find a match
she looks at her phone in disbelief, teeth gritting at the audacity of her sister to end the call while she was still talking to her half-way through. if she weren’t having her lunch right now in the mess hall where there are many staff and cadets present, and the need to at least preserve the reputation of an officer (not that she really cared but her direct superior would have jump down at her throat), she would have cursed colourfully in flaming anger.
instead she settles down by breathing in deeply, and taking mental note to give a talking to the next time she sees her sister. she can hide for all she wants but ultimately as a k-science cadet her sister would have to face her during lecture. she concludes that her sister lack the nutriment of love, and as her older sister she ought to show concern for that. their mother had totally given up on her love life (or lack thereof), but if her sister follows her footstep she is going to get all the blame for it.
she looks up when she heard her name being called, and her expression immediately changes as a bright smile shows up on her face.
“have a seat! it’s a pleasure to be having lunch with a handsome young lad,” she quips, gesturing slightly to the empty seat in front of her. it could get a little crowded at mealtimes and she’s not one to mind sharing spaces with the cadets. though she doesn’t understand why half of the cadets population seem rather fearful of her. she isn’t a kaiju, she only studies them.

chanyeolxdr:
he’s craving frozen yogurt or anything sweet, he’ll really settle for whatever comes his way, and that’s why he’s hurriedly making his way towards the canteen but the call of his name is a welcome deterrence when he recognizes the voice right away. “jihyo noona!” he grins as he pauses, walking her way instead. “hm? what are we going to do? you’re not going to use me as a test subject, are you noona?” chanyeol cheekily grins, leaning closer as if checking for anything suspicious.
“i’m not good with needles,” he jokes, as if the beginning technology of the jaeger fightsuits didn’t require a more intrusive spinal connection. he’d been prepared for it after all the things he’s heard (and all his time in the hospital) only to find out the technology is much more advanced than what outsiders know of.
“lead the way, noona. i’ll follow you,” just like a loyal dog. if only he knew. “but really, i’m not becoming part of an experiment am i? as cool as it sounds, kyungsoo will kill me if i can’t drift with him tomorrow for whatever reason. you’ve seen him around, he’s grumpy looking enough when he’s not mad.”
“it’s a surprise. pleasant surprise. you’ll know when we reach.” she replies with a secretive smile. “and of course not. if i need a test subject i’d pick from those who always get on my nerves. you’re definitely not on that list.” this tall boy in front of her is too adorable and precious for her to ever get displeased at him. and he has never refuse her requests, even if they’re ridiculous ones. if only all other rascal cadets are more like him.
“no needles or experiment of that sort, i assure you.” talking about experiment makes her eyes twitch in distress as memories of countless nights without decent sleep surfaces. “not gonna cost you an arm or leg either so don’t worry. kyungsoo’s just a grumpy teddy bear, if he does try to kill you I’ll handle him for you.” there has yet to be a cadet she can’t take care of since she’s the type to kick their arse into oblivion.
“we’re heading out though, it’s not very far. were you going to the mess hall before i approach you?” after all the direction he was previously making his way to leads there. “we can get some food before going.”

it is a bad habit she admits, drinking too much coffee for her own good, and it’s a serious addiction. still that doesn’t stop her in any way from getting a fresh cup of coffee right in the morning to get herself working, and even more cups throughout the day when necessary. and there comes the night time when she immensely regret having consumed too many cups of those caffeine. heightened heart rate and difficulty falling asleep. those weren’t good things for her.
the shared space in the complex is quiet at this time of the night, a stark contrast from where she’s used to the lively atmosphere during the day. she fidgets with the rubik’s cube in her hand, twisting it absentmindedly. the footsteps are soft, but obvious in the stillness of night. she looks up to meet a pair of exhausted eyes and understanding flashes across her own ones. she returns her smile along with a nod.
“always the case, miss lee,” she chuckles and plays along with her teasing. “i’m no charming guy to swoon you off the floor in this beautiful night, but i’m a good companion if you can’t sleep.” it’s not the first time she has seen luda in sleepless nights like these. she won’t be the one to relieve her of her nightmares, but at least she can have someone to spend the time away.
* sleepwalking ;
@jihyoxdr
she’s become to used to the pattern, to lying in bed, hoping to fall into a deep slumber in futility, to surrendering to a sleepless night, to rising from her bed and leaving her flat and wandering the shared spaces in the complex. it’s a little strange, walking through them when no one else is around, as if she’s walking through an alternate dimension. it’s a little disconcerting, in all honesty, which makes finding a familiar face all the more relieving.
she spots the biologist across the room, their eyes meeting instantly. unlike luda, jihyo doesn’t seem to suffer from nightmares. rather, she suffers from an extreme case of caffeine addiction, one of the worst luda has seen in all her years and yet, the elder woman always seemed to be so well put together despite it.
she casts a tired smile in her direction, approaching slowly with steps labored with unrest. “too much coffee again, miss song?” she says with a teasing lilt, addressing her formally only to add to the tone.

