Chapter 52: Lets go stalk your mom
Nicki celebrates with palms clapping over her head as he makes his way back to her.
"Wow," she concedes. "I'm impressed, you're not all talk."
"Okay, first off, I never said I was the best surfer there was—"
"I didn't say that either."
He laughs, unable to keep the false malice in his tone when he scoffs. From the shore he catches the sound of a few people laughing. He wouldn't be drawn by it, but when he does he sees a young child playing in the water, splashing who he assumes is his mother. She's laughing and chasing him around.
Makes JJ think about Clair for a minute. Maybe they went to the beach back in the day. Before she up and left him.
Why did she come back? Didn't even really coming back though, did she? She's an hour and a half away, in San Diego. For probably the first time in over ten years they are in the same time zone. What was he supposed to do about that?
"Do you feel ready?" Nicki asks him.
His gaze gets pulled back and he starts, confused on what she's asking. He shakes his head when he realizes she was talking about the surf competition.
"Oh, um, yeah, I think so."
Nicki gives him a polite nod, recognizing that he wasn't really in the conversation. "Your head has to be set before you take on a wave, JJ."
He blinks. "It is."
She raises her hands in surrender, the way Shoupe does when he knows he's pushing things. "Just saying is all."
"Nah, I'm good."
"You sure?" she presses.
"You're way pushier than Shoupe, you know that?" he comments, chuckling to himself as he stares off into the sunset.
She grins. "So I've been told." She kicks her foot out, splashing him lightly. "Look, I know you don't like people in your business. But I gotta ask, because this isn't a competition you want to go into with a lot on your mind."
"Shoupe told you."
She nods, communicating slightly her awareness of his maternal issues. "He's just worried about you," she lightly defends.
On some level he's slightly annoyed with his parental figure. On the other hand he isn't really upset that he was talking about it. Didn't really know what that meant. Couldn't be a bad thing, surely. Only down side would be if this conversation was supposed to turn into something like wanting him to...
"I'm not going to reach out."

It kinda feels like that now, staring down at the freefall, wondering if he can leap and make it out in one piece. He couldn’t do it then, but in those rare and hopeful moments he’d think someday. Someday she’d mean it, someday he’d say it back. Someday felt so far away. Someday feels a lot like now.

OUTER BANKS REWATCH | S01E01: "Pilot"
And that's Kiara, or Kie, as we call her. When she's not saving turtles, or listening to Marley, or getting a dolphin tattoo, she hangs out with us. I'm not really sure why, though. So, she's a rich kid, actually. Foot in both worlds. Her family owns The Wreck, which is this Outer Banks institution. Total cash cow with the tourists. You know, I'm not really sure how her parents feel about us. I guess we all sort of have a thing for her.

Chapter 13.
"JJ?" Sarah asks as he passes the rest of the girls team, who've huddle in the middle of the court to give the trainers and coaches space to look into Kiara's welfare.
Peterkin is knelt beside her, a trainer from the hosting school and coach Shoupe also at her side. Kiara is whimpering, back on the floor, and eyes welling with tears she's trying to hold back just to be tough.
JJ takes a knee at her side, gripping her hand as the trainer asks her questions. What she felt, did she hear a crack or pop, etc.
"JJ, you should go back to your team," Coach Peterkin says.
"I'm good," he declines, like it was his decision. "I won't get in the way," he promises.
Kiara's coach gives him a glaring look for not knowing his place, but says nothing after she sees how tightly Kiara is holding his hand, eyes tightly shut as she tries to take deep breaths to calm down.
Coach Peterkin lets the trainer continue testing her player's injury with presses and pokes at different points in her ankle. Kiara nods and shakes her head, informing them of where the pain is.
"Can you walk it off?" Peterkin asks after a moment.
Kiara nods, but JJ is doubtful, hoping that no one lets her get up without assistance. She leans up, taking Peterkin and Shoupe's hands to help pull herself to a standing position. JJ flanks her side, and when she tries to take a step, he's there to catch her before her ankle gives out and she's on the floor again.
He swings her arm around his shoulders, hoping to help her walk off the court. It's clear that she can't put any kind of pressure on it, and he only lets her go a couple more steps before he can't handle the small cries of pain and the tears rolling down her face.
"I got you," he says, before hooking an arm under her knees and lifting her up completely, carrying her out of the gym. Kiara buries her face in his chest, hiding her tears from the crowd.

OUTER BANKS REWATCH | S01E01: "Pilot"
That's JJ, my best friend since the third grade. He's about as local as they come. Latest in a long line of fishing, drinking, smuggling, vendetta-holding salt-lifers who made their living off the water. Best surfer I know. Just don't tell him I said that. Mild kleptomaniac and a future tax cheat.

