nate: how about paintball and a “sleepover”?
nate: yes, turtles. god you sound like sebastian with the responsibility thing.
nate: EITHER WAY, can you take the turtles to the vet?
dean: paintball sounds excellent!
dean: and don’t put sleepover like that. makes it seem sexual.
dean: i mean, yeah? when?
dean: do turtles even go to the vet?

kat: it's always better to try again.
kat: sick? you sound like you're in the 80s.
dean: try again, i will. i suppose.
dean: what's wrong with sounding like that? the 80s seemed really cool.

“sure, everyone takes the mick out of their friends. do it all the time with mari and newt. never mean though, and i think a lot of people don’t see the when the line is crossed. but i get it, i try to ignore it all because people are bound to criticise, especially on my course… but you can’t help but compare yourself sometimes. and care what everyone thinks. i’m still learning to get over that.”
“i think a lot of people don’t see when the line is crossed because the line is hard to see in general. what’s your course? i mean, i plan on becoming an author of some sorts, so criticism is going to be a big part of my life as well.” dean nodded at her point about comparisons, “it’s so hard not to! i don’t know if it’s actually something people ever get over.”

nate: yeah, super weird.
nate: maybe we should have more kappa bonding time.
nate: maybe a few icebreakers. consider this a pitch.
nate: no, not writing help though. i need help with the turtles.
dean: this is me vetoing the idea of icebreakers. those things are ridiculously annoying.
dean: kappa bonding sounds good though. maybe like a fishing trip. camping. something.
dean: turtles?
dean: nate....did you bring pets into the kappa house? not that there is a rule against that but damn NO ONE IS THAT RESPONSIBLE HERE

nate: hey, can i ask you for a favor?
nate: i really need some help.

he heaved a deep sigh, a rueful grin pulling at his lips at the mention of one mama mendoza. the thing was - well, he knew what ariela’s mother was like. he knew how she’d react; hell, she made his own mamá seem like a tame, liberal tree-hugging progressive in comparison. “did she like you?” sebastian asked kindly, dark eyes bright. “listen - ” how was he supposed to explain this when he didn’t understand it himself? “ - ari’s gonna have to hide no matter what.” that’s what happened when you came from a catholic family, and he knew that all too well. “but you have to make sure you’re doing alright, too.”
“oh, she adored me. i definitely think i got the parent seal of approval; from her dad too. and her little brothers seemed to like me. so i think i did very, very well.” dean smiled slightly, “and it’s not that i’m not doing alright. ari’s quickly becoming one of my very best friends.” he paused for a moment, “as for hiding, sure, i know to some degree she’ll have to hide, but shouldn’t she be a little open too.” he gave sebastian a look, “how much do you currently know about her relationships?”

kat: you sound bitter.
kat: tenth grade was a long time ago, dude. let it go and try again.
kat: a map? nah, i'd rather draw the creatures.
dean: don't tell me what to feel katherine
dean: although --- i suppose i could take another shot.
dean: wanna brainstorm ideas? i'm afraid we're going to come up with something that's already been done.
dean: i'd come up with some sick descriptions for you to pull inspiration from for some cool designs for creatures.

“definitely.” if there was one thing she enjoyed more than dance, it was showing off to someone else and helping them out too. “people are always going to laugh at things other people do, but i think they’re usually just too nervous to admit they’d like to try themselves. it’s a much more boring way to live your life. making fun of others. more fun to do what you want.”
“i, personally. don’t make fun of people. or at least, i hope i don’t. sure, i tease, but it’s only people i know well for the most part. i make it clear i make no harm. because --- honestly --- i’ve lived my whole life hyper aware of what other people thought; so concerned about it. i like to think that i’m growing out of that though. you know what i mean?”

“sorry, man. that sucks.” an apologetic expression pulled across his dark features; his shoulders coming up in a shrug. “but they say bird shit’s lucky, so you never know.” blowing out a long sigh, sebastian walked into the room and shut the door firmly behind himself, easing himself into a chair. ari was like a kid sister to him, but if anyone was an expert on girl problems, it was him. ( mostly because all he had lately was problems. ) “how’s everything going with you guys?”
“huh. wonder what i’m going to get lucky on then.” with the door securely shut and being aware that almost all of the guys were at night classes, he felt free to speak with sebastian about everything on his mind. “we’re good. we really are. i met her mother. playing the role perfectly. i just---” a sigh, “--- i wonder if we’re doing the right thing here. maybe i’m just letting kasey get to my head, but should i be helping her hide?”

kat: you any good at writing for children?
kat: because if you are, i'm thinking we can collaborate.
kat: you write, i illustrate; we try to get published.
dean: ask my tenth grade creative writing teacher
dean: they said my themes are too "mature" and "dark"
dean: so how about high fantasy? you can draw the map of the world.

“um, no?” eden responded. they wondered why he even cared. was he worried they were moving onto his sister? it’s not like they would treat her badly. it’s not like it was ever going to happen, truthfully. kasey wouldn’t be interested. “why? you wanna date me, yorkes?”
dean rolled his eyes, “no, but i think you may want to date my sister; if you’re not already dating her. i know you said “no,” but you may be hiding that bit of information from me. and, well, as her brother, it’s my duty to see if she’s getting involved with someone worthy and good or not.”

of course his son felt the need to give him his usual wisdom. and since greg had been dealing with this for years, he gave dean his usual reaction and somewhat closed his eyes, taking a deep breathe to think about what he was going to say. “dean, now isn’t the time.” he shook his head a bit as he looked at dean, somewhat scolding himself in his head because he should’ve known dean was going to say something smart. “now can you help me?”
dean couldn’t help but to laugh at the expression on his dad’s face. he clapped him on the back, “sorry, i can’t help but to rib you. yeah, i can help.” dean took a close look at the stain. it looked rather dry except for the obvious tomato stain. “this might be silly, but i think you should try running it under water. we could use a hand dryer to make sure you don’t have a watermark if that gets it out.”

he’d just finished up his classes for the day, finally come home to a near-empty kappa house and an almost ( almost! ) clean kitchen. it was late, but a lot of them had taken on late classes so they could sleep their hangovers off until noon ( sebastian would know; he’d done it a thousand times in his sophomore year ), but he’d just bounded up the stairs when he heard the telltale voice of celine dion coming from down the hall. “question is, why are you listening to celine dion in the dark at all?” he began, leaning heavily against the doorframe; an easy smile on his face. dean wasn’t a kid by any means, but that didn’t mean sebastian didn’t worry about him anyway. “something on your mind or is it just one of those days?”
his voice came out muffled because of the pillow over his face, “my professor ripped my short story apart, and a bird shit on me today, so i guess you could say it was just one of those days.” he finally took the pillow off his head and positioned himself on his bed so he was looking right at sebastian. “and i guess i’m just thinking about ari.”

dean always had a habit of playing his music too loud. he couldn’t count on one hand how many times kasey had shouted over the bumping bass and melodic voices of britney, christina, beyonce --- the list could go on really --- to tell him to turn it down. it had never been a problem in the kappa house, though,; most of the boys super rowdy anyway; as long as no one was trying to sleep. he didn’t even think his music was too loud when he sensed that he was no longer in the room alone. he groaned when the light was switched on and he covered his head with a pillow, “ please, let me listen to celine dion in the dark in peace.”
