When the woman had asked him for a recommendation, Remy hadn’t put any more thought into it than looking up at the menu board and repeating the first thing he saw written, “Well, that’s what you get for trusting a stranger,” He replied with a bit of snark, not antagonistic towards her but finding the situation humorous, “I didn’t know it’d be somethin’ fruity, honest,” As honest as Remy usually got, which wasn’t much to write home about, “Would you rather I recommend a finger of scotch?”
he has a point, she usually doesn’t trust anyone but herself so why would this be any different. but someone told her she needs to open up more and be more approachable, whatever that meant, so she was doing just that. perhaps next time she won’t insult someone’s recommendation so much. after all, she did ask them. “definitely not fruity. more like chemicals,” she paused, trying to find the words trying to describe it the best she can, “chemicals, with a splash of what someone things a strawberry would taste and an overload of sugar. i would prefer a shot of baijiu but scotch would have been so much better than whatever that was.”

Niko lifted the cup to his lips, the smallest twitch of his brow ticking off the remark in silence. I told you. The coffee, untouched by sugars and syrup, wouldn’t do much to wash away the next bitter remark, though. It was consumed with the intention of putting its benefits to use, straying from any means of diluting it or making it an indulgence.
“You shouldn’t have taken their recommendation. It had every add on they could think of. They purged you and you took it belly up,” He pointed out. “I don’t see the point in trying to hide the taste of coffee. Either you like it, or you don’t. Drink tea instead if you have to bury it so much.”
she scowled at him. xialing knew that he was right. when they told her their recommendation she was a little sceptical, but she had promised katy that she would try new things, even if they sounded disgusting, because, in her words, they usually tasted better than they sounded. “look, i just didn’t realise it would be that sweet. i definitely think i’m done with trying new things, or at least things that have that many shots to caramel syrup.” her head’s starting to hurt from the intense sugar rush and she desperately needs another drink to wash out that horrible artificial taste that was lingering on her tongue. “what would you have recommended instead?”

Querl wasn’t all that confident about this new gig they’d taken - it seemed almost shady, a little underground. Not the usual billionaire’s work they were commissioned for. But ultimately, Querl figured their work was more about helping others and doing so in a way that did not disrupt space and time. Coming into Ten Rings, the alien held their head high and tried to find their contact - Xu Xialing, supposedly the new leader and, despite being fresh-faced, very determined to do her job well, “Hello, I’m told you need some work done?”
@jinbishou·
xialing had never been one to settle at being mediocre at something and she had her father to blame for that. for years she had been sitting on the sidelines, watching the boys train while she had to learn more traditional arts, like playing the guzheng and calligraphy, and she played the part of the obedient little daughter while observing every single move and practising them over and over again until her muscles ached when everyone was asleep. one day she was going to prove to everyone that whatever the boys could do, she could do better and it was their loss for not using her. and that’s what she planned to do with the ten rings. she knew there were some who questioned her leadership and their loyalties still remained with father, but she had to show them that it was a business with old-fashioned values and she was going to make it into something better. and that meant branching into the tech industry, but she was going to need the best of the best, and someone she could trust. “yeah, come in. i heard you’re one of the best, and that’s what i need. i’m not here to play, i’m here to build an empire. but let’s get one thing straight, you’re going to have to show that i can trust you, after all i can’t have someone selling out my plans to my enemies. if you’re not okay with it then the door’s that way.”

she used to think she never had a maternal bone in her body. for most of xialing’s life she never looked out for anyone but herself, and in all honesty, she had almost forgotten what it was like to be cared for, and to care for someone. but here she was, outside of an apartment building with boxes of home-cooked dishes that reminded her of home. perhaps she had overdone it a bit, but she wasn’t sure what the girl liked and wanted to cover her bases, and now she was a bit conscious that it wasn’t going taste as good as it was supposed to. but she was here now, and xialing didn’t make this trip for nothing. “i made too much food and didn’t know what to do with it so here.” she practically thrusts the bag of food into jubilee’s arms as soon as she opens the door.

