no offence but rhiannon rings like a bell through the night and wouldn’t you love to love her? takes to the sky like a bird in flight and who will be her lover? all your life you’ve never seen a woman taken by the wind…would you stay if she promised you heaven? will you ever win? she is like a cat in the dark and then she is the darkness. she rules her life like a fine skylark and when the sky is starless…all your life you’ve never seen a woman taken by the wind. would you stay if she promised you heaven? will you ever win? will you ever win?

“D-id I nail it though?”, Max tried to make the question sound playful, but truth is he actually was looking forward to get some feedback from Jia. It was pretty important to him… he might or not have a special place on his notebook full of notes from things he’s learned from the best saleswoman around. “I mean now I don’t really know what to do with all this useless information about this guy who shares my name. I’m certain I could write a young adult novel… maybe mix it with a bit of sci fi, turn it into a comic. Endless possibilities. The great great Maxwell Phillips’ adventures”, he joked a little. “Never a bad time for a bagel though… now I’m kinda craving one”
Tumblr media
“it’s far from useless, maxwell.” jia tsked softly, finally tearing her eyes away from her games; the time had apparently come to impart wisdom. “you said he was talking about his beloved grandson, right? it’ll be time for him to renew his contract with us before you know it. you ask him how the other maxwell is doing before anything else and throw in some of those trivial details he mentioned, 99% guarantee you’ve got it in the bag. you should count yourself lucky; it’s not often you get handed a future sale on a silver platter like this.” clicking her pen idly, she leaned back in her chair and sized him up. “you’ve got tons of potential, y’know. you’re just the right balance of handsome and endearing to charm just about anyone, if you only knew how.”

“i noticed.” jia’s eyes remained fixed on her computer screen, where she was currently losing yet another game of minesweeper. any minute now she’d switch to spider solitaire. lucky for her that her computer wasn’t visible from gina’s office. “i wanted to laugh or get you a sympathetic bagel or something, but i could tell you were just on the edge of closing and didn’t wanna break your concentration.”
“Spent over an hour on the phone with this client who wouldn’t stop telling me all about his beloved grandson Maxwell after I introduced myself, as much as I tried to politely redirect the subject to our paper products. But hey… at least I sold the deal, huh? Props to my mother for naming me like this, I guess”

“You’re absolutely right, forgive me, m’lady.” Benny bowed his head and clutched his chest in mock contrition, although his bright, persistent smile gave him away. It never seemed to dim no matter what. “In my defense, I wasn’t informed that you’d be in attendace this evening. Something tells me you’re one of the scariest things walking the streets of Scranton at any given moment, though. I might ask you to walk me home.”
He paused to take a sip of his margarita. Benny had never been afraid to admit that he strongly preferred sugary, fruity drinks to the beer his brethren seemed to enjoy so much.
“You can just say you were bored and you missed me, ya know. It’s okay. Confidentiality still in place.”
Tumblr media
“benjamin, it’ll be one cold day in hell when i’ll say i miss you, or have missed you, or will ever miss you.” jia rolled her eyes and ordered her fourth vodka tonic, pulling out her phone to scroll idly through her instagram feed just so she had something to look at besides benny. even she wasn’t sure if she was being entirely truthful. “i would rather chew glass than sit through another dinner with your obnoxious fraternity buddies.”
alright, that part was definitely true.
“who are you here for, then, if you didn’t know i was coming? don’t tell me you’ve found a new object for your affections. do you plan to date the entire office?”

It wasn’t even just the fact that she’d been told to never mind, but in that tone, that penny was so familiar with, that had her just shrugging it off. It was easier to forget about it than to think too hard about what she’d missed. “Well, good, because I don’t think anyone could compete with you.” Smirking as she downed her last shot, she couldn’t help the mischevious little smirk that crawled ovver her lips. “If you had to do someone from the office…who would it be?”
Tumblr media
“gina, of course,” she replied without missing a beat; she was buzzed, after the combined efforts of her vodka tonics and the shots penny provided, but nowhere near buzzed enough to answer that question honestly. a few select faces flickered through her mind, one of which she’d already had the honor of ‘doing,’ but none she’d admit to. it’d feel too much like exposing a weakness, and she wasn’t in the habit of giving out knowledge that could be used against her. “i keep my eyes on the prize, y’know, it’s the gold medal or nothing for me. and i just really have a thing for mom jeans.”

