this final season of perry mason isn't the series' best by a long shot, but it's still got some gems. the case of the sausalito sunrise is paranoid in a way that the show hardly ever dips into, with a baffling opening murder, a possible art forgery, an actively hostile police department, and even a high speed chase with paul drake driving a big rig and holding a journalist at gun point. there's some good digs at the art world — honestly a running delight in the show, which did a great if hammy job skewering poets and artists and actors in a way that felt affectionate and observed, if fairly cynical — and a great speech from perry where he tells steve the cop to chill the fuck out and do his job rather than taking a cop murder personally

the best perry mason episodes are the ones that create just the biggest, most unlikeable rich asshole, show you how everyone in their life despises them and wants them dead, and makes them the smuggest, shittiest dudes… and then kills them. that's catharsis, baby

Part 3 (Part 1, Part 2)
Perry just “doo doo doo” getting water as slowly as possible then meandering back to the office took me out 😂😂 and then drinking the water like “welp that happened who could’ve guessed…” he’s so funny
I also love that even though obviously Perry’s conscious wouldn’t let him expose those families who illegally adopted children he still refuses to endorse murder. The line “I do understand, I just don’t agree” is such a good show of Perry’s character and his ethics. It’s literally like “cool motive still murder”! He won’t let an innocent woman be convicted AND he won’t let these families be hurt in the process of solving this case. He’s just so 🩷🩷❤️❤️

Della undercover <3
I love that you can tell she's clearly nervous but she's also really good at this? She tries to find a good place to put the envelope then does a really good job hiding when the person comes in with the gun (sidebar where did they even come from???? I guess the implication is a window in the bedroom or something but wouldn't Paul have seen that from outside?? whatever #perrylyuniverse)
Barbara's face acting is unparalleled honestly!

*taps mic* Hello? HELLO?! Is this thing still on?
It's been...a minute. It's been a crazy year, particularly this summer. I've still been around, still been lurking, and, if you can believe it, still been writing.
For ages, ever since I finished reading all of the Perry Mason novels almost two years ago, I've been thinking about all the times book!Perry proposed to Della and she turned him down. Well. I finally did something about it and have written a fic that's Della's POV after each of these proposals. And now the first chapter is live!
There will be seven chapters total, all of them already written and ready to go. I plan to post one chapter a day for the next week, I hope you all enjoy!

obviously no one lives up to ray collins as lt. tragg, but which of his successors do you prefer? andy or steve?
Oooo, such a tough question! I think I'm going to have to say Steve Drumm. There's just something about Andy Anderson that's always a little too antagonistic, a little too mule headed cop. Steve seems slightly more reasonable and open to Perry's questions than Andy does.
(though Wesley Lau does look A LOT like my grandfather so that's always nice to see)

Part 1 (Part 2, Part 3)
I love watching the way Perry operates.
For context, this doctor was running an operation where he was adopting out orphans and unwanted babies to families that wanted babies but couldn't have them for whatever reason. This was all under the table and illegal though it's made pretty clear that the doctor and his nurse were doing it out of the kindness of their hearts and with the best interest of the children in mind.
At this point, Perry has what he thinks is the book where this doctor kept records of all the families that he's helped. He came here knowing that the police know he has it (Della got subpoenaed for it) and that the murderer knows he has it (and has killed for that information in the past), but instead of just handing it over and wiping his hands of the whole situation, Perry wants to do what's right. At this point, he doesn't know this doctor at all - his client is this guy's nurse and all the information Perry has is from her.
You can see in the first few gifs how he's trying to feel out the doctor. He's literally holding the records book in his hands but in true Perry fashion he doesn't give anything away. He's probing to see if the doctor is a good man or if there was some ulterior motive in his adoption scheme. I think he's trying to see if it’s possible this guy committed murder and is trying to pin it on his client too. It's only once Perry has been convinced of the doctor's innocence and good intentions that he brings up the envelope and the book.
Then of course “subsequent research has convinced” him that his actions were “illegal” aadsfjklajsfklsdf PERRY!!! I love all his "cover his ass" bullshit legal speak he's so annoying!!!!

Part 2 (Part 1, Part 3)
And now we see that Perry - being a good person and also insane - had no intention of actually turning over the book to the police. Instead, he hands it over to the Doctor then very suggestively takes his matchbook and throws it into the fire before asking "is there a water cooler down the hall?" and conspicuously making himself scarce while leaving the envelope with the book behind. Once again, Perry's patented "arson" technique saves the day 😂😂
Also Perry in this scene 🥵🥵 the zoom in on him lighting the cigarette and then smoldering up at the Doctor C H R I S T. And when he pauses in the doorway and glances back over his shoulder like goddamn Raymond we get it you're gorgeous!!!!!
This scene also reinforces my burgeoning headcanon that Perry is absolutely awful at undercover or covert work. He is great at lying and fraud but subtlety is not my man's strong suit 😂 every time him and Paul go "undercover" he makes it like 2 seconds before he gets bored and gives up. And here he's being about as subtle as an elephant in a teashop! It's really endearing.
+ if you're like me and like looking at Perry's face here's a stand-alone gif of his smoulder:
