Pre-writing Strategies
Exercise: The benefits of having a pet
First grade children
Main argument: Kids love pets and caring for a pet at a young age gives them an early sense of responsibility. (Emphasize the latter)
*point out that pets give joy to the person taking care of them AND other people around them*
Parents
Main argument: Pets bring joy to the family, and they keep you company when your kids are at school and you are not at work
second point: Seeing your kids happy will put a smile on your face, and according to recent studies, smiling frequently gives a positive effect to the individual and to the people around him/her.
People who prefer cleanliness
Main argument: Cats and dogs are not the only animals that can be considered pets, even turtles, rabbits, birds, fishes and other animals that produces less waste can also be considered as pets.
Additionally, cats and dogs can be trained to excrete in litters, thus promoting cleanliness.
Conclusion: There are no reasons stopping you from having a pet!

Key to Philippines' Success: Restoring the true Filipino
Tumblr media
The following contexts (Historical, Political, and Cultural) were inspired by President Manuel L. Quezon’s Address on Policies and Achievements of the Government and Regeneration of the Filipino last August 19, 1938:
Historical Context:
Historical Context of the Speech
Manuel Luís Quezon y Molina was the first president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines by the year 1935 to 1944. His speech described the 1938 Philippines' state of affairs and fully depicted the Filipino's strength and weaknesses during that time. It was also implied that the Government that time was in its prime and any trace of corruption was not present.
Political Context of the Speech
“My eager purpose has been to give vitality and power to democratic processes and to adapt them to the ever exacting demands of the complex social and political problems of our day.” … “I have scrupulously maintained religious freedom and the separation of Church and State. I have safeguarded free thought, free expression, and the unabridgeable right of the people to work, and to possess and enjoy the fruits of their toil.” … “I have not tolerated corruption, inefficiency, or injustice in public office; and I pledge myself to persevere in my efforts to sweep every nook and cranny of the Government clean of every deleterious influence that might impair the vitality of the body politic. I have kept the public finance in a sound condition and have succeeded materially in introducing approved business practices in the management of the people’s money.”
These statements taken from Manuel Quezon’s speech show that the Phillipine Government along with its officials is responsible and works with fidelity. It can be further inferred that during Manuel Quezon’s time, the Government was top-notch and performs independently of the church and was not influenced easily by conspirators and corrupt officials. The Government was described as “clean” meaning no impurities that can destory the Filipino community were present during his time.
Cultural Context of the Speech
BEING HOSPITABLE. Filipinos are known for their hospitality. They treat their guests warmly at their best. For example, a Filipino mother serves her guests with expensive plates that are just hidden in her cabinet rather than plates used by her family everyday. This is why most foreigners give good impressions to the Philippines because of the very welcoming people. According to a Forbes magazine, Philippines is ranked 8th of the friendliest country in the world.

BEING RESPECTFUL. In the Philippines, they use “po” and “opo” to indicate respect to the elders. “Opo” means yes. For siblings, they use “ate” for sister and “kuya” for brother. Calling an elder by his/her first name is an act of impoliteness and rudeness. “Mano po” is also done by the young to their parents or grand parents. Being respectful is part of Filipino culture.

BAYANIHAN. In times of tragedies such as typhoons and earthquakes, bayanihan can be seen among Filipinos. Bayanihan refers to the spirit of a communal unity, work, and cooperation to achieve a particular goal.
Tumblr media

Negative Aspects of Filipinos:
MAÑANA HABIT. Mañana habit refers to the procrastination of such activities. Filipinos often delay tasks on a certain date though it can be done earlier.
BAHALA NA. “Bahala na” is a phrase Filipinos often used when they are not certain about something. It means “come what may” or “living it all up to God.”
UTANG NA LOOB. It is a Filipino cultural trait which means “a debt of one’s inner self (loob)” or debt of gratitude.