For a long moment, Penny just started at her friend with a look of utter confusion as she tried to make sense of the string of words that had come tumbling out of her mouth. “I mean… ants don’t really appeal to me either… but… is that at like the natural whatever museum because… I don’t know, maybe the staring is part of remembering the painting of them? I don’t…. What does that have to do with cute boys?” Taking one of her shots, she sort of thoughtfully sipped it back as she pondered over it.
Tumblr media
jia listened in wonder, awestruck that it was even possible for anyone to miss the point so severely. this conversation was rapidly getting away from her, and after draining another shot glass, she decided to try and get it back on the rails. “never mind. all i’m saying is the guy’s not my type, but i can see why you’re drooling over him.”

“Oh, you’re such a debbie downer sometimes.” Smirking at her, as her attention shifted to looking for the server, Penny finally spotted him on his way to the table with at least three shots for them each. “You looked like you needed a few, but maybe that’s just your pro brooding face.” Ignoring anything that could be taken as a dig, she didn’t even seem notice any of them. Eyeing each pretty golden shot as it was set down, she turned her smirk toward Jia with a bit of a knowing grin. “Have you seen the new IT guy? Holy crap, right?”
Tumblr media
“if you say so,” jia replied with a noncommittal shrug; she’d been vaguely aware of his arrival and subsequent presence in the office, but he had yet to make any kind of impression. maybe because they hadn’t had the chance to speak thus far. even so, she sincerely doubted he’d be added to her list of scranton’s most eligible bachelors anytime soon. she picked up her first shot and downed it right away, then set her glass down with a flourish. “kinda like a rembrandt painting in a museum. doesn’t appeal to me personally, but from an objective standpoint i can see what’s making everybody stop and stare.”

It took everything within Sol to muster up the courage to show up at Poor Richard’s tonight. She was actually about to crash on her couch when she felt like Sprinkles was giving her a very deserved judging look. Twenty minutes, and one awkward Uber ride, later Sol found herself outside of the dive bar. She thought about turning around and leaving but ended up going inside of the establishment instead. Upon entering the place, she gave a brief scan of the bar and spotted a familiar face. Hoping it wouldn’t be too much of a bother to ask to sit with her, Sol made her way towards Jia’s direction.
“ Well, then I guess I’d have to kick some elephant or airplane’s ass.” She jokingly responded, giving her a friendly smile. “  I supposed now I have to make it up to you by getting the next round of drinks, oh no.” Sol offered, more than ready to get a couple of drinks in for the evening. She didn’t always go out for drinks, so on the rare occasions she did decide to do it, she figured there was no harm in trying to leave with at least a buzz. “ What are you in the mood for?”
Tumblr media
“i’ll take a vodka tonic, please.” if sol wanted to pay for the drinks, jia would be more than happy to oblige. poor richard’s already took a significant cut of her paycheck every month, in both booze and the occasional property damage. it was only by virtue of her sparkling personality that she hadn’t been banished from the establishment altogether by now.
“i wonder if anyone in the office thought to nominate a designated driver,” she pondered aloud while waiting for their drinks to get made. she’d certainly be in no shape to operate a motor vehicle by the night’s end. “i’d hate to see yet another dunder mifflin pub sleepover. these seats aren’t that comfy for sleeping. and it took us ages to clean benny up off the floor last time.”

“Oh, loosen up, Jia-Bia, it’s just me!” Sliding into the seat beside her, Penny was already pleasantly buzzed from her own private little preparty at home while she’d gotten ready. In one of her dresses that was just bordering on too small, and her signature shade of nearly garish hot pink, she didn’t seem to care that it clashed with her bright yellow heels. “Look! I got you a drink, now you have to stop being a Brooder McBrooderson! I have shots coming, too!”
Grinning brightly as she scanned the bar for anyone else from the Office before again for potential eye candy, she returned her attention to her friend. “So… Anyone I should steer clear from because you want’em all to yourself?”
Tumblr media
“oh, i’m perfectly loose. i am loosened to capacity. i just happen to like brooding.” she stared intently at the glass penny had set in front of her, swirling its contents ‘round and ‘round while she contemplated whether she even wanted to take anyone here home with her on this particular evening. all while waiting impatiently for the shots to arrive, of course. “don’t worry about it, penny-benny. i wouldn’t dream of competing with you for the momentary affections of a stranger, much less the ones you find in this establishment. that just wouldn’t be fair to you,” she teased, elbowing penny playfully before finally downing her drink in one gulp. “now where are those shots you mentioned?”

