i was gonna go to bed at a reasonable hour but then people on theater twitter started posting videos from jesus christ superstar and omg... you don't notice it when she's always hanging out with ariana grande, but when you see cynthia erivo surrounded by regular people she really is just 3 apples tall 🥺

briefly touched on this on instagram a while ago but I wanted to expand more. I know be more chill gets dogpiled for being the weird cringey teenager musical that every other 13 year old theater kid gets obsessed with, and I also know that from an objective standpoint it's not the greatest musical there is. that being said, I genuinely think that be more chill is one of the most necessary modern musicals ever written. call me crazy idc! you cannot change my mind! it was never destined for critical success-- they spent their prime running getting mixed reviews and were not exactly raking in awards. but this story from joe iconis just made me start thinking about the beauty of the show, and how it has been and continues to be discovered by the people who need it. and I honestly think that's so beautiful-- for ten years, this show has been helping the loser geek whatever teenagers all over the world. kids everywhere have been feeling a little less alone and a little more hopeful because this show exists! be more chill was not a show written with the intent of selling out broadway theaters for decades. it wasn't written to please the critics. it was written for the people who needed it, and seeing the lasting impact this weird little musical has had for ten years is the coolest thing ever to me.

awards are impressive and worth celebrating, don't get me wrong. but at the end of the day, a tony is just a fancy fidget spinner. the real reward is the impact of the arts and that is something that no trophy can replace

If you like Be More Chill, you need to watch Love In Hate Nation and Black Suits. They are both fantastic. They are super good. They have a lot of potential to get more popular!

Black Suits is really relatable, especially with mental health, and Love In Hate Nation is a wlw story with a canon trans character!! They deserve more attention :)
