CARP
“Applying CARP can help you put together an interface so that it is reasonably attractive.”
Example of how CARP is applied in Google Maps:
Contrast - The contrast between primary action vs. secondary action.
Tumblr media
Alignment - All buttons are right aligned within map.
Tumblr media
Repetition - The style applied to categories is repeated throughout. (Red background, white icon, grey label)
Tumblr media

All too often we tend to latch on to a particular solution and begin the process of incrementally improving it before we've explored the possibility space. But if you freeze and idea too quickly, you fall in love with it. If you refine it too quickly, you become attached to it and it becomes hard to keep exploring, to keep looking for better.

Google has the functionality of a complicated Swiss Army knife, but the home page is our way of approaching it closed. It's simple, it's elegant, you can slip it in your pocket, but it's got the great doodad when you need it. A lot of our competitors are like a Swiss Army knife open -- and that can be intimidating and occasionally harmful.