blackberry: is your life an action film, a comedy, a romantic comedy, or drama?
action with maybe a sprinkle of family drama.
plum: favorite clothing brands?
i can see xialing wearing a lot of allsaints, helmut lang, the kooples and for more budget friendly options, probably uniqlo, mango, topshop. she prefers a more grungy, darker look and lots of pant suits.
tangelo: if you could be any mythical creature, which would you be?
either a phoenix or a dragon. she used to wish she could turn into a bird to fly away whenever things got bad at home and she thinks they’re both pretty cool creatures.

dragonfruit: do you drink alcohol?
yes, xialing does drink and she can hold her alcohol pretty well too as she’s used to having chinese rice liquor, or baijiu, which can be as strong as 67% ABV.
apricot: what do you do when you’re sad?
she mostly bottles it up. talking about feelings wasn’t really something that was encouraged in their household after their mother passed away. if something is really bothering her she might go down to the training facilities and take it out on a punching bag.
mango: what is your trademark?
leather, lots of leather. and her green pendant from her late mother that she never takes off.

"do people really drink this stuff?" her nose crinkled with disgust as she took another sip of the drink before deciding that it definitely wasn’t for her and throwing it in a bin. that was her fault for taking recommendations from strangers. so much for trying new things in the new year; xialing was definitely going to stick to what she knew she liked for the time being. “you might as well be drinking liquid sugar. i think even that would probably taste better than that.”

( @jinbishou ! ) ❝ has anyone told you you’re so cool ? ❞ for her effort , daisy , whenever is a grown woman ; but she’s also never really had idols besides melinda may , tony stark , and even a little bit of captain america ( she’s only human ! ) . ❝ if shield and sword wasn’t a mess of noobs from a different world trying to find a place to stay , i’d be trying to recruit you so hard right now . ❞ but daisy’s exhausted . and she desperately needs a break ; so taking a step back was taking a break in her eyes .
it almost feels like deja vu. she’s reminded of that first meeting with katy at the golden daggers club and how amused she was. “ once or twice. though you’re not exactly uncool yourself. you’ve gotten to train with some of the best and i have a feeling you’d probably beat my ass as much as i hate to admit it.” xialing’s competitive but she knows talent when she sees it, and she's got to give credit where it’s due. “i’m flattered but i’m not sure i’m much of a team player.” years of working alone and watching from the sidelines have made xialing independent; she works best alone (or maybe she just tells herself that because she’s scared of letting people in for them to leave again).

it was a whole load of stress, as far as greta could gather. a big portal, much like the one that brought her here, had appeared again. no one to know why it happened or what that meant for her and the people from other dimensions. whether they could go home or not. but she’d been slowly coming out of her shell, thankfully. having jubilee for a roommate can do that to you, she thinks. so she offers the other a cookie, one she’s baked, and gives a warm smile. “cookie for your thoughts?” [ @reshieldedstart ]
xialing eyes the cookie in front of her with skepticism and then back at the girl. she looks harmless enough, but then again, to most people she probably didn’t look like someone who founded and ran a fighting club. “i’m good, thanks. cookies aren’t really my thing.” it sounds like a complete lie, but she’s telling the truth. “you’d probably enjoy it better than i would.”

@reshieldedstart // WHERE WERE THE REST of the justice league when you need them ? seriously . she’s out here on a limb trying to figure things out ! “ okay yeah i definitely agree that it was one HELL of a new year’s party –– ” pauses to take a sip of her tea . maybe something stronger is what she needs . “ i know there was that whole blip thing but are dead people reappearing supposed to be a normal thing ? ” she’s certain that whatever caused this has to be linked to magic . and with magic , there’s always a give and take .
the moment that dead people starting reappearing there was this feeling in her chest -- a kind of hopefulness, yearning feeling that she hadn’t felt in a while. then the next thing she knew, her eyes were searching for a familiar face, though there was a part of her that wondered if she would have even recognised her own mother after all these years. but then reality hit and she knew that even if she did reappear, something had to be wrong and no matter how much she wanted to see her again, she couldn’t trust it. “i’m not even sure what normal is anymore.” a few months ago she would have laughed if someone told her she was going to fight a massive soul-sucking dragon with her maternal relatives, who lived in a mystical village that you could only reach through a moving maze that could literally kill you, but now, that was her normal. “but i’m going to take a wild guess and say no. whatever it is, it can’t be good right?”