simple pleasure
“having fun and relaxing once in a while is good for you, my dear,” she coaxes, guiding her fellow younger colleague towards a specific direction in mind. god knows how much talking she had to do to persuade joohyun to get out of that cave in the shatterdome away from her beloved jaeger. she hadn’t seen such a dedicated officer like her to the point that if she could stay overnight and sleep beside the jaeger, she totally would. twenty-four hours stuck next to the giant mechanized weapon and jihyo has no doubt joohyun wouldn’t even blink an eye at that. sure she herself has spent days, even weeks, practically living in the laboratory for the sake of research, but she is nowhere as obsessed. kaijus are gross, but it is her duty.
“i know what you’re gonna say next, but that’s different.” she knows joohyun is going to say she does have fun, or that spending time fixing jaegers is fun for her, clearly. joohyun may be small, she stood half a head shorter than her, but she has a fiery temper if annoyed and maybe that’s why she has taken a liking to her instantly.
“just one or two hours, and then you can get back to your treasured jaeger.” in case she walks off before they could even reach their destination. maybe she should get her drunk someday? doesn’t seem like a smart idea though.

gravity check
“seriously would it kill you not to break the stuff in here for once?” she remarks, lips pressed tightly together and her brows furrowed. she doesn’t remember the number of times he broke or destroyed the equipment, but evidently more than enough for her to get annoyed about it. she had been so furious about it when she first found out things in the lab were getting ruined at random occurrences, and mostly the poor k-science cadets had to take the brunt of her anger, until she finally caught the culprit.
and she wasn’t even able to do much about it, except warn him not to do it again, mainly because it wasn’t of his intention to do so.  he’s a good kid who is just way too clumsy. but that didn’t stop her from raging whenever he breaks the stuff in the lab. maybe she should just ban him from entering the laboratory altogether.
“it’s a miracle you survived till now,” she shakes her head. “go get the cleaning supplies and clean up the mess here,” she shoos. she has to prepare the lab for tomorrow’s classes, might as well have him help her out. though she wonders if it’s a bad choice to have such a clumsy person like sicheng to get to the task.

markxdr:
suffice to say, when mark saw the wisps of smoke trailing out of the shared ventilator, he knew he should probably go over to jihyo’s as soon as possible. being less than an apartment away, he had gotten to know the biologist quite well in his time at the academy, in both a professional and a personal way. if you had asked him a year ago what he thought of jihyo, he would probably say she acted like the devil and would bitch-smack you if you made her mad. now, though, the impression hadn’t really changed except for the relationship of the two being a complete and utter shitstorm that liked to make cookies at 9 am and leave the entire complex hungry as hell.
scratch that, mark was probably the devil when it came to the cookie idea.
currently, mark was supposed to arrive at the elder’s a bit later for dinner, although he doesn’t know why he agreed to the idea in the first place if he knows just how messed up she can get at cooking. still, jihyo had promised mark to take his advice into account and practice a bit more, so he supposes it wouldn’t be too bad of an idea to visit her.
and like most things, he was wrong.
hurrying over as quick as possible, he knocks on the door and waits patiently for jihyo to come let him in. he knows that if there’s smoke, then she is probably flailing about trying to fix everything with her mind occupied on the single thought of not burning her apartment down. still, even if with expectancy of things being bad, he didn’t realize just how bad it might be.
mark barely has enough time to open his mouth and utter a greeting upon jihyo opening the door, when the smell of a thousand deaths wafts into his face and he feels the niagara falls of tears begin to fill his eyes from the smoke. covering his face with his hands, mark enters a coughing fit before being able to somewhat control himself, straightening up and flashing jihyo a sympathetic smile.
“eager is an understatement. i’m guessing you didn’t follow my advice?” he chokes out as he enters the apartment, watching the elder dashes into the kitchen that is slowly filling  up with a new wave of smoke. following after her, he cover this mouth with his shirt sleeve and pokes his head in, eyeing her flailing figure as she dashes around the room. in truth, mark thought jihyo to be a very clean person, so when he sees the burnt pans piled into the sink and the grocery bags laying about, he feels extremely concerned.
“noon, did you not use the butter as a pan base like i told you to! please tell me you used the butter!” the look of horror at the disrespect of the food in front of him is clearly evident in both voice and partially-covered expression, and if anything he feels like he might be the one to scold someone for a change.
a wave of mini panic surges through her as she hurries to drown the burnt frying pan under the running water. it sizzles as more choking smoke filled her kitchen, but at least the pan didn’t catch fire and in turn burned the whole of her apartment down. she isn’t one to care a lot about reputation, she does whatever she likes and according to her current mood, but burning down the entire apartment because the pan caught on fire while she was cooking isn't something she wants the whole world to know of her.
she can dissect kaiju but she can’t cook to save her life. thank god for cafeteria and outside food to help her through her thirty plus years of life.
waving her arms in attempt to fan off the burnt smell, she crinkles her nose at mark’s horrified look on his face. why does she feel as though she’s a kid who is about to be scolded by the parent for getting into trouble, when she is clearly much older than him?
“i did!” she protests strongly at his accusation, gesturing to the slab of used butter on the counter. “it ended up in the trash anyway.” that hadn’t anything to do with the use of butter though. as for the second attempt, she was about to put the butter when the doorbell rang. so… it wasn’t absolutely all her fault.
“third time’s the charm! it’s going to come out perfect this time round.” she reassures, grabbing another pan from the cabinet. the third one and the last one, and if she burnt this one too, she would have to go buy new pans. although she isn’t sure why she had three pans stocked up in her kitchen in the first place, but it was a good thing she did. and one would wonder how she had the confidence her food would come out nicely when she almost burned her kitchen down twice in a row.
but now that mark is here, she is even more at ease than before. because if all else fail, she can just throw the cooking part to him and be done with it. absolutely no shame in that at all.

