I keep coming back to how much Taylor did not need to release this record and how much courage it shows that she did. These lyrics touch on it:

The scandal was contained

The bullet had just grazed

Because things ended with MH and people generally stopped talking about it and she kept just winning. The general public saw her as at the top of her game and America’s Sweetheart dating the football star. The Brads, Dads, and Chads had something to say but she actually seemed to have more defenders than ever before. Like this is the most recent image the general public has of her

And she chose to put out this one.

She wasn’t on trial anymore, the scandal was contained, so she didn’t need to put in a plea, but she does actually want people to know and understand her

I want to snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me

She’s trusting us with her feelings when she absolutely didn’t have to and we should appreciate it for the gift it is

do you agree with the criticism that the album is inconsistent and needs to be edited down? at first I didn't think so but the more I listen the more it feels like some of the songs feel unfinished and could have been left off. I also think the length hurts the album more than it helps it

i do and i don't. i think the main tracklist is virtually flawless and the anthology is much more inconsistent. there are songs i love and songs i don't necessarily need. i also think these things were intentional creative choices - the length, the songs feeling more raw, etc. were things she did on purpose that she knew she'd get criticized for, rather than errors in judgment (if you can call it that). to taylor, this is a story that had to be told, in all its turmoil and all its glory. and it had to be told in full, hence why we got all 31 songs. i also think three other things re: the length:

a lot of people have had this criticism, but there is literally zero universality as to what songs should be cut. the bottom tier is different on every ranking i've seen, and even critics have vastly different takes. this makes me think that it's more personal preference than actual bad songs.

the length imo is designed to challenge you. this album is fun, but it isn't designed to be easy listening. most people aren't going to sit down and take it in in one sitting, and that is fine and also intentional. some people may not like that! but i do think it's what she was going for - it's a feature, not a bug.

there is virtually zero redundancy. 31 songs is a lot, but no two of them are the same. cutting any would remove a part of the story. that is a talent in and of itself.

This album is about how two men broke her heart just months apart and how she was quite literally going through a mental breakdown while trying to put on a front while performing for millions of people on a world tour but you wouldn’t know that because you’re either so caught up in trying to figure out who each song is about or your so caught up in your hate for her that you’d rather make fun of her in her most vulnerable, raw, and honest state just to make yourself feel better

Truly, like since when is having a big heart and being able to have lots of emotions a bad thing? It’s such a wonderful thing and also it’s STRONG, to not lose hope and still give your all to a relationship. Because if you’re not giving your all then you’re not giving it a fair shot

Yeah I really don’t care. If someone made my kid (in theory) feel that bad I’d feel the exact same way.

I... haven't seen anyone acknowledge that it's actually pretty messed up to wish death upon a woman who's a mother (no matter what she's done to you) and putting that on blast in a song and also to bring her child into the mix/drama. Idk that song is the only one that is really Not It for me

She’s talking about an intense reaction her mother had to a massive targeted harassment that broke her. I don’t have a single problem with anything in the song.