Edward stood by the far end of the bar, his fingers awkwardly flexing around the cup in his hands. He wasn’t a social butterfly by any means, but the combination of an entirely new location, and entirely new people, meant his slight eccentricities felt like they were ramped up to eleven. His nose and forehead were twitching with the effort of not drawing attention to himself, while also feeling like everyone was watching him There was a fine layer of condensation on the outside of his glass, so Edward had to keep awkwardly switching hands to avoid having the glass slip out of his hands. Perhaps gloves weren’t the best choice for a party.
There were a few similarly minded people around him, somewhat huddled in the quieter area of the bar. The countdown for the New Year, even though they had a few hours to go, seemed to infect the room with a anticipatory excitement. Which Edward did not share as much, as he put his drink down on the crowded bartop. “The only reason we celebrate the “New Year” on this date is because Julius Caesar moved it. Egocentric bastard. New Years used to be in March.” Edward muttered to no one in particular. “The 1st, to be exact. After the fall of the Roman Empire, some people celebrated in late March. It means nothing. The dates means nothing.” Edward turned the glass on the table, watching the liquid slosh around.
“Here’s a riddle. A palm fruit, a meet cute, a square on a Calender. What am I?”
@reshieldedstart
moving from macau to america was such a big shift for xialing and sometimes she wonders if she had made the right choice. everyone, for one, seemed so much more chatty than she was used to and xu xialing was a woman of few words. at least in macau she had a reputation and if people didn’t know who she was, they definitely have heard of the ten rings and people were less likely to strike up a casual conversation compared to new york. her eyes glanced to the person next to her and then back to her glass. maybe if she ignored them then they’d get tired and stop talking, or maybe someone else would respond instead but then she scoffed in response, “of course it was a man. only men have the audacity to do something like that.”
xialing took another sip of her drink. she definitely wasn’t sober, or drunk enough (xialing couldn’t decide which one it was), to be having conversations like this. learning riddles wasn’t exactly on her english curriculum when she was learning it. it’s not exactly something that she was going to use in the near future, or ever. who could have anticipated the meeting of a rather peculiar stranger at a party who was telling riddles to a bunch of drunk people? “i don’t know. please put us out of our misery and tell us the answer.”

@jinbishou
BEING AS SOCIABLE AS SHE WAS it was no surprise how quick makkari was to make friends. particularly in the form of a CERTAIN xu xialing. despite the fact that the other was C O L D && stand off-ish makkari didn’t let that bother them. in fact it ONLY served as motivation for her to befriend the other, so there they sat across from xialing a rather BORED expression on her face ❮ so what exactly do you do for fun?? ❯ they shrug a TEASING grin on her face ❮ i forgot, is the word fun even in your vocabulary ?? ❯
showing kindness was deemed a weakness in her father’s eyes; it was hammered into her from a young age and xu wenwu’s children were to be anything but weak. for a long time, all she knew were those walls within the ten rings training compound and most days, the only social interaction she had with someone her own age was her dearest gēgē so she didn’t exactly have an abundance of friends growing up, nor did she have the experience to form friendships outside of the fighting right. she looked up from her glass with a pointed look, “definitely not this.” her eyes scanned the room as she clicked her tongue, “parties that i’m used to tend to be a lot louder with far more fighting than talking. it’s a good stress relief.”