Writing Activity (Compare and Contrast)
Tokyo Ghoul: Anime vs Manga
Tokyo Ghoul is about a normal college student named Ken Kaneki who is attacked by a ghoul named Rize. After getting fatally injured by Rize’s attack, she is hit by a falling steel beam and was killed. Ken then ends up receiving an organ transplant from Rize’s ghoul body and becomes a half-ghoul himself. Tokyo Ghoul was originally written as a manga and was adapted into an anime series in 2014 and 2015. While the title gained even more fans with the anime adaptation, many people who read the manga first may be surprised or even disturbed with the differences between the anime and manga.
To start off, most of the parts that got cut out of the anime are the extremely violent and gory scenes from the manga, such as Kaneki investigating the ghouls’ restaurant on Itori’s order and the torturing scenes. Addtionally, some events happened in a different order, such as Mado and Amon meeting Tsukiyama before stepping into the 20th district, but these happened to focus on the character development and not to change much of the story.
In the manga, Kaneki creates an anti-Aogiri organization with Banjo, Hinami, and Tsukiyama after his transformation through Yamori’s torture. While in the anime, he joins Aogiri Tree and fights the CCG. However, both produced the same outcome, both organizations separated him from Anteiku in a way. The manga focused on how Kaneki searched the identity of the One-Eyed King outside of Aogiri while the anime focused on the inside perspective of Aogiri Tree. Last difference is his bestfriend, Hide. In the manga, he meets Kaneki in the underground during the Owl cleanup operation before Kaneki fights Arima and disappears afterwards, which implies his vital role for the following sequel Tokyo Ghoul:re. However, in the anime, Hide saves Kaneki from Amon during their battle and receives a mortal wound. His body was returned to CCG by Kaneki himself to start a battle against Arima.
That being said, the anime and manga is really different but both came to one conclusion, Kaneki dies. This prepares the story for Tokyo Ghoul:RE where the story revolves around Haise Sasaki, a half-ghoul just like Kaneki. Their difference made the adaptation only better as it gave manga readers another direction and perspective of the story for them to enjoy while making other viewers who haven't read the manga curious on Tokyo Ghoul's original story.

Books and Movies: Why Reading is Preferred
Popular books nowadays often get movie adaptations and be shown into the bigscreens. However, many people prefers hitting the books rather than watching its movie. Why? The main reason is because books offer more information about the story whereas the movie adaptations just summarizes the story and feels like relaying only the "tip of the iceberg" of the story. Another reason that can be considered why reading is preferred is because books can offer the reader an extensive background of the story and make him/her feel the emotion of the characters more effectively than the movies because books require greater imagination to picture what is happening thus immersing the reader into the world of the book. All-in-all, it can be concluded that a lot of people prefer reading than movies but it still cannot be generalized that books are greater than movies.

Writing Activity (Clipped and Paced Narration)
Clipped Narration
As I woke up one morning, the first thought that came to my mind are my cats. I searched for them but couldn't find one of them so I started to worry. Lunch came yet Nyx, my cat is still missing. After a few hours, I smelled something bad and saw my cat, dead. Sadness took over me as I realized that Nyx is gone forever. Until now, I am still gloomy about my cat's passing but I am at peace now because I know Nyx will live forever in my memories.
Paced Narration
As my eyes opened one morning, one thought came to my mind. I wanted to cuddle my cats. I excitedly exited my room and proceeded downstairs, expecting to see my cats somewhere there, playing amongst themselves. To my astonishment, Nyx, one of my cats is not there. I started to search for my cat until lunch came and I am forced to stop searching for my cat to eat. A glimmer of hope came to me as I remembered that Nyx is a glutton and will never pass up on a meal. I was sure that Nyx will come to eat. But no, my cat did not show up. I waited for hours but Nyx never came. As evening is becoming closer, I smelled a certain horrible smell. As I followed the scent, my eyes could not believe what I saw. I saw my cat, lifeless. I felt devastated. I realized that I will never gonna have the opportunity to play with Nyx again. Time passed and I am still sad about what happened. However, I know that Nyx will continue on and live in my memories as the gentle and cheerful cat that I once have.