jia was a few vodka tonics into her evening at poor richard’s, and if anyone asked, it was in celebration of another outstanding performance review. in truth, she never really needed a special occasion to partake in an alcoholic beverage or several, but it was a solid enough excuse for the bartenders who knew her face and her usual order by heart and often worried she might succumb to liver failure in the next ten to twelve minutes. she’d been brooding quietly in her corner and watching the clientele mill in and out in search of someone to sweet talk into buying her more drinks, but when someone from her workplace came and settled in at her table, she perked up and shifted into office jia mode.
“i was wondering when you’d show your face. leaving me to my own devices out here in the wilderness of suburban pennsylvania just seems uncivilized. what if i was hit by an airplane or run over by an elephant?”

“Awe, Jia! That’s to nice! I’m not much of a talker in the morning, so that’s really not much of an issue for me!” Grinning bright, it was obvious how pleased the bubbly blond was with the answer she received. “I’ve been trying to convince everyone to come to Poor Richard’s after work, maybe we could have a company wide contest. Chances are it’d still end up in a tie for us, though. If it does happen, promise me you won’t let me make out with anyone.”
Tumblr media
“penny, i’m not sure the gods themselves could keep you from making out with someone when you set your mind to it. which doesn’t take much,” she teased, her smile settling back into her trademark amused smirk. “you better recruit someone else for lifeguard duty, though, ‘cause i’m not planning on staying sober for long. like... a designated driver, but instead of keeping you out from behind the wheel, they keep you from climbing into anyone’s lap.”

“Really? You mean that? I’ve never been at a job long enough before, and I really try here.” Well… most of the time. It wasn’t like she hadn’t needed to be woken up from a hangover nap at her desk before, but she did her best to power through on Redbull. In short, she actually cared. “I’d be more surprised if you were nervous, I can’t even picture that. So… drinks tonight to celebrate?”
Tumblr media
“you get all my messages to me on time and you don’t expect me to make small talk in the mornings, what else does anyone need from a receptionist?” jia’s ears perked up at the prospect of drjnks after work, an exuberant smile spreading across her face in her excitement. “please, it’s been too long, penny. let’s have another drinking contest; maybe this time it won’t end in a tie.”

“i did hear that,” jia nodded, unperturbed. she felt like her own childhood had been one long performance review, so this was familiar territory. “i got nothing to be nervous about. don’t sweat it, you’ve been a perfectly good receptionist. one of my personal favorites.”
Tumblr media
“Did you hear that performance reviews are today? Oh man, I’m so excited, it’s going to be my first one! Are you nervous?”

“oh, each year just gets better and better, ms. gina! especially under your fearless leadership.” of course, jia didn’t truly feel that she needed direction from anyone in order to sell paper and paper accessories, but she already had the coming year’s christmas bonus in mind. “i didn’t win salesman of the year this go around, but i did get second place and a week of free pizzas from alfredo’s. that was a highlight.” a gentle reminder of her sales prowess was never misplaced.
the question regarding the party planning committee caught her off guard, though, a feeling she did not experience very often and certainly did not enjoy.
“mm... i think my talents are better put to use in sales. i’m really hoping to take home my third salesman of the year award this time.” besides, the types of parties jia typically threw would not be considered appropriate for the workplace.
Tumblr media
“Hey, thanks for meeting with me. I know performance reviews aren’t anyone’s favorite way to spend an afternoon, but unfortunately, we gotta get ‘em done before the end of the month.”
Gina smiled ruefully at the employee seated across from her in her office, idly fidgeting with the papers on her desk.
“So, we’ll start with some questions for you. One: how would you describe your experience at Dunder Mifflin over the past twelve months? And…” She paused, double checking her notes with a soft sigh before continuing. “Two: would you like to be considered for the new Party Planning Committee?”

