So I was just reading through this post about Fronting by Jun-O-Lantern  and I just wanted to make a quick post talking about Seventeen and how pro they are.

It’s hard to remember sometimes because they’re called “rookies” and they’re new to appearing on shows, but Seventeen has been preparing for this for years. It’s not like usual groups, who will train for a few years, get placed in a group and debut almost immediately. For the most part, Seventeen trained for a few years, got placed in a group, and then had to wait even longer for their debut. And while they seem fresh-faced and bright eyed and little because their image isn’t currently an intense one. It’s a school boy image. But in reality, they’ve really worked hard for this already. They’ve been promised debut for years and been constantly denied, having to watch friends debut and other groups get what they wanted. After all that preparation, they debut as a “new” group.

But what’s different from other new groups is that in situations like this, where a mic goes dead or Mingyu drops his mic on stage, it’s handled super professionally. Hoshi didn’t even bat an eye, but instead swaggered forward and smoothly switched mics with Vernon, and when the music started skipping, he acted like nothing was wrong and urged the crowd to scream and cheer with him. When Mingyu dropped his mic, he grabbed it in an instant and no one else dove for it or broke stage presence, but at the same time Jeonghan, Coups, and Jun all subtly made sure the situation was in hand. Especially impressive because Jeonghan was the center of attention, and Mingyu was standing right next to him. Instead of acting flustered, Jeonghan subtly assessed the issue, and then turned it into a joke to incorporate it into a part of the choreography by flicking Mingyu’s forehead. Things like that happen more often than it seems. The sound in the back will be off or a mic won’t work in a performance, but they deal with it so well that you never tell. They don’t call attention to it, and if it’s obvious then it gets handled very easily.

Even in other things, you see this. Whenever Jun makes a jump and misses his landing, he immediately knows how to recover with a smooth dance move instead of just lying there. Seungkwan knows how to swiftly change the subject away from an uncomfortable question. Even the standard “what kind of girl do you want to date” is met with the “our fans of course” response that easily avoids something being misunderstood or scandal inducing. The boys are young, and while they’re new to the industry, they have the ability to handle “situations” like pros and continue with the show. And that’s something that can benefit them in anything they do in the future, from interviews to concerts to reality shows. And that’s really something I find extraordinary and impressive about Seventeen.
