Gaining Perspective Through Graphite &Color Pencil
39 posts
Following retirement in 2015, I was drawn to start drawing again after 35 years. Unbelievably, I am taking classes again from my previous instructor, Larry Wollam in Tucson Arizona.I am starting to see the world through my graphite pencils, and will occasionally post my drawings in various stages to show my progress.

This scratchboard/sgraffito drawing of Birdie was my first attempt in this media. I call this drawing "Snooze" as Birdie fell asleep sitting on Terre's lap with her head on the kitchen table. Scratchboard is a unique but unforgiving media, since the image is created by scratching off the black film with exacto knife leaving a white image on the paper. Completed February 2025.

This drawing of Linh and her young son is from a September 2022 photo taken in a small mountain village near Sapa, Vietnam. Linh accompanied us on a walking tour through her village. The vibrant colors of her native tribe made a great color pencil subject. This was my first attempt at trying to replicate flesh tones. Project completed: May 2023

This screech owl and his mate were seen frequently on our front porch during the recent mating season. This color pencil drawing was placed on black paper to practically a life size scale. The paper was not high quality: and therefore, difficult for a colored drawing. Completed January 4, 2023.

This leopard was captured by my daughter, Jessica, while on a photo safari in Kenya. It is rare to see this cat on safari. I couldn’t pass on the opportunity of making the leopard the subject of my second color pencil drawing. I enjoyed the “whiskers” challenge. Completed April 13, 2022.

This is my first color pencil drawing. The grey-headed kingfisher is native to parts of Africa. The image is from a photo taken by my son, Peter, in Kenya. For me moving from graphite pencil to color pencil is a steep learning curve, but fun! November 15, 2021

This project has family significance in that my wife’s father Marvin and her grandfather Joe are posed as sparring partners in a St Louis gym during the 1950’s. So many fun elements in this project such as boxing gloves, boxing trunks, speed bag in addition to the father /son combo. Marvin was gifted the original drawing. Completed July 31, 2021.

This photo of a mule deer was taken in our front yard in Tucson. It was my first drawing attempt on black paper with white pencils. I enjoyed the process but found it to be much more limiting than graphite on white paper. Completed May 28, 2021

This portrait is of my parents Eva and Lynn Ziegler. This is taken from a 1947 Wedding Portrait. It was amazing to see the air brush touches on the original portrait. Both parents passed in 1992, so the project became very special. Graphite drawing completed March 12, 2021.
