SIMPLE (우지 solo)
LISTEN SIMPLE IS SUCH A GOOD SONG. I want to quickly talk about how amazing Lee Jihoon is. Don’t take this as me discrediting the other members, as I love all of them a whole lot and come this album, I genuinely feel that all of them deserve solo tracks - or at least duets, after seeing their improvement in all ways: choreography, vocals, variety, etc. But, I want to take this moment to really focus on Lee Jihoon. The boy who has been writing and composing and producing songs for Seventeen since before their debut. We all remember how he said that he feels that Seventeen’s future is on his shoulders. And we all know that he said in an interview that he no longer feels it to that extent… But, to be honest, judging from what we know of his personality, I sort of doubt that. I feel like Jihoon, even with the work spread evenly between everyone, probably still feels a huge amount of pressure on his shoulders - everyone really knows /him/ as the lyricist, composer, and producer (along with Bumzu), and not as much the other members (in which let’s remember that the Hip Hip line write their own lyrics). I have to imagine that such a public position only goes to increase the pressure on his shoulders - even if he does have many people to lean on, and he seems to be opening up a bit. I have to wait for the full translation of the lyrics, but the fact of the matter is that the song in a whole probably means a lot to Jihoon, and for him to have the ability to have a solo track on the album is absolutely huge. I think it’s sort of like validation for how far he’s come in his career. In roughly a year, Seventeen has accomplished a lot, coming from a small company and a young fan base. (I in no way mean that groups from bigger companies don’t work hard, either, as all idols work hard to get to debut. I just mean that coming from a small company usually results in a harder road traveled in terms of post-debut and winning things.) And, for Jihoon, someone very stoic, to have cried at their first win, you could almost see the pressure slide off his shoulders as he held the trophy. So, for not only his hard work to have been validated, but for his solo track to have been chosen for this album repackage is huge. I think it just further validates Jihoon’s musical capabilities and the trust and support that Seventeen and Pledis have in and for Jihoon. This is honestly such a pointless rant, and just my general opinion, but either way, you can’t argue that SIMPLE is a beautiful song. The fact that Chan sings (?) it before bed often just speaks of how much it means.
Please support Seventeen by watching their new MV on their channel when it comes out (in twenty minutes as of this moment!), streaming their new album on MelOn, Naver, Genie, etc. if possible, and searching on Naver. If you can purchase an album, that would be wonderful, too, but just streaming the music video on YouTube will help them out immensely. These thirteen boys have fought long and hard to get where they are. This album honestly, more so then the last, brings me back to the Seventeen Project, where I first really felt my heart pulled towards these young men who struggled through a lot and do so much on their own. I hope to watch these boys take many more steps forward.
