“alright, man— i get it! trust me, i do. i just don’t know what you want me to do about it,” he shrugs, arms raised in defeat before letting them swing back down to his sides, “kinda already did my part, you know.”

“i said what are you doing here—” ever since his own resurrection, josh has been especially cognizant of those putting their noses where they don’t belong. no one’s nose wound up on krakoa without charles and emma allowing it to be there.

“No, really. Repeat that.”

“oh, all the time,” josh laughs, “i think if it didn’t, i wouldn’t look like this.” one hand moves to gesture vaguely at the golden skin of his face.

“you ever get the feeling that the universe has a fucked up sense of humor?”

josh pretended to think for a moment, brow furrowing in thought for added authenticity, “sorry dude, i don’t know.”

"I wanted to ask about Hope." It was important. He didn't let Josh finish before he spoke up. "How has she been lately? Have you noticed anything different about her since she was brought back?"

josh stiffens, freezing in his tracks for a moment before charles’ light tone sets him back at ease, “sorry,” he lets out a slight laugh, “wasn’t really paying attention. did you— did you need something?”

"You don't have a few minutes to spare for a weary old former professor?" Charles joked softly, a hint of a smile on his face as he eyed Josh.

"that reminds me – how've you been feeling?" josh raises an eyebrow, glossing over the subject of jean's untimely demise as casually as one might step over a puddle or a sewer grate. "i know you're no novice to this," he winces slightly at the declaration, "but, you know, figured i'd ask."

“I know that I’m Jean Grey and I’m supposed to say something about how resilient we are, but it really sucks being blown up.” Even if it’s for a good cause.

"ok – but we brought her back, didn't we? i feel like maybe that cancels out," josh let out a slight, mildly sardonic laugh.

“So are we all just totally fine with the fact that my mother spontaneously combusted? Everyone seems way too calm with everything that’s just happened.”

"okay, and just how much are we supposed to bend the rules when it comes to this kind of stuff? i thought the first rule was, you know, protect mutantkind – and whatever."

“See, we’re not all bad, are we?”

"you know, i don't think that's the safest rhetoric to be spreading around, but the again – what do i know," he shrugged, nonplussed.

“There’s corruption on Krakoa. Some things can only be concealed for so long before the inferno blazes.”

josh's expression hardens. great, just what he wants to discuss. "yeah. and josh is fine," he shrugs. the whole superhero name thing tends to feel a bit cumbersome at times when trying to engage in conversation outside the realm of his current team.