Chapter 51. Lighthouse
"Why now?" he repeats. "Hmm? Like, she's had ten fucking years to turn that car around and she waits until I'm eighteen?"
Kie hadn't thought of it like that. Honestly, she was so wrapped up in being surprised that Clair sought him out at all that she hadn't even considered the optics.
JJ was built on distrust though. Was always evaluating reasons and motives. Always able to pick out why someone would do him wrong. It was gift he had, really, at picking out the bullshit in someone's actions. He never gave anyone the benefit of the doubt, especially those that had already wronged him. Guess in that way it was also a curse.
It makes sense, what he's feeling though. Kie can't say it doesn't. It clicks for her too. Because how unfair was it for Clair to come seeking him out when she isn't actually responsible for him? It's like making a mess and walking back in once someone else has already cleaned it up.
It is bullshit.
"I'm sorry, Jay," she whispers. Because she has no answer for that question, statement, realization?
"I mean, really?" he continues to rant in disbelief. "She walked out when I was fucking seven. Seven, Kie. And now?" He stands, awestruck by how someone could be so cruel. "What, she thinks she can just walk back when I'm eighteen like it's never happened? Just wash her hands and come back later?"
"Maybe there's a reason she waited."
"A decade Kie. A fucking decade!" he shouts. Tears prick the back of his eyes, though he's forcing those back. He's done crying over people that don't care about him. "I wouldn't even know her if I saw her," he confides.
Part of Kie breaks, hands coming to her mouth, eyes empathic and wanting to soothe an emotional wound that's forming right in front of her. There is no making this better though. There are no words that can make this sting less.
"Man, fuck her," he waves off.
She reaches for him, knowing she's risking him pushing her away just to appear indifferent. She's not unfamiliar with his defenses. Because that's what this is. A defense. She knows he cares about this. This isn't small.
His reaction isn't indifference. It's pain, and sorrow, and rejection. It's aching from a child that is still very much wounded beneath the armor the man has learned to put on. Despite him pushing his feelings aside, trying to make the conscious decision to shut out the long lost parent, he still wants her. Still longs for her embrace and yearns for her love.
How could he not?
His pining and praying and hope filled wishes on stars as he looked out his bedroom window, still happened. All the time he spent searching through the rumble for a glimpse of her when Luke burned all her things, wasn't forgotten. And when his father turned into a monster, he wanted his mother to fight for him. Protect him.
"She was never there," he whispers, into the crook of her neck.

welcome to the club
Tumblr media
JJ opened one eye at her and smirked, “Somethin’ botherin’ you this fine evening?”
“Oh, you know, just homeless, hungry, poor, no family, and John B and I got in a fight ‘cause he keeps acting so weird … other than that, everything’s just peachy.” Sarah looked at him, turning her head to see him looking at her with a sad expression. It was an expression she’d never only really seen on JJ once before, it was a face of recognition.
“Welcome to the club,” JJ pulled his hat down over his eyes as he said, “too broke to be Kook, and apparently now, too orphaned to be a Pogue.”
Or, Sarah doesn't go with Topper. Instead, she goes back to the chateau where she finds JJ waiting for John B to come home.
OR Sarah chose one small different path that changes the trajectory of every one of the Pogue's lives.
or... Sarah just really ships Kie and JJ and will be JJ's therapist if it means he stops being an idiot and tells her he loves her. Lots of jiara, lots of pogues being pogues.

Together Chapter 48: No, baby, it's not
Kie paddles hard as the swell surges beneath her board, standing as she rises to the top of the wave and glides down it. She gets through about half of it before she realizes that it's more than she's used to. She makes an incorrect adjustment and bails, diving under the swell.
Once under she gets caught, tumbling through the barrel of the wave, but she remains calm. She'd taken a large enough breath to fight her way through and kicks with all her strength until she's breached the surface.
"Kiara!" she hears JJ yell, frantic as he's paddling out to where she was pulled under.
She begrudgingly coughs up some water and swims to her board, resting her upper half on the top of it while trying to catch her breath.
"Kie," JJ says again, now at her side. "Holy shit, are you okay?" His words are breathless and panty, clearly worried as he scans her for injuries.
"I'm fine."
"Are you sure, you took that pretty hard—"
"I'm fine, JJ!" she snaps. "I'm not a baby, alright, I'm fine."
JJ's eyebrows shoot up in surprise. He bites his lip, looking at a passing wave and nodding. "Yup, sorry," he says shortly.
