His ex-girlfriends demurely say that he calls, sends flowers, stays in touch. The marriage speculation, of course, never ends. A couple of years ago it was Daryl Hannah. Lately it has been Calvin Klein spokeswoman Carolyn Bessette, seen wrapped in his suntanned arms at a recent Hamptons party. "I hear he's pretty serious this time," said a former girlfriend, though she added, "you knew when you went out with him that he was dating two or three other wom

JFK Jr. holds hands with Daryl Hannah John F. Kennedy Jr. made a splash escorting Daryl Hannah to a 30th birthday bash for his cousin, Tim Shriver, at Lola's in New York Tuesday. For all you John-John fanatics, Kennedy (blue trousers, white shirt and red suspenders) had fried chicken, and Daryl (blue jeans and shirt) settled for chicken curry. And there was a lot of hand-holding going on.

The bad news: Daryl Hannah and Jackson Browne, her boyfriend since forever, have split. The good news: Daryl just bought a New York apartment and that John F. Kennedy Jr. went with Daryl to look over her new place before she bought it! Daryl and handsome John have been linked romantically before, evoking denials from all points of the compass. So maybe Daryl just took her dear friend with her when she went apartment shopping.

Yes, that was John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy on Francis Avenue (aka the "Smart Street") in Cambridge Monday night. They were headed for the home of Harvard's Skip Gates and his wife, Sharon Adams. Gates and JFK have chatted each other up at so many media, political and culture-vulture events that the ever-gregarious head of Harvard's Afro-American Studies department decided to invite the George magazine publisher to a little get-together among friends -- including, in this case, sociologists William Julius Wilson and Orlando Patterson; law school professor Randy Kennedy and his wife, Yvedt Matory, of the Harvard Medical School; Divinity School prof Evelyn Brooks Higginbothan; Harvard chaplain Peter Gomes; and UCLA prof Lawrence Bobo. We're told the guests of honor were lively and warm.

The buzz was rampant yesterday that John F. Kennedy Jr. would be joining a few friends for lunch at Mr. Dooley's Tavern on Broad Street. Tavern manager Michael Sherlock said he was told by JFK buddy Bill Noonan to reserve a table for five for the party that would include the world's one-time sexiest man. Sherlock promptly informed his press person, who in turn alerted the media, which jammed expectantly into the downtown pub. Noonan and friends did show but JFK didn't -- something about being stranded at LaGuardia airport in New York. Yeah, sure. Sounds more like St. Patrick's tomfoolery

John F. Kennedy Jr. and Daryl Hannah, who make Howard Hughes and Greta Garbo seem like table-hoppers, slipped aboard the 12:10 flight from West Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard to Newark yesterday amid rumors and counter-rumors of their supposed nuptials. The buzz around East Hampton, Long Island, while down to a whisper, is that Kennedy and Hannah will exchange vows on Saturday. But if so, where? Yesterday Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis drove Hannah to the airport in a Chevy van, where they met up with JFK Jr., who had ridden up earlier on his flashy 10-speed. "They were very lovey, smoochy," said one who was there. "I know love. This was it." The circumstantial evidence pointing to a wedding: Kennedy and Hannah just returned from a trip abroad. John's aunt, Lee Radziwill, owns an oceanfront home perfect for a late-summer wedding. The rumor is that they picked up a California marriage license in July. The reality: The only people who do know aren't saying. Which hasn't stopped everybody else in East Hampton from talking. "It's big news -- if it's true," said Jerry Della Femina, whose restaurant is one of the local hot spots. "This is a town that is almost oblivious to celebrities. But when JFK Jr. shows up, heads really turn." Village Administrator Larry Cantwell said his office would usually know if a major event like a Kennedy wedding were scheduled. "The only word we've heard is from the media," he said

Hunkster John F. Kennedy Jr. will moderate a program honoring his father's commitment to civil rights Monday at 5:30 in the ARCO Forum of Public Affairs at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The room seats 600 but there will be a close circuit hook-up for those wanting a glimpse of the "sexiest man alive." . . .

