Petra Ral is Not Soft

I may not be the most qualified to speak on this, considering that I a) have an obvious bias b) am kind of brand new to this fandom and c) have only seen the anime. But even from being here (as in the fandom) for only a week or so, I’ve already picked up on a few patterns, especially in writing.

Petra is a badass. So why is she so often portrayed as soft as she is, and as not much more than that? Sure, she's canonically kind and very caring, but she's also a soldier. An elite one, at that. She is serious, and even violent (re: the way she spoke to/about the Female Titan when she and Levi Squad went up against her).

There just seems to be such a polarity between canon and fanon portrayals. Petra is kind and caring, but who's to say she can't also be intense and fierce? In terms of Rivetra, I feel like she's so often painted as that stereotypical soft, blushing, uwu girl who is innocent and naïve, while Levi is still characterized as that stoic, emotionally handicapped version of himself that’s pretty true to character.

I say give Petra some edge. I picture her as the person we see in the show, who talked back to Oruo when he got mouthy, who became almost bloodthirsty when going up against the Female Titan. She’s an adult, and an elite fighter, and she deserves to be depicted as such. Leave room for the kindness she held for Eren, for that man she comforted as he died, for the romantic idealism she can have. But don’t write off the fact that she’s seen some shit, and can very likely be intense and serious when it comes down to it.

One of my favorite quotes of all time which has become a sort of personal mantra is, “Be soft and kind but take no shit.” I think Petra has the potential to be a perfect interpretation of this.

I want to see her call Levi out when he’s being particularly cold or apathetic in the relationship. I want to see her kick ass in training and in the field. I want to see her as the soldier she is, while also maintaining that sweetness about her. There’s room for both, you know?

I don’t know, maybe I’m reading the wrong fics. I haven’t been here for long, so it’s entirely possible I’ve missed a few things. It’s just what I’ve picked up on so far. If you disagree please interact! I’ll always be happy to learn more and see other perspectives :)
