and durability. It's easy to tell the difference between the two types of brass by simply holding the fixtures in your hands. Our new Solid Brass Collection is heavier and stronger, built to rigorous specifications for lasting customer satisfaction.”

The 2216, 5006 and 5014i Up & Accent models feature tempered, shock-and-heat-resistant soda-lime glass lenses as well as tool-free, rotatable shrouds for easy fixture entry and aiming by hand. The 5105 Up & Accent has a bordered, high-impact, tempered lens with a high-performance anodized aluminum reflector.

All four Up & Accent models have solid-brass, adjustable knuckles with half-inch NPS and silicone o-ring gaskets for a reliable seal. The 2216 and 5006 include Vista's high-performance LED 4.5W or 5.5W MR-16 lamp in 25°, 36° and 60° spreads. The 5014i model features integrated, advanced chip-on-board (COB) LED technology available in 1.5W, 2.5W and 3.5W with outputs up to 400 delivered lumens available in 25°, 36° and 60° spreads. The 5105 also features the same COB LED technology, but in 2W, 3W and 4W options, all with outputs up to 400 delivered lumens.

The collection's 2265 and 2267 path lights have heavy-gauge brass stems with half-inch NPS and textured polycarbonate optic lenses specifically designed for even light distribution. Both models also include Vista's new high-performance T3 COB LED lamp running at 2.5W with a powerful 193-lumen output. A lamp life of 30,000 hours reduces maintenance annual re-lamping and lamp replacement costs.

3 Paper Organization Systems for 2019

The following is a guest post about 3 paper organization systems for 2019 from regular contributor, Kristin at The Gold Project.

Happy 2019! Two years ago, I shared a post about my Top 3 Organization Systems for 2017. Guess what? They are still my top 3 organization systems for 2019. So, I am definitely not going to talk about them again in today's post. Make sure you check that post for all of the details about my monthly bill planner, receipt organization, and emergency binder.

In today's post, I am adding three more organization systems that I have implemented and that have stood the test of time. Sometimes, we can try an organization system and it just doesn't work. But, those times when we find the right one, you just know it. I hope you find these three paper organization systems helpful and can use them in your household.

Incoming Paper Organization

I tested out several different systems for papers until I purchased the Kvissle wall magazine rack from Ikea. It was a total game changer for me.

It has five different sections to organize your paperwork. I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a set of file folders for under $2.00 and I labeled each one with the category I needed. The five sections include:

To File – Anything that needs to be placed in a home binder

Receipts – Any receipts that that need to be placed in my receipt accordion file

Coupons – Current coupons

Nathan/Kristin – Anything for me or my husband that needs to be placed in our personal binders

Kate/Derrick – Anything for my two kids that need to be placed in their school binders

I have used this incoming mail system for five years and it has worked perfectly. I was able to eliminate all of the paper piles that once accumulated in my office (see Laura's similar system below).

Taxes Binder

Tax time is right around the corner, which means it is time to get those documents ready to turn in to the IRS. For me, it is pretty simple because I have created a dated Taxes Binder where everything from previous tax seasons gets stored.

When I put this binder together, I knew it was going to work. I keep 8 years of tax documents in this one binder. When the new tax season arrives and I have new papers to add to the binder, I will shred the oldest forms. Then, I will add a new section with the current year on the tab.

I highly recommend getting a tax system together for your household. Even if the binder system does not work, try something else. It will save you so much time and frustration during tax season.

Greeting Card Organization

This may not be the first thing that pops into your head when you think of top paper organization systems, but it is one that I created several years ago and has never been changed.

When I say greeting cards, I am talking about new greeting cards that have never been given to a recipient. I will admit, I am a person who almost refuses to purchase a greeting card in a store. Why? Because I feel they cost way too much, unless we are talking about some dollar stores. Some of the detailed cards cost over $5.00 for a single card. You can get a meal at some restaurants for that price. And, let's be honest, a lot of greeting cards are not kept by the recipient.

Instead, I like to purchase bulk cards from places like Amazon. You can get beautiful cards for a fraction of the price. Then, I sort and store them until I need them.

For the organization, I purchased two of the greeting card cases from The Container Store. I labeled the tabs as follows:
