draft 2 - the creation
The designer Anna Lupean is one I aspire to. She is the current senior designer at the Los Angeles Lakers and has previously worked in other areas of the sporting industry such as Nike, Adidas, ESPN and the Portland Trail Blazers. Lupean describes her work with the Los Angeles Lakers as “A heavy mixture of typography and editorial layout to help us stand out in the social feed” (Lupean, 2022). I aspire to Anna’s work because of how it stands out in the sports media industry, a lot of sports media is similar and repetitive, this is a fresh new take that gives a more sophisticated feeling to the media as seen in Figure 1. This is the type of work I draw inspiration from for my own sports media design, I am currently designing for me water polo club and want to shift their current system to this typographic and editorial style.
Being a female athlete, not only is sport a huge part of my life, but the topic of women’s sport is of upmost importance to me. This is a topic that is close to my heart, being able to create media that not only highlights sport, but also the hardworking females in the industry is one of my ultimate goals. The FIFA World cup highlighted how truly talented female athletes are, this event was life changing for all female athletes around the world. Due to this personal connection to this topic, I was drawn to the designs produced for the FIFA World Cup. The one that stood out to me most was the CommBank Matilda’s “Til it’s done” campaign. Designed by Ogilvy in collaboration with Football Australia Marketing and GroupM. Figure 2 shows the poster I felt was most impactful in this campaign. This poster evokes deep feelings within me and represents the constant battles you must overcome as female athletes, but also inspires the viewer as it shows all the hurdles this group of women have overcome. It is an accreditation to all their success, the history they have made and the future they are shaping for all young female athletes. I get goosebumps and feel emotional seeing and reading this poster as it perfectly encapsulates what it is to be a female athlete. The creative work “embodies the team’s never say die attitude, the list has evolved and expanded in tribute to their relentless grit” (Football Australia Media, 2023). The poster design is clean and simple which is what makes it so powerful, although this team did not get the result they were hoping for, you cannot read this without an overwhelming sense of pride for how far this team has come, and the bright future they have ahead of them. This work by Ogilvy is a truly inspiring campaign.

Draft 1 for the creation:
Sports design is a common occurrence in my work. Currently I do freelance work for my water polo club to put on their social media. Figure 2 – Sea Wolf Media, shows examples of the work I have created. A difficulty I have faced with this is applying a system that resembles the previous media, whilst allowing future media to be created with a robust design system. Majority of this work is pictorial based to showcase the athletes and the sport, these images are from the club’s photographers, the photos are often taken with varying light exposure, to make the images look cohesive I lower the saturation and lightness, this makes the images darker which complements the white text. The club colours are black and white, by having dark images and white text it plays into the club’s brand identity. This high contrast between the image and text also helps to create the atmosphere of competitive sport. Whilst this design system I have been using is clean and simple, I want to create something more for this club. I draw inspiration from The LA Lakers.

example of how my type layout will look under the page. although this does not utilise the space well, these aren't the words ill be using exactly but it is an idea for how to lay them out. Could possibly add another row to the images and increase the image sizes

Potential layout: have a very structured grid layout to contrast the hand drawn sketches of the images. Then will have the text below, again in a very structured layout and columns to align with the image columns

drawings of my images so far. I want to have this hand drawn style. I have always loved drawing, but since entering this degree I have noticed I haven't been using it as much and I have been using mainly digital tools. I wanted to bring back this hand drawn style as it relates to what got me here in the first place. In school I was good at drawing which led me to take art, from there I was introduced to design, that design class is what inspired me to take this course.
I have drawn these using my iPad and procreate, tracing the images but trying not to be too exact with it.

As a designer/creative, you could also explore creative, visual and non-logical methods to create new typologies, if consistent with your strategy. E.g., do you notice half the elements are pink in colour or hand-crafted? Is this interesting, helpful, or offer opportunities or limitations worth considering?
A lot of objects have personal meaning that others would not see from the outside. Object that I use like beauty products of clothing items because those make me feel certain ways.
What do your current categories tell you about the elements contained in them?
Everything has meanings, a lot of my object are directly what I use to help create my work. They are things that affect me and the way I feel which aids to how I feel when creating and how to get myself into a space that allows me to create without feelings stressed. It reminds me of how I want to hold myself and the values I want presented in my work.
What underpins your categorisations? Are the elements grouped by a key characteristic, material or medium – or something else? e.g. typography, fluid type, poster design, etc?
Categorised by what the items are or how they make me feel / the thoughts they provoke.
Are some of your categories defined by author/maker, origin, use or idea? Or something else?
Some of my categories are defined by if I see it as art, objects that I own, or things that I wear, or products that I use.
What do you these categories tell you about your selection methods, influences and biases?
These tell me that I do see the categories for what they are as surface level. For example, I would not categorise the print and the candle together as in my mind those do not belong together.
What might these categories tell you about you as an individual, and your design practice?
These tell me that I am a person that thinks and feels very deeply. Almost all of my object has deeper meanings because of the memories or values that hold, or the way they make me feel.
When seen together, what story do these elements and their categorisation tell an audience?
The audience may be confused seeing all these objects as it may seem random, I find it hard to connect some of them. But if they read the description, they will find that all the objects have significance and influence myself and my work in some way. The categories are based on how I feel when using or around these things.
Does your re-examination of typologies and approaches to classification suggest changes? Do all the elements fit in one category? Should they? Is this coherent or is  it limiting?
No, things like my togs and the candle cannot be connected. But a lot of them can be linked to ways of healing me or making me feel relaxed.
Does a category need be added? Or removed?
Maybe have other categories that and link elements from other ones to show the cross sections.
Would a category operate more effectively with more, less or different elements?
My categories are already quite small, I have ways to cross categorise them,
Should some elements be reclassified?
If I reduced categories, then they can change categories and be reclassified.
Are some elements a better fit for the category than the one you’ve selected? Or does the categorisation need adapting to foreground the unique importance of the element?
My categories could use some refining and adapting
Are there blind spots in your selection, editing or approach?
Georgia found that a lot of my objects can be seen as healing or provoking a feeling
Is the graphic system coherent? Overall, would it make sense to someone with no knowledge of you, your design work and chosen elements?
Now I am not using a specific system as I am still collating all my items. Right know I have a photo collage of the items, it is very messy, the colours are not cohesive.
Is it effective?
No, this is just a way for me to see my work, this is not how I intend to present my work
Is it efficient?
No, again this is just thrown on a page so I can see it visually.
Is it clear, concise and compelling?
As above
Is it the most appropriate design solution for your selected elements, and categories or classifications systems? What other graphic systems could you research and experiment with?
No, I want to draw my object to give them all the same treatment. Just as photos they do not look cohesive or thought out. I will either draw all the objects by hand or I will apply an image treatment to them
Does it speak to your preferences and strengths as a designer?
I am trying to push myself out of my comfort zone as a designer which is why I want to draw the materials. I was strong at sketching in high school but have drifted away from that in recent years
Does it take a unique approach to the assignment reflective of you as an individual?
Yes, drawing in my style would be unique and help to show all the objects rather than individuals that aren’t related. I want to have a clean and structured typeface to contrast the sketches. I also have the tendency to be a perfectionist so by having imperfect drawings this will be fun to work with and try place into a grid system and give it some sort of structure.
How does it create appropriate connections with relevant creative communities?
It creates connections with my sporting community, design community

50 words for objects so far...
Amberjack Candle – White Sandalwood
I light a this candle to help me reset and focus on the task at hand. I am the type of person that will often overthink and get stressed so this is very important to me when it comes to deadlines and high stress periods. Allowing me to refocus and think clearly.
Instax Polaroid Camera
Taking photos is something I enjoy a lot, being able to capture memories. I especially value this over my phone camera as it feels more authentic. There is no editing or taking hundreds of photos to get the perfect one. I have a wall of my polaroid photos of friends and family and looking at these brings me a lot of joy.
Cocktails
I enjoy making and having cocktails with friends and family, not only for the way it connects me with people, but also I see cocktails as a metaphor, the mixing of multiple elements to create something intricate with many layers of flavor, like the many layers and experiences that shape people.
NZ togs
We have always been told to wear our New Zealand with pride and honor. This always reminds me that I want to be proud of the work I present, not only in my sport but also in my creative work. My togs represent the hours of hard work I have put in, like how my creative work represents my hours of practice.
Matarangi map
Matarangi is the most important place to me, this is where my childhood is. Going there reminds me of my roots and values that I want to carry out through every aspect of my life. I look back to myself as a little girl and am reminded of all the things I have achieved.
Water Print
This artwork is at my work. I feel a connection to this work, I think this is because the water is a huge part of my life. I grew up always being in the ocean and I play water sport to a high level. Water is connected to many important things in my life, because of this I value water and the ocean a lot.
Book – Everything I know about love.
The design of this cover represents the content of the book well, about young women navigating their late teens and twenties and the challenges they face. The crossing out of certain words represents all the things we thing our young years are about when the root of all things is love.
Plates
This set of plates are all different patterns but all part of a set, some are more rough and hand drawn, others are clean and sharp patterns that are very precise. The opposing styles whilst being a part of the same set gives it a lot of personality, the feeling of playfulness, joy and fun.
these are just thoughts jotted down, not my final words. I will refine and make them concise.