sam wilson && open ( @reshieldedstart ) !
sam wasn’t one to frequent many holiday parties . or any parties , for that matter . they just weren’t his thing . he didn’t enjoy the people , or the outfits , or the lack of real alcohol , none of it . and maybe that made him a party pooper , he didn’t care . he’d rather be home or at sarah’s or even on a random mission in a random party .
( but sam had quickly learned that captain america made appearances that the falcon didnt have to . )
he‘s standing to the side of the room , in view enough that he can be seen , but far enough away from the ACTION that he’d be able to hide & run away , if he really wanted to .
but then he hears someone say something , and he immediately regrets his decision to stay ( or even come in the first place )
he takes a sip of liquid courage before replying “ sorry , what was that ? “
holiday parties weren't a common occurrence in the xu household. xialing doesn’t really remember much from her childhood (probably because she’s blocked most of it out because remembering it means remembering all the bad parts as well as the good -- but in all honesty, were there many good parts?). she doesn’t really mingle with the other attendees like everyone else and spends most of her night in the sidelines or at the bar. she turns to the source of the voice with a puzzled look, “me? i didn’t say anything. must have been them,” she points to the person on the other side. “why aren’t you out there with everyone else? are you not enjoying the party?”

@reshieldedstart // NYE BASH
This was the kind of event that only occurred in comic books: every hero, villain, and henchman in the city in one space, improbably fitting in the same room, gorging themselves on canapés and expensive wine. There was still room for a crowd of extras and background characters, equally well-dressed, a little less well-rendered. They looked sketchier at the edges, but the sight of Dr. Strange in a tuxedo? The Young Avengers in fancy suits? Beyond worth it. Gwen was happily double-fisting champagne and crab cakes, trying to get an eye on the good gossip. Who was dating whom? What was being stolen–who was having a fistfight out on the terrace?
Good shit, all of it.
Just as long as no one knew about the knives strapped to their thighs under their dress (gotta be prepared for any situation, especially at a party!), this was going to be a great night–but, oh no, she was out of champagne. Gwen elbowed the person nearest them and batted her eyelashes. “Hey, buddy. What’s a plucky little ingenue gotta do to get some more bubbly around here?”
parties like these were definitely not xialing’s usual scene and without the badgering of her brother and katy, she wouldn’t have attended (and to be fair, they did have valid points). spending new years eve alone, even if it was in a decent apartment in manhattan, was pretty sad and she should really make some sort of effort to make some new friends in the city. she frowned at the person who elbowed her, “you know, there’s this thing called a bar. or if you’re really that desperate you could always just take a glass from one of these lovely people,” she replied in a dry tone as she motioned to the people around them holding barely touched champagne flutes in their hands as they were busy socialising.

A smile crept over Lucifers face as he admired the view. He was more than ready to start his vacation. Technically this wasn’t a vacation. His father asked to him to “Check up on the mortals” and Lucifer took that as an invitation to leave Hell and have a bit a fun. Wanting to get to work he stopped the first person he saw. “So this is New York now? I haven’t been on the east coast in few centuries would you mind catching me up? I’ll buy the first round of drinks.” He flashed the stranger a grin. “Lucifer Morningstar start at your service”
@reshieldedstart
an eyebrow quirked up, "centuries?" perhaps this is some american slang that xialing was not familiar with. though, it was not completely out of field that it could very much be literal; after all, her father had been alive for more than an thousand years and she did fight a giant soul sucking dragon her mother’s hometown that was inhabited a ton of mystical creatures. “i wouldn’t be much help unfortunately so you can save the drink for someone else.” respecting her elders is something that has been engrained in her and she can’t help but feel like it’s wrong to be accepting a drink from someone who is far older than she is. if anything it should be the other way round but that means that she should probably stick around and make small talk (and she despised small talk more than anything). “i’m xialing,” she replied with a curt nod and a small smile.

xdiabolical:
there was a reason why raven stuck to the darkest of corners and areas which brought on some peace and quiet . While most might find anything dark to be unsettling , raven found comfort in it as she looked up at the sky sitting by the window . When someone came into the room and turned on the light , it soon brought discomfort . “ Would you mind ?” There was enough light from the windows to light the room enough .
large parties like these made xialing feel out of place. sure she was used to drinking and making small talk with strangers at the golden daggers club but there was usually less talking involved and more punches being thrown. she just needed to get away for a moment to take a breather from the large crowd. “oh, sorry” she quickly apologised and turned off the light, “i guess we both had the same idea huh?”