Is that (Jennie Kim)?! Oh, no, it’s just (Jia Valentine, 26, she/her), the (Sales Associate) from Dunder Mifflin. I heard they’re (charismatic, engaging, adaptable) but can also be (overconfident, careless, lazy). They’re (single) and have been working there for (five years) and post a lot @(msvalentine).
Tumblr media
Any of the resident office gossips will tell you she doesn’t have a fancy pedigree, or even a college credit to speak of; she was never given any formal training in communications or the art of the deal. Indeed, she coasts by on pure natural talent for charm and slight deceit - honed into a razor-sharp edge by years of being a problem child and juvenile delinquent. She beguiled her way not only into this job, but also into the hearts and minds of her loyal client base, who never fail to ask for her by name. And a memorable name it is: Jia Valentine. So darling and lyrical, many refuse to accept that it’s the name listed on her birth certificate.
It came as no surprise when she was offered the Head of Sales position, but she summarily turned it down, perfectly content at her current balance of pay and responsibility. Besides, she makes enough in commissions to rival the potential salary, anyway.
hello!! i think most of us are acquainted but i'm angel and this is my darling jia! she's a long-time oc who's been repurposed for this office and i'm very excited to play her here!!
⚛ °。 about.
full name: jia [redacted] valentine. birthdate: february 2nd. birthplace: scranton, PA. zodiac: aquarius sun, gemini moon, scorpio rising. mbti: entp. gender: cis female. orientation: bisexual.
tw: drugs and self harm, sorta.
with a name like jia valentine, the young girl's parents surely thought they'd set her up for greatness as a beloved musician or soap opera star. and for the first six or seven years of her life, she believed them, and took it to heart that she owed it to them to carry on their legacy. with her father a CFO and her mother a pediatric surgeon, she had no choice but to see the very large shadows they cast, and being the middle child only made it all the more difficult to find a bit of sun.
where her older sister excelled in academics and her younger brother looked to be right on track for a baseball scholarship, jia took to the arts quite beautifully as her name had predicted. she was particularly passionate about and proficient at playing the violin, practicing until her fingertips bled by choice and never failing to dazzle at her recitals.
however, since it was the thing she loved the most, it was the first thing her parents would take from her as punishment when she stepped even slightly out of line, which was often. she was a girl who would come home with grass stains on the white stockings she was forced to wear, who would arm wrestle the boys in her class at recess and get detention for throwing paper wads and giggling with her friends during the lessons. her grades also suffered due to a case of undiagnosed adhd that she wouldn't find out about until she was much older and out from under her parents' roof.
at school, she was able to talk her way out of trouble more often than not. even though she was a definitive underachiever, she was still smart and funny enough that she built up a solid rapport with all of her teachers. her parents were relentless, though, on the occasions that they were called about her behavior, and they thoroughly emptied the art of violin of its joy for jia.
on one fateful day when she was thirteen, she came home after the school had called her parents about an incident involving a visiting superintendent and the cafeteria spaghetti to find them waiting for her. she knew the exact trajectory the ensuing fight would take, and rather than wait for them to forbid her from practicing for however many weeks, she walked directly upstairs despite their continued yelling and decisively bashed her violin against any nearby surface until it snapped in two.
that was the first time she was sent to juvie.
more visits would follow, mostly due to truancy but sometimes vandalism or breaking & entering. by the time she graduated high school, she was on a first name basis with most of the corrective staff and even they couldn't help but like her at least a little and tell her specifically not to come back at the end of her every sentence.
that wouldn't happen until she turned eighteen, though, and left her parents' house the minute after midnight on her birthday. her natural talents for charm and deceit lent themselves nicely to a career in drug running, and she lived quite happily and luxuriously for a few years that way. since she was exceptionally good at it, she never, ever got caught, until she did.
one of her clients, unbeknownst to her, had gotten himself arrested, and was offered a deal for a lighter sentence if he'd wear a wire and help them catch his dealer. four years of this life and it was over in a matter of seconds and a few flashes of blue and red lights.
jia didn't know how, or why, but after waiting in jail for over a month, she was sent for personally by the warden. when she made her way to his office, beige jumpsuit and handcuffs at all, she sat down and found herself face to face with the man who'd overseen her old juvenile detention center for almost twenty years apparently, he'd been promoted.
"alright, ms. valentine." he'd always been a very straightforward person. "you're still young, and maybe despite my better judgement, i still believe there's hope for you yet. get out of here and straighten yourself up. don't let me see you again."
the next thing she knew, she was in street clothes, and she was free.
it would have been easy and comfortable to dive headfirst back into her life of crime, but something about what the warden said stuck with her. she couldn't remember the last time someone had believed in her, no matter how unkindly he may have put it. when she headed straight to poor richard's, she saw a help wanted ad for a sales associate at a paper supply firm.
hey, technically she had several years' experience in sales.
there were other, more qualified applicants, ones with college degrees and references who weren't in prison, but jia's quiet intelligence and witty charms won out in the end, as they had a way of doing.
it's been five years since then, and she's won sales(wo)man of the year twice in that interim. one might never suspect that she's making it all up as she goes along.
⚛ °。  connections.
