Some thoughts on Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries!
[⚠️Spoilers ahead! Am about halfway through the book but just so you know. Skip/don't read if you want to avoid them]
I just absolutely LOVE that Emily, a mortal human, knoes and understands the Folk so well (by saying they cannot be understood, it feels like she really does, in fact, understand them very well) but ultimately, she is very bad when it comes to people, other mortal humans like her
Meanwhile Bambleby, a Folk prince, knows and understands said mortal humans very well, yet he can't figure out the Folk-related thingys (finding a door back to his realm/place/world, whatever you wanna call it)
And it makes so much sense for their characters.
Emily studies the Folk so deeply because she's intrested in them as a scientist. She wants to understand them and learn more about them to further her own knowledge and broaden the scope of material there currently is on them. It's a passion of hers, an intrest that runs so deep and makes up a huge part of her life and who she is.
Bambleby studies humans so intently because he had to learn to live amongst them and blend in. He learned of the ins and outs of their graces and how to steer the conversations and topics the way he wanted to, to be in control and be able to keep his facade up and steer away any suspicions. He studied them so well because he had to learn how to live like them, live as one of them and make them think he is one of them.
I think it's a v neat parallel between them that makes so much sense for their characters
the folk of the air is JUST the right amount of enemies to lovers. like it's an actual enemies to lovers for one, not a "oh damn he's nice but I kinda don't like him" to "he's so man" its progression goes from "I hate him with every fibre of my being" to "I will do anything for this person" and that's just how we like it
The thing I think I like most about Jude and Cardan is the fact that they are embarrassing. They are embarrassed. They are in love and it is the most embarrassing thing in the world to them. Liking someone so much you have to marry them!!! Ordinarily you couldn’t catch them DEAD like that. This is why the only way Cardan can propose is to couch it entirely in political/bargaining terms— unfortunately this is also why Jude 100% believes “Oh I’ve been tricked! This is mortifying, my feelings have been used against me. What did I expect. I should have known. That’ll teach me to believe in LOVE” meanwhile Cardan is having a breakdown in the High King’s en-suite bathroom claw foot tub trying desperately to get sober so maybe she’ll take him back while his mother stands in the corner making a mildly disgusted facial expression at the amount of bodily fluids being emitted.
Holly will write us a jurdan story if she reaches her $1M goal!!! (the last goal she needs to meet) let’s keep it rolling!! KEEP SUPPORTING HER KICKSTARTER!! RESHAREE!!