The University of Texas students knew they were going to have a guest in class that day in 1996. They just didn't know whom. When the door opened, the students went silent as John F. Kennedy Jr. walked in. They just sat there and stared for a while. ''Everyone's jaw just dropped,'' said Colin Rowan, who was in the class ''Politics and the Press'' when JFK Jr. visited. ''I was just thinking, 'I've got a Kennedy in the room.' '' The awe that surrounds the Kennedys was also present in the classroom that day -- a day Shannon Stewart recalled Saturday as she and the rest of the nation dealt with Kennedy's apparent death in a plane crash. ''It was April 2nd, 1996. We were just taking care of class business, and then he walked in the room,'' said Stewart, who now works for a public relations firm in Washington. ''It was just a total shock." But then Kennedy started talking to the small class about his recently launched magazine, George, and the awe started melting away. ''He talked about politics and making it accessible to everyone,'' Stewart said. ''He wanted to make it interesting to everyone. . . . I remember being impressed at how regular he was. He wanted to be a regular person." Kennedy also talked about the media scrutiny and public attention he drew every day. ''I felt immense sympathy for him and admiration because he had to deal with it all the time,'' said Elisabeth Rutledge, who recently moved back to Austin to raise money for a proposed women's museum in Dallas. Kennedy had to deal with his fame at UT that day as well, after word got around that he was talking to a class. A photographer from the student newspaper showed up and started taking pictures, Rowan said. ''You did get a feeling that he had an unbelievable burden every day being recognized or having this legacy to live up to,'' Rowan said. ''He didn't complain. He said being who he was afforded him opportunities." Kennedy spent 2 1/2 hours talking to the class, taught by Paul Begala, former adviser to President Clinton. Begala now writes for George. To many people in their 20s and early 30s John F. Kennedy Jr. is their link to the Kennedy political dynasty. The news of the search for the missing airplane carrying Kennedy, his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and her sister Lauren reminded Rowan of the tragic past of the Kennedy family. ''This accident fits the Kennedy lore,'' he said. Stewart said: ''It is really sad, and I was really hoping it just wasn't true.''

How did John-John hurt his hand? NOT fighting with his wife, a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr. told the New York Post. Contrary to tabloid reports, Kennedy cut his right hand doing the dishes, said the friend, who wasn't identified in Wednesday's newspaper. ''He's telling family and friends what really happened because the whole thing you should excuse the phrase has gotten out of hand,'' the friend said. Kennedy and wife Carolyn Bessette were sharing a quiet dinner at home before he left on a week-long trip to India earlier this month. He cut his hand while cleaning the dishes after dinner. He wrapped the wound himself and left for India the next day without seeking treatment. The hand began bothering him during the trip and he underwent minor nerve surgery when he got home. He is expected to make a full recovery.

"She's a very private woman," John F. Kennedy Jr. told USA Today in 1998. "It's like you go from having a life you've built on your own terms, and all of a sudden it's being snatched away from you."

At a party in 1984, John F. Kennedy Jr. told contributing editor Sam Kashner that William Manchester's The Death of a President was the only book he would ever read about his father's assassination. This revelation piqued Kashner's obsession with the controversial history, published in 1967. This month, in “A Clash of Camelots,” Kashner sheds new light on the making of the book and the battle surrounding its content, interviewing Manchester's son, John, among others. “John feels that his father was roughly played by the Kennedys, that he deserved better from them,” says Kashner.

"I hope everybody is with the one they love," John F. Kennedy Jr. told a crowd at Manhattan's Roseland on Valentine's night. His date was with Naked Angels, the theater group he supports. It raised money via a performance starring Madeline Kahn and Fisher Stevens. Kennedy arrived alone, stayed late and wasn't seen dancing.

Prince of San Domenico JFK JR. loved the Manhattan restaurant scene and was a regular at the media centric San Domenico. He and a colleague lunched there in his usual booth, hidden from the main room, Thursday, the day before his fatal flight. At one point, he hobbled over on his injured ankle to hug and kiss Diane Sawyer and chat with her lunch companions, Leslie Stahl and Peggy Noonan. He told them he wasn't letting his crutches slow him down. Restaurant co-owner Marisa May says he was in a great mood. He thanked her for always protecting his privacy. "Remember, I brought Carolyn [Bessette] here before anyone knew," he said. "I hope to bring the whole family soon." San Domenico is reputedly the place where his Uncle Ted proposed to his present wife, Vicky, and where his mother and Maurice Tempelsman regularly dined. The staff and the owners, like everyone else, are shattered by the tragedy. Marisa says her husband, Tony, flew to Italy on Thursday and couldn't believe the news he saw there on TV Saturday.