simplicity
she loves kids. she really does. they’re cute and adorable, and she always couldn’t resist squashing their chubby cheeks. that didn’t mean she couldn’t grumble about it though, especially when her brother threw his pair of five-year-old twins to her to look after for the entire day. they’re lovely angels one moment and then the next they’re devils in disguise. she barely had the energy to keep up with them and honestly she would rather spend her entire day in the lab researching on kaiju. it’s nowhere as tiring as looking after kids.
“jaewoo come back here!” she yells at her nephew who had slipped off from her grip and went running the very first chance he had. sensing that jaehye seems to want to chase after her brother too, jihyo caught hold of the young girl before she could manage to run away and carried her in her arms instead.
“jaewoo if you still want your lollipop you better come back right now!” it doesn’t matter they’re in the middle of the streets with people around them, but it would be more problematic if she lost the kid from her sight and had to end up searching for him when they’re supposed to be having their lunch soon. though jaewoo seems to have halted in his track after bumping into someone and she took the opportunity to catch up to him.

man’s best friend
there is no hiding of the wide smile etched on her face as she ends the call on her phone. the very same smile when substantial result came out of the all the endless grueling researches done, or when her favourite food is in front of her and waiting to be eaten. it’s a rare opportunity to come by and she would be silly not to agree to it.
her lectures are done for the day, and while she still has a report to finish up by tomorrow’s afternoon, that could wait till the night anyway. it shouldn’t take her too long since it’s mostly done and she just need to conclude it up properly. sparing a few hours for this wouldn’t result in dire consequences and that’s just all it takes for her to nod her head to it.
she briefly ponders over whether she should bring someone along with her for extra help when chanyeol appears in her range and her eyes lit up in delight. what a great timing for him to show up. as far as she knows there shouldn’t be anything else going on for his class for the rest of the day. she jogs up to him with a rather scheming grin.
“chanyeol~ i need a few hours of your time, you’ll help won’t you?”

all things scorched
she isn’t sure how it came to this mess. her sparkling clean kitchen, one which the number of times used is countable with only one hand, is in a horrible mess. it’s just two dishes and one soup, how hard could it be? terribly hard for her, as a matter of fact. not that she would outright admit her atrocious (non-existence) cooking skill.
the kitchen counter is scattered with chopped ingredients and half unpacked grocery bags. they’re going to be used up anyway, she didn’t think there was any reason why she has to bother unpacking them neatly at one side. one burnt pan filled with water over in the sink, and black unidentifiable substances in the waste bin that were totally the failed products of her cooking.
it isn’t that she’s bad at cooking. she just got distracted by the news on the television and forgot the food was still cooking until she smelled something bad. she just had to focus.
she turns the stove on again, placing the pan on top of the glass surface. the doorbell rings right at this moment and a familiar face appears on the intercom monitor. goodness why is he here so early. she has yet to even be done with one dish at all how is she going to prove that she can actually cook something decent? she doesn’t even have time to at least attempt to make the kitchen more presentable as the doorbell rings again and she rushes off to open the door for him.
“you’re early! too eager to try my cooking?” she jokingly says as she ushers him in. “beverages in the fridge, help yourself to– oh shit!” she scrambles over to the stove where clearly yet another pan is burnt as pungent smell and smoke fills up the kitchen area.

hello! jihyo’s mun here. i actually still has one last paper to go, but in the mean time i can still plot. jihyo is a kaiju biologist and has been serving the ppdc for over 6 years and is in her 7th year. she also gives lectures to the k-science cadets in the academy. she wouldn’t hesitate to kick your ass if you annoy her. doesn’t give a damn if you’re 5, or 10 or 15 years younger, if you get along with her, you get along with her. except under serious circumstances like during lectures and lab sessions her commands are absolute orders.
here’s the link to her profile and bio pages. i also have a plot page up already, and if you find nothing up to your liking i’m open and up for suggestions and brainstorming. like this post if you’d like to plot and i’ll slide into your im when i can!
