The Professor’s Ordeal (1)

Professor Herbert couldn’t move an inch. He-could-not-move-an-inch. He had tried, though. There was still a lot of energy in the seventy-two-year-old man. But no matter how much he wriggled, he couldn’t move. He was laying flat on his back, still wearing his tweed suit and patent leather shoes, his arms stuck on his sides by those leather bands that held him. Only his head, that rested on some kind of leather-covered wedge, was raised at an angle and he could see his torso and the tip of his shoes. 

There he laid, on some sort of table, in the middle of a smallish but well-lit room with knotty-pine walls. There was no window, only a door at the end of the room, that he could see a few meters beyond his feet. Thank heaven, whoever had done this to him had left him his glasses. Without those, he couldn’t have seen past the tip of his nose.

Professor Herbert felt a sweat bead sliding down his forehead, then down his nose, hanging there for a while before falling on his curly white beard. Struggling against his bonds had made him hot. Where was he? Who had done this to him? All he could remember was walking to his car, on the university’s dark parking lot, then being grabbed from behind, a foul-smelling rag being pressed against his face and then… nothing.

And then he had woken up, in this strange room, bound hand and foot. It suddenly dawned on him - he had been kidnapped! That foul smell must have been chloroform or something and had put him to sleep. But why? Why kidnap a semi-retired English Lit professor?

Suddenly, he heard the sound of steps and then, he saw the door open.
