I think it's mentioned on DOOM2016 that the slayer armor was created and gifted to Doomguy by a seraph. So technically Doomguy is a prophet.

Catching up on my DOOM lore after that DOOM Eternal gameplay reveal today. Apparently the DOOM wiki is going with the idea that, much like Primus and Unicron in Transformers at one point, there’s only the one true DOOM Marine across the multiverse. Therefore, the DOOM Marine we play as in DOOM 2016 is the same guy from DOOM and DOOM II: Hell On Earth, who chose to stay in Hell at the end of DOOM 64. At that point he fought for eons and became super powerful (and obtained the Praetor suit), until he got tricked and trapped in the sarcophagus. Then at some point the UAC of an ALTERNATE universe from the original 90s one arrived in Hell (which there’s also only one of in the whole multiverse? And also time functions differently there?) and found the DOOM Marine’s (or as he’s now called, the Doomslayer, they’re even just calling him “the Slayer” in Eternal now, which is badass) sarcophagus.

Demon invasion of Mars happens in this new universe, Doomguy wakes up and continues business as usual, but now we’re playing as a Doomguy who’s been fighting the armies of hell nonstop for potentially centuries, even millennia, and is 1000% done with ANYONE’S excuses to experiment with demon shit. And also, the implication seems to be that the voice that tells you to “rip and tear, until it is done” when you first start a new game is whatever interdimensional wizard created and gave Doomguy the Praetor Suit. And we might actually meet him in Eternal, explaining why Doomguy’s suit has some significant changes in that demo.

They’re really building up all this background lore and I love it.

(also I get the feeling that if Doom 3 isn’t just being completely ignored by all this, it’s another alternate universe, possibly taking place while the Doomslayer we know was hibernating in the sarcophagus, and that game’s player marine is a completely unrelated random soldier. But hey, that’s how our Slayer started out, too.)

Why do you think that all Blades are automatically love interests?

God why is Xenoblade 2s voice acting so bad??? In fact, why is it all not good? I find nothing about this game appealing, the character designs range from generic anime character and tits with a face to cluttered mess and Kingdom Hearts. Meanwhile the gameplay is repetitive and the idea of collecting swords is just and excuse for making a harem which is just fuckin weird.

Have you even played the game? The main point of the plot is that Blades and Drivers protect one another in a mutual fashion. The first boss is a dickhead who only uses his Blade as a wall to hide behind. Come on, man.

Really bothering me that no one is talking about

the rampant sexism in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Yes, a lot of people are critiquing Dahlia’s design or pointing out how the size of Pyra’s boobs are ridiculous, but that is just barely scratching the surface of what a huge step backwards this game is for feminism.

Here we have a game where the characters have openly been designed for the sexual pleasure of straight men. This fact doesn’t even bypass the characters of the game, who make comments on the lack of clothing of some characters. What we have is a normalization of the idea that women and little girls exist to be tools of sexual pleasure. The only main female character that escapes sexualization is ridiculed several times for being manly, which she openly resents.

These characters, even worse, are literally tools. They are weapons used primarily by men. Their purpose in life is to assist their driver. Their power is limited by the will of their master, almost always a man. These are extremely subversive ideas and sends the message that women exist soley to be used. There are male blades, but big surprise, about 80% of them are female. And you don’t see a single hyper-sexualized man in the main cast (or really ever, I have yet to see all of the rarest blades). This is not about video games featuring sexual themes, this is about portraying an entire gender as submissive tools for male pleasure!

Some people are claiming that the designs aren’t sexist because a woman drew them. News flash, women can be sexist. They’re just as able to be affected by patriarchal ideals as anyone.

It’s extremely troubling to me that I’m not seeing anyone getting heated about the sexism in this game as it’s a sign that the gaming community is degrading more over time rather than improving. I’m so tired of talking about this and being jeered at for being an SJW, as if caring about human rights is somehow supposed to be embarrassing.

I’ve seen some complaints about Pyra’s costume from Xenoblade 2 being far too inappropriate and, to be honest, I have to agree. It’s highly problematic.
