Potential Water Effects - 

This video was my experimentation with potential water effects. One of the things that makes the simplicity of the Ghibli water work so well is that it’s often layered over a background. The water on my slides looks comically simplistic and bizarre because it doesn’t have this! Unfortunately I realized this a little late in the project (given our animations have to come in and go out to the next persons piece).

Notes:

Create stamps from the ripple lines and repeat in different places. (This way I can repeat the frame of the objects that would move slower but quickly make the water change)

Animating Fujimoto’s hand - 

I tried to get an idea of how a hand (particularly this character’s) would move realistically in the way I wanted it to. 

Unfortunately before I asked for advice from a tutor I was planning to create the movement in a much more simplistic way (by using stamps), this would have taken me way too long and it also looked bizarrely un-realistic. Jon suggested creating the movement of the had separately and then adding it to the animation on after effects which worked much better.

This is my simple animation of the hand movement, using around 5 frames to get the motion.

finish hand slides as far as you can and then repeat them the opposite way round for the hand coming up DO NOT START SINKING IT UNTIL YOU HAVE REPEATED ALL SLIDES OPPOSITE

the hand draws away to slowly to be at all realistic, maybe copy and paste additional frames onto an unused layer just in case they’re needed and speed up the withdrawl

After effects help - 

Jon suggested a much faster and more effective way to animate the hand coming in and out of the frame using after effects

The idea was to animate a simple sequence of the hands movement going in and out of the screen and then exporting that sequence to after effects where I then give it a track to follow and make it appear as if its sinking into the water

Just discovered the ‘free form’ tool that should make creating the water reflections considerably quicker and easier

Studying Koi - 

From looking at this and a number of other videos of Koi fish swimming, it looks as though they keep their head and upper body fairly rigid but use occasional swift movements to change direction. The tail end and the side fins are the things I need to focus on in terms of getting realistic movement in the fish scene.

Attempting timing - 

My audio clip is 17 seconds and I wanted my animation fairly simple to go with it so am trying to work out how best to time the parts with the wording.

I’ve decided on the simple calm water in the Ghibli style to begin with and return to. I want the pot to appear and disappear and have to leave room both the fish/water to change colour and for Fujimoto’s hand to come in and drag the water away. 

I need to leave enough room to capture a little hint of Fujimoto’s distinctive cuff to the audience can see that its him.

(From a little internet research it seems that the red and pink version of his costume as oppose to the red and yellow is more recognizable).
